47 minutes of buildup with no payoff.
that's post-rock in a nutshell
I’m kind of over post-rock at this point but as a high schooler this shit really helped open my mind up to longer and more repetitive pieces which was super rewarding and got me into other genres. but I haven’t gone back to it since maybe 2010 and I’m afraid to at this point.

>>130401431i was in the same boat but i spent the last couple of years revisiting my old favorite post rock albums and i was surprised to realize that a lot of them still hold up despite all the time that has past, my evolving tastes, and the massive 'crescedndo-core' smear campaign that online music discussions have perpetuated. sure my opinion shifted on a couple of records but for the most part all of the classic mogwai, godspeed, do make say think, broken social scene and explosions records are still great despite what the naysayers might say. go back and listen to 'how strange, innocence', it might surprise you how incredible that album is. there is magic on that record and it has that youthful excitement lightning in a bottle sound that's so rare to find that took me back to a time and place i never thought id experience again
bump, is there stuff like this that actually has pay off?
>>130401336Your Hand in Mine is a pretty generous payoff.>>130401431The genre really left me behind since it devolved into generic shit, but I still listen to mostly instrumental music to this day. >this shit really helped open my mind upSame here. Probably more than any other genre, some of those albums redefined what music could be for me.>>130401514Best Ocean Songs track.>>130401728Agreed. Do Make Say Think is wrongfully under appreciated. They only had one bad album, and the rest ranges from greatness to good.
>>130401431Same, although my experience with it happened when I was like 23 in 2018, likewise it broadened my horizons but I could probably go the rest of my life without hearing swans or godspeed, interesting sounds but frustrating how it goes absolutely nowhere.
>>130404229I only know of stuff very roughly in the same ballpark with a payoff.Kashiwa Daisuke - april #02https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pk99IlYq8CgMike Oldfield - Return to Ommadawn https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YxB75bVkYxw&list=OLAK5uy_l39qQGndGCIhZCtJk15Z2mrMLySkTw7Bg&index=1Mike Oldfield - Hergest Ridgehttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PtQSrsNLktA
>>130401336I started using bluesky like a year ago or something like that and especially around that time there was that kind of like ‘the earth is not a cold dead place’ twitter aftermath aesthetic going around, anyway i kind of think that the use of reverb and delay on this album are sort of innovative
Mogwai and GYBE ruined post-rock forever
>>130401728yeah I'm pretty much with you. Loved post-rock when I discovered godspeed and sigur ros in like 2007, eventually decided it's all crescendo bullshit except for like, DMST/Tortoise and all the real OG shit like The For Carnation or Sonora Pine etc. Revisited some of the classics a while ago and they were still sick.I mean I do still agree that crescendo-core is often boring, but not everything that builds to a peak lacks value. If it's just play the same shit over and over again a little louder each time then it's hard to make that interesting, but the concept of having a 'peak' in general is kinda underplayed across most genres. You can get creative with it and do interesting things. Dismissing shit that peaks as 'crescendo-core' is lame, but there absolutely is crescendo-core that accomplishes nothing.>>130404365>Do Make Say Think is wrongfully under appreciated. agree, they're one of the best from that era all things considered. Just the first two tracks on & Yet & Yet are better than most of that eras post-rock
>>130401357Only after 2004 or so.
>>130404229https://youtu.be/BhBo0YZQAAQ?si=rqfV0opE3gD174mA^still one of the best pay offs ive ever heard
>>130401336It's a beautiful album.
>>130401336Since this is a post rock thread, did you guys know This Will Destroy You tours with two different lineups at the same time? What the fuck?
>>130401336i had my first kiss when i was 16 to your hand in minei ended up dating that girl for over a year and we were gonna get married and yadda yadda (young, dumb). that girl ended up breaking my heart. hearing that song still bums me outt. 34 years old now
