ya just don't get this album. the story behind it. the stakes. lo fi but well mixed and recorded, as if you're in the room with them. the songwriting is good enough you don't mind he can't sing that well. theres almost a literary effect to these songs and in that way i still notice new little things lyrically years down the line.
I used to think this lo fi shit like Silver Jews and AJJ were good but recently I feel pretty fatigued by it for some reason. I think the reason is because there's really only a small handful of artists in this genre that are actually good and most of it is just tryhard shit
>>130440052It's not that, it's just that there's only so much material you can revisit before needing to take a long tolerance break and the quality:shit ratio is way higher than other genres
>>130440024To me one of the things this album is notable for is the frequent use of the word ‘cumbuckets’, now i don’t have any analysis to offer here but only to further append an additional comment and commentary which is that mother of pearl sort of looks like cum and that sometimes those fucked up old pearls that are drippy looking look a lot like cum or something like that anyways those were thoughts that i had about this album and thoughts i had while thinking about this album
>>130440037AJJ is juvenile trash but Silver Jews are incredible and not even that lo-fi>>130441841He only says it twice iirc but yeah it's pretty jarring
I particularly like the song “Daddy don’t cut me off.”Daddy hey daddy I know you’re badBut you once weren’t I knowYou were just madThe tobacco money and the drug shillsAllowed me to pursue my skillsAs a drunk and a man of the streets Until you decided to cut it offAnd let me hang Sorry daddy I have to make sure youKnow. It’s all. Your fault.
>>130442042If you're gonna shit post you could at least do some research. David hadn't had any contacts with his father and most of his family in decades. He died alone and poor in an office the people at Drag City had to let him have for free because of the shape he was in. Doesn't exactly sound like trust fund kid shit to me, dumbass.
>>130442599> in decadesYou sure about that? The ultra-cringe shit he wrote and publicly published about his bad pappy was beyond pathetic. Wonder why he did that? Didn’t seem to bother him too much when he was on the teat.
>>130442644Yes. And you not agreeing with his stance on his father doesn't change that. Very odd fucking thing for you to get upset about. You people are beyond autistic.
>>130442684> Very odd fucking thing for you to get upset about. Who’s upset? You. Sorry if I don’t think this overrated rich boy degenerate was some sort of genius. Yeah, he was ok, and could turn a phrase at times, but come on now.
>>130442733Sure seems like you are. Doing.a lot of mental gymnastics to paint Berman this when when he'd spent years guilt ridden and living in poverty as a result of shunning his family. And one of the best lyricist in music can do s little more than turn a phrase. Sorry none of this fits with the story you have in your head. Again, do some research before you make a buffoon of yourself.
>>130442599David berman’s father were a republican lobbyist or something like that and apparently got worse over the years, the decay of the republican party that is, but a lot of the songs that david also seems about tangentially the experience about divorce and solitude and also connection through that, sort of like, like i feel connected to this anon over here >>130442042because this is some pynchon level song craft and ought to get applauded as to that anyways but starlite walker is probably the most lo fi the poetry of the university of virginia anyway what also has to get remembered is that indie rock sort of enters onto the scene problematically from a divorce door from the 70s and that’s why dallas and dallas in the 70s are importantly to this whole story and malkmus and berman as sort hapless kerouac security guards at the whitney museum of american art, i often feel like doestoevsky in all of this also somehow anyway, which to go back david berman’s father were a republican lobbyist and also the current republican partly is badly decayed according to most metrics probably i would claim
>>130442042the truth of it is they were some of the best examples of DIY punk kids doing their own thing, learning by necessity completely independently. perhaps one of the easiest tropes in music to connect with. but you've somehow arrived at the inverse of what the story actually was. and anyways if you don't like the music would the artist being destitute really add anything to your enjoyment? the other two members of Silver Jews formed Pavement. none of their success was due to anything but the music being able to stand on its own. you're acting as if they were Slowdive or something. from what I can tell his Dad didn't even start earning any real money until the early 2000s and he was the opposite of a generous guy. but i guess you just see through the bullshit. if you don't like or get something you can just accuse the artist of being a rich kid and move on. theres a lot of understandable reasons why someone might not like Silver Jews. but even if what you were saying was true it would still be the laziest possible reason.
>>130444490The thing is, I actually like Silver Jews, I just found the whole, “my poor bad daddy is a bad, bad man” shit he posted to be sort of gay.
try recording lo-fi music yourself. you can't do it. it takes literal studio engineers and custom-built DSP "tape grit" plugins, perfectly layered to get that sound. the truth is, lo-fi was always a construct meant to sneakily deceive us as to the ever-present reality of the trust fund.even the "I'm sorry my rich dad gave me a trust fund" bit is only another double-layered deception. What, now I have to feel bad for you for having a trust fund? Working class guys like me don't have time for that shit. We just don't have trust funds in the first place. And we listen to John Mellencamp, not Springsteen.
i always thinks Malkmus is in this band for some reason>>130447743so you have to make it everyone else's problem too?fuck off
Still the best
