can someone explain why this is regarded as some great work ? i just listened to it and am insulted. is it like a joke or something ?
guitar work is really creative/unique as far as indie rock goes (see the opening lead for teeth's like god shoeshine, the arpeggiated bit in heart cooks brain is awesome, the ending jam in trailer trash with the harmonics and trucker's atlas's chord voicings)that's what keeps me hooked. the whole thing has this cool desert atmosphere. i can't really defend the lyrics anymore but it's a cool, cohesive record imo
>>130424082It’s just a consistently good album with a unique tone to it that carries throughout the entirety. Some good standout tracks too, honestly the only issue I could see someone having with it is Isaac’s vocals just not sticking for them but that’s it.
>>130424082CracKKKers are incapable of making good music without stealing from superior Black and Brown people
>>130424082Its a masterpiece and their best album
>>130424082you have to be from the PNW to get it
>>130424288The blues is just Gregorian chants sung by fieldhands
>>130424082you need to be american to appreciate this album
>>130424082Their best album is actually pic rel but low IQ people can't appreciate it.
>>130424465that album went to #1 in the US
even the bass lines and tone are PNW as fuck
>>130424465Quite literally a piece of shit and something that everyone who was involved in it should be ashamed of
for me its interstate 8
>>130424126It's just ripping off post-hardcore bands and adding enough indie rock to make it accessable.
>>130425002it’s not ripping off dude. They were influenced by Pavement, Lync and Polvo. But nobody really sounded like Mm
I’m biased, it’s one of my favourite albums and one of my favourite bands. DESU I think it’s just a good combination of different ideas, post hardcore, indie rock, some noise rock in there too. Some pixies. It’s got a lot of energy, and really addictive guitar work and drumming. Interstate 8 is the best track.
It’s exclusively for people with a soul
>>130424082They were the first to have marina city complex on the album cover that must count for something or something like that

>>130424082Welcome to /mu/core
>>130424082Typical mediocre cracker music overrated by the critics
This album fucking rips. It's got this insane energy. I love the screams, and weird wah wah peddle shit.
>>130424082Isaac's a great songwriter, his guitar work and vocal sound are both very unique, not sure what I can say that the music doesn't say itself. Maybe try some of the more accessible MM albums like Moon and Antarctica or whatever and come back to it. Or you could try Long Drive and see how much of an improvement LCW was.I guess I could say try listening to it drunk. Pretty sure Isaac was hammered the whole time and it does translate well for that. Out of Gas is like the best shit ever
Its sorta like indie rock wild west Beatles white album. Its really good and very varied especially compared to the previous album that blended together much more. Idk LCW has a bit of everything first track gets very quiet very emotional and comes back very hard, then you got a long song like truckers atlas with amazing industrial drums and killer vocal delivery and great distortion hook. Polar opposites is an all around good indie rock pop type single. Cowboy Dan is a great story great vocal melody and has a powerful bridge vocal feels very in control and masculine. Out of gas has a fun chorus plenty more. Overall its probably less consistent than the last record but has higher highs.

>>130424270People criticize the vocals of every big indie rock group but when it comes down to it they are very personal, deeply emotional, and often scream with raw high energy. Pavement, modest mouse, built to spill all excel with those categories and yet people dont hear the soul in it they'd rather praise some generic "good" singer like from one of the many classic rock groups (not to say they dont have soul sometimes)
>>130424294Modest mouse first 3 records are all very good the first 2 being best candidates for best but all of them have notable weak points i feel that makes it hard to firmly pick the best. Always gets me how some of their best tracks from this era like edit the sad parts or positive negative are on eps not even on the albums
>>130424465Pistol is amazing but thats all I can say for that record. Heard a decent new single from the new record, always rooting for an indie rock band to have a good comeback but ive yet to see it from memory. Built to Spill lost their groove after LP5 and then they neutered their live lineup, im a huge fan DONT go see them live until they get another guitarist back in the mix. I saw them with a 5 piece, now they tour with 3. Tell me how they can make shit work with that difference
>>130424895What makes a bassline (and or tone) PNW af. Im from there and love 90s indie and grunge but I couldn't make an observation like that
>closer is one of the weaker tracksITS ALL NICE ON ICE ALL RIGHT. I find a lot of indie have weak closing tracks and occasionally its like the best song>>130425473You may be listening to a deluxe version interstate 8 is on the same named EP. Agree across the board though.
>>130428027Indie screams are so underrated. They may not have the power or sustain of heavy metal but they've got the energy and character dialed, Isaac Brock is great with them, another Stephen Malkmus has a lot of good screams, Unfair for example is chaotic yelling whole way through
tfw you're the bitter buffalo
>>130424126What's wrong with the lyrics?>>130424947>not liking Dashboard and Spitting Venom>>130428356Pistol isn't even on that allbum
Why does all Modest Mouse music sound like corporate commercial jingles???
>>130429596How does Shit Luck or Breakthrough sound like a jingle?
>>130424082album of it's time, back when indie music had its heyday
>>130428356Pistol fucking sucks lmao

>>130429302Oh I mixed up strangers and the ship sank album
>>130429636Breakthrough is probably one of the most mainstreamy sounding songs from its album
