listening to the leak from the last thread, it's much better than the listening party. easier to hear some of the high end textures. also I see what people mean about it reminding them of R35, In the Future sounds like it could have dropped in 95

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2VpNT0V25HU
>>
>>130441665
yes totally. I was already thinking that some of the ambient moments felt quite lynchian, Somewhere Right Now in the Future being another example.
>>
Very disappointing
Tape 05 was very promising
Fantano will probably give it a light 4 o algo
>>
>>130441665
Nah, and I remember this track very well from Fire Walk With Me. First half sounds like a very generic organ tune, second half reminded me of something coming from TCH, like Dayvan Cowboy.
Also, I'm pretty sure the intro of Naraka samples something from their own discography, I have the track in mind, but can't remember from which album...

>>130441726
The Word Becomes Flesh would be what I'd qualify the closest to lynchian in spirit, just by the weirdness yet familiarity of the subject, though it's not the kind of music you hear in his movies.
>>
The album is... boring. Too ethereal, nothing happens. I kinda like the glitchy/bitcrushed vocal samples parts, but I think the album lacks good melodies or something
>>
>>130441731
oh please. Tape 05 is predictable and vanilla by their standards. The rest of the album has personality.
>>
>>130441774
>Also, I'm pretty sure the intro of Naraka samples something from their own discography, I have the track in mind, but can't remember from which album...

I remember now, Pete Standing Alone from MHTRTC, the lead synth is very similar, could even not be a sample, but just reusing the same synth.

Leviathan and Americanada have godlike basswork, first sounds like early NIN, other reminds me of James Ferraro's Skidrow textures (that 80s slap synthbass) but actual masterful melodies and engineering
>>
Father and Son is so good, goddamn
>>
My impression so far is that its surprisingly far from their old sound, especially in that it feels less consistently 'organic'. Honestly, it almost sounds like a young new artist who's just heavily inspired by BOC, lo-fi hip hop and IDM. But it's pretty good.

It's a dark Chillout album, but nowhere near as dark as the promo made it seem. What's definitely missing are those usual bangers where you know from the very first second that the track is going to be amazing. It's not their best album, but the 2/5 reviews are completely absurd.

It really feels like a kind of reboot of their sound, and I'm hopeful that this could mean more material coming at a higher frequency afterwards, because they're not trying too hard to perfect the old sound all over again.

Best track by far is Naraka
>>
yeah,I'm thinking we're gemmy

fuckkkk that was a borderline religious experience. i haven’t even listened to music in months, and if I did it was in my car speakers for a few minutes. so this was a total system overload. this was like being touched by pure love, especially during “Deep Time” and “You retreat…”the album is close to hell interface and Old tunes/random 35 tracks which is my favorite. lots of passing vignettes that force you to enjoy the moment and let it pass. pure ecstasy 10/10 album.

I listened only once, it sounded like Coldplay or whatever normie retard stuff, mixed with mumble rap and spoken word samples no one cares about. The wav files went straight to the bin, don't want to hear that a second time in my life.

album is pretty weak. low effort chillwave bullshit with almost no progression inside most tracks. cringeworthy edgy/overt vocal and lyrics usage. it's like a nu metal approach to boc. retreat is great, though, not because part b sounds like classic boc but because it has some effort put into its progression and some subtler elements in its mix. overall lazy af but who cares with a fanbase that resembles a cult.

Having read a shitton of reactions about "You Retreat in Time and Space" I'm surprised that to at least me, it doesn't feel particularly "classic boc" to me. The final track to me however felt pure BoC., the heartbeat isn't something they would have done before that's maybe the only element

but in terms of texture and sounds "I Saw Through Platonia" is classic BoC
>>
>>130443076

>>
>>130443124
Given the rejection of nostalgia that this album seems to be, "I Saw Through Platonia" is like declaring the death of it (for them) with the literal heart beat going out over a classic beatless BoC tune playing, irony being that a literal heart beat is the only "beat" the track has

"You Retreat in Time and Space" feels very Campfire Headphase to me. It's shimmering and bright and almost hazy. Felt like them saying goodbye.
As >>130443161 mentioned: the heartbeat is also a dead giveaway: they're packing it in. This is the final BoC album.

