Was this really that good? How the fuck did it sell 5 million fucking copies
>>130383892Yeah, its definitely worth at least one listen all the way through once a year.
>>1303838921979 and Tonight, Tonight were big hits. Huge demand for "grunge" and alt-rock at the time and this was their first output since Kurt Cobain died. It's a solid album, I am on the side of liking the earlier shit more but I'm not a Mellon Collie hater. Lot of great tracks and it definitely has some rangehttps://youtu.be/EO0OURc9WDU^ always been my favorite track, wish they made more where this came from
>>130383892>used to the Billy was just an arrogant douchebag>now everything he talks about makes sense Don’t know if it was age or what…
>>130383892It fucking sucks ass. Siamese dream is a classic, but it was basically a stroke of genius, from a not so genius source. This album is not such a stroke, not at all, not whatsoever. And it goes on and on, and on, for fucking 2 hours. It got overhyped at the time because everyone involved was misguided. It's bad. It rode the waves of a lot of misguided narratives at the time, including the band's own overrated statues and the overindulgent, dying rock-crit industry. It's a fucking nightmare, bloated absolute shitshow of an album
>>130383892its good, GOAT'd album art too
>>130383892its absolute kino. the fact that they recorded tonight tonight with the chicago philharmonic orchestra live in one take should speak of its caliber https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZNAHcMMOHE8
>>130383967I met Billy when I lived in Chicago about 6 months before Gish had come out, and maybe I was lucky, but he was always cool the few times I ran into him at shows. First time was at a used record store he worked at on Broadway in Chicago, just a few doors down from Reckless Records (don’t know if it’s still there or not). Anyway, at the time, I was really into Jesus & Mary Chain, and so I asked Billy, who was working there at the time, if they had any J&MC rarities or bootlegs, and he chuckled and said something to the effect of “they should’ve stopped after ‘Psychocandy.’”I immediately took it as just another local musician being bitter about bigger bands, and I started to walk out, and he asked why I was leaving, and I told him he was rude, and he said that he was just voicing his opinion, then directed me to the J&MC section. As I was looking thru what they had, he asked me if I liked Bauhaus, I told him I did but had only heard a few things, so he recommended the album that had “Crowds” on it, and I didn’t leave with any J&MC, but I did leave with a Bauhaus album and also a UFO album, on his recommendation. Before I left, he told me that his band were nearly done with their first album and were playing at Cabaret Metro.
>>130384019How exactly did this mis-narrative play out?
>>130384128This was when Industrial & WaxTrax! Records were big, and you couldn’t go to any bar or show or retail store on Chicago’s North Side without hearing Thrill Kill Kult or Die Warzau, so I was really into that stuff as well, but I did go and see SP, and they rocked. After the show, I had a chance to talk to him, and he said, “Hey Jesus & Mary Chain! You listen to your records yet?” We talked about that a little, then the show, then D’arcy, and he muttered something about how she wasn’t very reliable and how she missed rehearsals. I left and didn’t see him again until a few months later, when he told me how he was producing a record by Catherine, a local band whose drummer was dating D’arcy at the time. I already knew their singer, and I was living with the bass player’s girlfriend Heather Bricks at the time, so I was peripherally aware of them but didn’t know that he was producing them, so we chatted about that for a minute, and that was that.I moved back home to California shortly after, and I was watching 120 Minutes one night, and they were playing the video for “Siva”, and I started hollering for everyone in the house to come and see this band from Chicago that I had met a few times, and since my family were / are hardcore old school country & western fans, they weren’t at all impressed.
>>130384128this story doesn't make you sound cool
it reads like ai slop
>>130383892People bought albums based on the singles, and this had 4 monster ones.
>>130383892I thought Bullet with Butterfly Wings was cool, but I was 10
>>130383892It's a good album, two discs is too many but it's a classic regardless
TIME
>>130383892Ava adore is better
>>130383967Billy will say what's on his mind and not care about the consequences. That's it.I respect him for it.

>>13038389Sometimes i dedicate my evening to listen to this masterpiece. The sheer lenght of this project makes it more of an experience then album
>>130383892shoulda been an epbullet is good
>>130384128this is cool. likely the metro show they gunned the drummer into. nice.
>>130384147Is it crazy that when this dropped they were basically the biggest band on earth?
