M.I.U. Album [Brother/Reprise, 1978]
On The Beach Boys Love You, lyrics like those of "Solar System" may have been a little embarrassing, but basically their silliness registered as charming. "Match Point of Our Love" ("Early in the game when you broke me/Just like a serve") and "Belles of Paris" ("There's a chapel `Sacre Coeur' in quaint Montmarte [sic]/In the open air the painters show their art") are just dumb, and despite a lot of fairly pleasant music and a few passable songs, so is this. there must have been about three people still in the market for a new Beach Boys album in 1978

The post-Brian comeback era Beach Boys when they were making weird pseudo-art slop and disco backing.

it was the last time they were still trying to be current instead of a nostalgia act

love you was the only artsy album from the time, and that was more of a result of brian being off his meds and the boys letting him have an album for once. adult/child was shitty and was rightfully scrapped, MIU is a cobbled together album with some OK songs but y no means is it an artistic effort.
the disco track was just mike fucking around chasing trends. the beach boys have been in the same boomer jukebox category since MIU.

The rest of the albums are aggressively mediocre, with occasional moments of kino and slightly less occasional moments of whatever the opposite of kino is. LA, MIU, KTSA and BB85 each have one or two solid songs, one or two cringefests, and a lot of forgettable filler. I can see how people can make a case for one of the 70s LPs, but given the choice, it's better to suck in a horrible way than suck in a boring, lifeless way.

Al Jardine was ready to kill Steve Levine (the producer of BB85) for the horrible 80s production on it.

MIU is the best of these even though they're all trash.

MIU has Brian's best singing since the 60s but a lot of filler on here. BB85 has bleh singing from both Mike and Brian and Bruce sounds like he has laryngitis. Carl's songs are decent but the 80s production is hard to stomach.

Brian seems pretty focused on MIU and delivers a solid vocal performance. Carl and Dennis are almost AWOL though the latter delivers a great one with "My Diane."

MIU isn't great, but patricians know Love You from 77 is their second best album
>>
>>130484480
Brian was pretty involved on BB85, the album is not as bad as it could have been given the recent demise of Dennis.

They completely lost their quality control senses after Sunflower. Each session would see a large batch of songs written, but they consistently made poor decisions on what to record and what to leave off albums.
>>
most people agree that LU is the only decent post-Brian comeback album
>>

MIU and LU get shit on for the disco production. Yes they sound like their time and why would they not? Most of the hateraid comes from autists who think there's not enough Brian art music experimentation on them.

Dennis seemed to be the one who was writing contemporary-sounding songs instead of peddling nostalgia.
