Nah, he really was exceptional, but you're going to make a lot of crap when you make as much music as he did.Almost every artist/band write tons of songs all the time and discard the shitty stuff. I think Prince just released everything he made.

A few good songs, Cream, Raspberry Beret. Entertaining persona, like a Batman villain. Talented guitarist. He wanted to be known as that but the pop took over. Most songs dull and bombastic. I don't know how people like a song like 1999 unless you're on coke at a disco in the 90's.
His drum machine programming sucked, just basic beats.

Yeah overall just a very boring catalog.The only area where he shined was high pitched singing, but the instrumental side of things is very lackluster.Some people do enjoy this kind of hippy dippy athmospheric nonsense tho, where nothing pops out or has a nice melody or anything.It all just blends together and doesn't arouse any feelings.One of the very few widely respected musical acts I have zero songs put on my playlists.
