In the early 80s NWOBHM was totally underground in the US and was really only well-known in the UK, Europe, and maybe Japan. Doom, thrash, death metal, and black metal were only starting to bubble up, and Sabbath worship bands like Saint Vitus were literally considered part of the punk scene because they were too weird for anything else. If you told people in the early 80s you were into metal, they'd think you meant KISS, Van Halen, and Mötley Crüe. It was only really the thrash and doom kids who saw that stuff as false, and they were tiny groups.

I knew Kiss was an inspiration to Manson so I checked them out expecting something similar but I was disappointed, it was just dad rock, not what I expected from metal or hard rock at the time.