>>130384187miss those days
>>130383892>How the fuck did it sell 5 million fucking copiesit didnt. double albums count as two sold. so this only sold 2.5 million
>>130386092it was as priced much higher than a regular though. that shit wasnt ten bucks at all
>>130383892I kind of ageee but By Starlight is an underrated gem and one of their best songs
>>130383892It's the best Album of the 90s. The more you know about the history of modern music, the more you recognize the 30-40 different genres and influences on this album. The little nods to the audience and stories, the requiem for Kurt Cobain in the first title and the recall of themes in the last song "farewell and goodnight", the story about Courtney Love in "Where Boys fear to treat", the brillance of the lyrics and composition in "Thru the Eyes of Ruby" that picks up themes from Stairway to Heaven & Hotel California. People like to dismiss & hate SP or Billy, but it's usually the clueless crowd of causual music listeners or the beginner level fans of bands like Nirvana, Sonic Youth or Pearl Jam. The Pumpkins first 3 albums are like Revolver, Sgt Pepper & White Album and it's scary how good they were during that time, almost intimidating.
i'm sure tons of people would've bought it for 1979 and Bullet alone
>>130384187>>130385901And if it was blasting out of your car, the only way that was possible was if you bought the music(or it was on the radio I guess). You were cool.
>>130387249Is it required to be so zesty to make great music?
>>130388759>le zestyWhat gen alpha trash lingo is this now
>>130386092That’s the stupidest loophole I’ve ever heard of. Why the fuck would that be allowed?
>>130390101It's been a word for a long time, old man.
>>130390101Zesty has been a thing for years now lurk moar
>>130387249this
>>130383892>Was this really that good?Yes, it was/is.
Why does Billy Corgan sound like Mitch from Powerpuff Girls?
>>130383892Dude’s voice sucks ass. Biggest “emperor’s new clothes” of the 90’s
>>130383892Is this sold new in the bigger case anymore? All I’ve seen online are the slim cases. I want the chonker case without the gay parental advisory logo.
>>130391146he sounds perfect on 1979, nobody could've sang it better
The hits really are that good. Unfortunately most of the album is filler
>>130390267>30 year olds larping as teenagerscringe
>>130390148see the Why it’s done part
>>130384128You sound like a bitch for almost walking out
>>130386092No, fucking moron, it sold 5 million but it was counted as 10 million. Do your research before you post.
>>130383892once you delete everything but 1979 its not that bad
>>130383892it was kinda the culmination of an era and genre
>>130383892I was there. It was indeed a big deal. The MTV Awards, everything. Every kid my age owned a copy (except me because, well its a long story, unless you want me to get into it)
>>130392410>unless you want me to get into iti want you to get into it
>>130384128>>130384147genuinely cool stories, thanks for sharing
>>130383892Some album sales can be indicative of a previous albums hype and people wanting to be part of something they missed out on. Also, Kurt died and Billy explicitly had a one sided competition with the dude so there was a void in the market he filled. Also two pretty big singles.
>>130392142>not that badits one of the best songs of all time
>>130391298Check eBay. The originals pre-owned are the around the same price as the reissue.
>>130383892I was still a little kid and remember them on MTV but I didn’t have money to get it. So I didn’t experience it in 95 fml
How do I get a D’arcy gf?
>>130383892i give mcis the edge over siamese dream because i like variety
>>130393410lol re-read my post
>>130384431>AngieHoly based
>>130383892Siamese Dream was exponentially better than this. But this was a decade where Alanis Morissette sold a billion albums. The 90s were a bit shit tbf.
AND INTO THE EYES OF THE JACKAL I SAY KA-BOOM
I remember when Bi-Corg dropped this. I lived in the projects. All the black guys were like 'damn bro this white boy aiight"
CAN MAKE IT LASTFOREEEEVER
You zoomers aren't even going to know what I'm talking about, but it was one of the choices on the 12 cds for $1 on the Columbia House inserts in magazines. I'm sure that helped a lot.
think it needed some shedding but honestly the aeroplane flies high is a must listen if you like melon collie. a lot of great stuff there. insane how the TAFH and melon collie are like 4 hours of material combined.
Is it just my imagination or is SP going through a bit of a renaissance right now?
>>130398731their newest albums barely sell and get charted but i think they're still going strong playing live. corgan also just recently invited butch vig for no reason maybe they're planning for a new album again.
>>130383892It's boring, dogshit. Billy Corgan fucking sucks.
listen to this now
https://spcodex.wiki/ATUM_(synopsis)
>>130383892It was probably the first post-grunge albumIt still had that glow as if it came from a real music scene where songwriting was king. But it also felt like the dawn of an era, it had a crepuscular feel to it. Too melancholy. It might have also spawned the mainstreamisation of pop-punk with that 1979 hybrid tune. It opened the way for someone like Avril to come out with poppy 'punk' larping tunes
