found this youtube channel where a guy has uploaded a bunch of reel to reel rips. even over youtube, these sound INCREDIBLE. for example:Hotel California - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mfuySJqizgcThriller - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uxMwUGZ2eKI&t=795sOwner of a Lonely Heart - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4X0nvguVKq0Led Zeppelin Whole Lotta Love - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oSY45PEnnP8he claims some of them are masters, but they've got to be at least a gen or two out right? in any case, they sound great and now I'm r2r curious
>>130397662Reel to reel was great, professional standard machines offered the best sound quality available at the time. It doesn’t refer to an exact format though. Domestic/consumer reel to reel machines (like the one in your pic) used 1/2 inch tape, studios and other professional applications used 1 or 2 inch tape for multi track recording, and the inch-per-second tape speed varied widely too with higher speeds, up to a certain limit, offering better quality. But yeah, stereo masters would be put on 1/2 inch tape so he could have genuine master recordings.
>>130397662>they've got to be at least a gen or two out right?Could be duplicates of the master made for backups, the machine in the videos definitely looks more pro studio than consumer. I'd imagine the actual master tapes are locked in some vault somewhere, maybe this guy has access to them. The Yes one sounds incredible.
