am I the only one who thinks her solo shit really good but then nearly everything with Big Thief is boring as shit? Is Big Thief just her way to make money to fund the shit she actually cares about?https://youtu.be/yu8AHN5oHzs
post more music
>>130558224both her solo music and with big thief sounds pretty similar with the same vibes and alli think its your mind playin tricks in you or maybe simply prefer the sad girl aesthetics rather than a whole band encapsulating that vibe, which naturally makes you like one over the other one
>>130558396here's some of her solo shithttps://youtu.be/PEMsgRgCceAhttps://youtu.be/v9f6jkeqtvshttps://youtu.be/qgv7XrH7IkIand here's some of her shit with her band big thiefhttps://youtu.be/oacUgWXrqwchttps://youtu.be/0fbA_agbrOghttps://youtu.be/UIcVwH47uxQI think those are the most popular Big Thief songs but I don't really know. Looked up the spotify page and those were near the top. Didn't include Simulation Swarm because that song is actually really good and was a solo song first.>>130558429hmm maybe, I don't think I'm really biased towards sad girl desu, at least generally. Instead of me preferring sad girl it might just be that I specifically don't really like the alt-country rock sound that Big Thief does, but it really does seem to me like she just saves her best songwriting for solo records
>>130558224>am I the only oneyes
>>130558224I would claim that part of that might be recording the big thief bands seem to have had much more multipart writing and overdub production and the solo stuff seems as if much were written just fingerpicking over the guitar and using microphone to record guitar and voice at the same time or some primitive jack white shellac 78s recording production technique like that or something like that
>>130558547these are all great, thank you
>>130558224i feel like she gets too samey on her own, probably cause 90 percent of her stuff is just a guitar and her voice. her 2 hour live album from last year is really good though
Her live album is far and away my favourite project from the combined catalogue, but tracks like Not and Black Diamonds are incredibly special to me too.
nah I think the same. she's a good writer and a good singer, she puts a lot of expression into her vocal melody and phrasing without belting anything out and that suits an intimate, acoustic, stripped back kind of sound. the stuff with the band only serves to dilute that good stuff without adding anything of value of its own because the music is pretty much all bland and forgettable. its not awful or annoying, its just eh. shes a distinctive musician with a flavour of her own, the band are cookie cutter and musically anonymous.also I thought she was a tranny at first
