No seriously, what's the appeal? Why do boomers venerate this guy?
>>130499455Billy Joel is a great songwriter.
>>130499455radio full of non-stop slop from no talentsdude comes along who actually knows how to write catchy melodies> brainlet zoom zoom: durr what's the appeal?
Most songs are worse than Billy Joel songs
Billy Joel is the closest Boomers got to being aware of anything other than themselves.
>>130499455Critics didn't like him because he was popular and had hits, and wasn't punk or New Wave (aside from Glass Houses)
>>130499455>>130499773Joel gets unfairly slagged for the fact that CBS imposed slick AC production on his albums instead of letting him use his touring band which was much more rocking.
>>130499455Listen to The Stranger
>>130499455you totally have to be from the Northeast or something to "get" him
>>130499787he once did an series where he reviewed all of his own albums and said that yeah, Columbia made him put all that orchestral MOR slop on Piano Man. he said they had top-tier session musicians but it wasn't really the sound he was going for.
>>130499773there's more. Joel was totally affiliated with the Mafia and gigged in Mafia-run lounges and clubs (in all fairness they owned about 75% of clubs and lounges in the Northeast back then), and critics didn't like the entire idea of that back when they were pushing punk since they got the idea that he was the resurrection of Tony Bennett or something.
>>130500063If you read Cuckgau's reviews of Joel he absolutely does lean into that idea that he was a plot to restore loungecore which rock was supposed to have made obsolete.
>>130499773this is probably correct take.most boomer critics were english majors who thought rock music should be more about blowing normie minds with songs from perspective of heroin addicts rather than just catchy melodies and tales of normie life for middle school girls who made up bulk of record buying public.
wtf what is the appeal of one of the most radio friendly, catchy, accessible songwriters ever i don't get it????
>>130500156Also it was very important that you sounded black or at least somewhat rooted in black music styles.
>>130499821lived in new york all my life and cannot fucking stand him desu.
They say it's not a supermarket in the Northeast if you go in there and don't hear at least one Billy Joel song on the sound system.
>>130499455his music sounds like long island or philly to me. any time it comes on i imagine being some italian dockworker in 1978
>>130500415He isn't as prevalent as he used to be. Tay Tay and her various wannabees have largely taken over.
>>130501096I never hear Swift in supermarkets, most of the time it's 80s music or something like that.
>>130501015>any time it comes on i imagine being some italian dockworker in 1978This is another album that totally gives off that vibe.
>>130499455Neither do I. Thx OP for being the least gay poster on mu
>>130499455what kind of songwriting do you prefer? some sad skinny faggot staring at his shoes crying in to a microphone about how he got dumped?
>>130501015Applies as well to Bon Jovi. Like, "You Give Love A Bad Name" makes me feel like I'm walking in downtown Philly in 1986.
>>130501141proves how meaningless she actually is. the Red/1989 singles were run into the ground in 2013-14 and you haven't heard them since. totally buried.
>>130499455I am not his fan, but I heard this song once and was searchin for it for 6 years, so maybe there is something in himhttps://youtu.be/LVlDSzbrH5M
Joel spent a large chunk of the 90s and most of his money in a prolonged litigation against his former manager. He ultimately recouped most of it through touring.
>>130499455its just new york fags who pretend he's on Springsteen's level
>>130501502Springsteen was never more than a hand puppet of Rolling Stone Magazine and Jon Landau though.
>>130501521lol ok
>>130500191What is it about critics and white self hatred
>>130501598theyre smart enough to be brow beaten but not smart enough to look up who invented the guitar or piano, etc
>>130499510
If I have to hear Uptown Girl one more fucking time, I'm gonna snap.
>>130499455His first appearance on record was at 15 when he played drums on "Leader of the Pack."
Billy was an amazing songwriter and an even better performer. Go to his YouTube channel and check out some of the archival performances from back in the day.
>>130501858You do know he has better songs than "Uptown Girl", no? Even some of his more underrated songs like "Say Goodbye to Hollywood", "She's Always A Woman" and "Sleeping With the Television On". Explore a little, I think you'll wind up finding a favorite Billy Joel tune.
UPTOOOOWN GEEEEEEE-HEEEER-URRRRRL>>130499819How about you sit on your arm and give yourself the stranger?
>>130503971AIM saw him turn into generic 80s slop much like Hall & Oates did around the same time.
Ya know I'm thinking it might be time to try Don't Ask Me Why at next karaoke night...
>>130504463And that's the worst thing in the world how? Still better than anything that isn't Metallica and such made in that time.
>>130499455In the same vein, what's the appeal of David Bowie?
>>130499455They're all big Attila fans.
>>130499455another thread pretending a great musician isnt any good. this dude has been playing and selling out MSG for the last couple years. boomers, at least the faggots on the steve hoffman forum, dont seem to like him very much>>130503971>Explore a little, I think you'll wind up finding a favorite Billy Joel tune.this album in particular is one great song after another
>>130505423Hard agree with you there, anon.
I like how he tried to push himself as some kind of hard nosed, working class guy when he was some flighty art school piano man type who likes show tunes and doo wop.
>>130506175bassed
>>130499455(its because hes black)
Boomers adore all Jews.
>>130506211lusers adore all blues
>>130505891whatever man... im going be enjoying all his music. the same goes for the eagles. i dont even like most music from the 70s but those two are great
>>130506175>who likes show tunes and doo wopYou'd be more weird to be a New Yorker of his generation and not like that stuff.