I wouldn't say Inferno is them at their best. It might be skew toward the worse end of their discography. But I can see what they were trying to accomplish. You can hear a lot of Societas x Tape here. It's them paying homage to their influences, revisiting their past, while also eschewing old techniques to avoid being too old hat.
I really liked: Age of Capricorn, Naraka, The World Becomes Flesh, Blood in the Labyrinth and You Retreat in Time and Space. Some other tracks are interesting, but become a little too discordant.
Final ranking: Geogaddi > The Campfire Headphase > MHTRTC >= Inferno > TH.
And, to be fair, each of those LPs is at least a 7.5/8 of 10. Good career and well deserved praise. If only the fan base was a little less gay.

>Felt like them saying goodbye.
It truly does, it has all the production quirks and melody structure from their most beloved tracks, the first half reminds me of a funeral.
>the heartbeat is also a dead giveaway: they're packing it in. This is the final BoC album.
Too evident, people said the same thing with Tomorrow's Harvest considering the message of the album. I think one of them had a near death experience and the album is a way to represent a guilty conscience, the soundtrack of briefly being in hell before you wake up.

I'm going to hell, T.

Honestly, it was super hyped up by the listening party crowd, but it didn't do much for me, too sappy and emo and clashes with the rest of the album.

Tbh i'm completely satisfied, there's some tracks i don't like obviously, but i love most of the album. I'm glad they went with such a drastic change, it's so twangy and electro.

I couldn't resist and listened to the leak. I don't think this is a goodbye, to me it sounds like they're getting the hang of things again, remember it's been 13 years since they put out an LP

I think some people will complain about the lack of atmosphere because it's not building as vague a mood state but rather seems to intentionally be conveying a narrative shape that has a few overlapping forms. the first is as an explicit ritual, if geogaddi is the experience of the uncanniness of cults from the outside, Inferno is a descent into fear and terror with brief respites and a permanent dread that is anchored around the living world.

the second read is that this is an existential album, as signposted by the song titles (1420khz, helium, hydrogen...deep time, Capricorn, narrative, ect) all point to deep time and cosmic existentialism. this is underpinned by tracks like Memory Death (where an EKG style tone chimes through whirling unstable voices as if mirroring semi consciousness) or Platonia with the formless drone ending in the sound of an aux being disconnected while a heartbeat drums.

the point then seems to be more existential with the inferno less being hell itself or a ritual and simply an allegory for non-existence while the album tries to delineate between the euphoria of life and the uncertain, unstable and eternal death

in the first reading You Retreat feels like a false enlightenment after ritual pressure, in the latter, a final gasp of nostalgia like life flashing before your eyes

tellingly, the album seems to semi-frequently dip into the aesthetics of their pre-warp sound but updated and smeared with TH-style production as if to make a point about the finality of time, that eventually BOC compresses together into a retrospective smear with no artistic contours. it's literally a hauntological album but the history being plumbed is BOC's own
entropy must be important here to because the marketing campaign was done with faux generation loss tapes and even tape 05 which contaibs enoygh resolution to be coherent, is still degraded and missing parts of the song.

I haven't listened to the record yet but based on the complaints people have had about some of the tracks being 'too ethereal' or sleepy (they're idiots), it makes sense that the lead single is the most 'accessible' one. at the end of the day they have to promote the record to as many people as possible because they are in the business of doing so. even if it that rubs artistically apprehensible or whatever. that being said I am so looking forward to sleepy boc time tomorrow evening

someone mentioned every album of theirs is a departure from the next, yeah i guess but i have all their shit in a playlist that i frequently put in shuffle, and all of it feels like its in the same world and navigating similar ideas, it all flows and works. but this one def stands out and feels so different, production and content wise, some shit straight up feels ai. theres such a lack of identifying moments and melody, it just seems like a placeholder moodboard album, and im so bummed i feel that way
>>
Just curious if this is anybody's first BoC LP and what they thought upon first listen.
Probably many old heads here right now, revisiting /mu/ for this occasion. BoC is now unc tier. I'm having trouble imagining anybody younger than the age of 34 will enjoy this. And, if they do, they've likely listened to their prior work.
>>
>>130444997
i gotta disagree personally, it's a bit jarring for sure since it's still so fresh in the mind but keep in mind this was the biggest gap between releases since TCHP and TH, anyone would change drastically composition wise in that span of time, but after mixing this release with the rest of my shuffleboard of their discog i think it fits right in, it feels like their way older works just a lot less tapey in some areas and less low pass filtering
