How the fuck do you retroactively call all japanese funk/soul from the 70s to 80s "city pop"? Imagine if people started calling 80s american soul/funk/jazz "urban groove"?

More specifically, "city pop" and "city music" was a marketing term in the early 1980s to shill a handful of Japanese pop musicians, rather than a genre term.
City pop as an actual style/genre was coined in the early 2000s to loosely encompass Japanese pop musicians that sounded like those handful of musicians.

Alright and the other thing i would claim is that ‘city pop’ as a genre is sort of situated from beyond the end of history and thats partly the way that genre gets constituted and alright also the way that ‘city pop’ is ‘constituted ontology’ before the last.fm ‘algorithm’ is extremely unclear, the algorithm to last.fm is the gutterpunk to the internet, all the last.fm algorithm talks about is the band crass but that just shows the wisdom to the gutterpunks anyways that’s besides the point was is to the point is also the textural sense of smooth and also grit and sand the materiality of the figural material that gets evoked by an interest in filters and lenses and magnifying glasses and is part of the sometimes germanic photo documentary west german sebald texture to the past of flying the blessed concorde to or into cologne or something like that, i feel like this claims more about the furniture of ikea then about the daily life of japan or japanese pop music if i wrote a city pop song the song would be called like waiting for dragon quest and be about waiting in line all day for the new dragon quest game and the whole thing would just be star wars jokes and pondering on or about kevin smith and patton oswalt and then keats show up is like ‘ i was a redbranch king’ and everybody ‘ is like what does that even mean’ and keats is like ‘read my tome on astrology’ and everybody is like ‘already done, talk some more about connacht’
