I used to love Riot in high school, almost 10 years ago. Listened to Narita all the time, especially the title track, even though the major key part sounded like Green Day to me and Green Day was GAY GAY DISNEYGAY (it still is, but this is a teenage metalhead retard we're talking about). They were one of those bands that I felt was kinda mine, since you could indeed look up some things about them but there wasn't any real discussion you could find. Same deal with Samhain. Shame they never quite made it, NYC was all about punk back then, but by the same measure they should have had the market cornered there and been a flagship band for the area.

Here's a topic for y'all: 10/10 songs on otherwise mediocre albums.

My pick is Ram It Down. One of my absolute favorite Priest songs, but the rest of the albums, with the exception of a couple more songs, it pretty lame.

i do not like this band past shout at the devil, but wild side's one of motley's best songs. vince actually sings decently well (a rarity), the opening riff's really memorable and the hook is fucking catchy. i wish the rest of the album was like this, but most of it's just boring ass, not-catchy glam like the previous record.

How do they fucking do it? How? They are fucking geriatric, Ian is literally going deaf and yet they still manage to do it better than their great grandchildren.

Ram it Down ain't mediocre, its production is. Unlike Maiden which had Martin Birch to clean their sound up, Priest went from producer to producer and their sound suffered as a result.

Better than Point of Entry but overall a weak album. The song Heavy Metal would be so much better were it two minutes shorter because there weren't enough riffs to justify the runtime.

I thought I was the only one on /trad/ who loves AOR. Guess I'm wrong.
I've listened to a lot of AOR over the past few years. Excluding Praying Mantis (who have been mentioned here before as they are /trad/), some AOR bands to check out include Ten, Dare, Newman, Work of Art, Brother Firetribe, and Survivor (yes, that Survivor - of the big 1980s AOR bands and artists, they're the only really solid one IMHO).
There are some other artists with standout albums but those ones I listed have pretty consistent discographies throughout (Survivor and Ten excluded - Caught in the Game is where the former really hits their stride and the latter loses steam after Far Beyond the World).

both. there's plenty of metallic riffing but there's a rock sensibility to it all + the jam in the middle is pretty bluesy.

Probably because their first album isn't as cut-and-clear AOR and that they had a ton of connections with Iron Maiden early on (Dennis Stratton would eventually become a member of Prayint Mantis for well over a decade). NWOBHM is also very broad - Vardis was basically a boogie rock band and they're NWOBHM.
>>130603084
Pretty good but I don't revisit them too often. It's funny how two Journey spinoffs (them and Hardline) managed to churn out better albums than Journey ever could.

These, though I would very debatably add Montrose. They still owe a lot to the blues, but Ronnie's guitar work is very streamlined compared to his contemporaries and "Space Station #5" is basically a Speranza-period Riot song from a time before Riot existed.
>>
>>130611067
In my opinion Montrose fall into the same camp that a LOT of '70s hard rock bands reside. Where they have a few genuine metal songs, and some others that have elements of it; but they're ultimately just a rock band.
>Space Station #5
However is a very metallic song for 1973, and just for that I'd include them in the early metal conversation. (Well, that and them helping to form the American hard rock scene) I'd also raise Bad Motor Scooter off of their debut - when that song ramps up in intensity around the first minute mark, it gets pretty freakin' metal.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_B2XJsKUtjQ&t=52s
>>
>>130611690
I feel like Ronnie could have very easily done a lot more in terms of metallic work but I think he preferred playing around with a variety of different influences - hard rock, AOR, progressive rock, early metal, and jazz-rock - instead of going fully metal.
I think the heaviest thing he ever did was the first fifty seconds of "Four Horsemen", which more or less inspired Dave Mustaine's entire career: https://youtu.be/vboiyE5x5Uk

Definitely the heaviest that I've heard from him (and up there for 1980 overall) but the rest of the song is still pretty metallic too, the galloping riff in particular reminds me of Altar of the King by Riot. Great song.

Voyager's very good. I like Davey Pattison a lot, he did a few albums with Robin Trower in the late '80s that are good if you like your AOR a bit on bluesier side.
>>
>>130616933
I'm not really much of an AOR guy most of the time (really, I can count all of the times I've listened to an album of the stuff on one hand) but I might give those Trower albums a shot. I tend to like AOR more when it's more rooted in rock/blues than pop.

warrior is THE first power metal song
>>
>>130657060
Of all of the Sabbath vocalists I think Gillan is the only other one besides Ozzy that really fits their classic sound. They have different approaches, y'know Ozzy sounds ominous, Ian sounds manic, but Ian can sing creepy just as well and Ozzy's best vocals are from when he was more intense.
>>
>>130658444
That's also why I really liked him on Born Again. Gillan brought back that spooky feeling to Sabbath again that the Dio era lacked.
>>
>>130659340
To be fair, the spooky element had been fading from their music since Sabbath Bloody Sabbath (right about when they started going for more prog influences rather than blues), but I agree. To be honest, when I listen to Dio-era Sabbath, and particularly Heaven and Hell; the only thing that really reminds me I'm still listening to a BS record is Iommi's guitar tone. Neon Knights, Children of the Sea and the title track in terms of actual instrumentation sound like Dio tracks, Lady Evil sounds like a Rainbow track, and so on.

Necrobump but that was such a good band. The guitar player was on the Hurricane Slave to the Thrill record before shacking back up with Kal Swan for Bad Moon Rising, which is also some good shit. I think the center of attention thing is spot on. My impression of him is that he doesn't work well in a group, because he wants to be in the spotlight all the time. But he's a businessman and knew that he'd get more spotlight beside Paul. I think that's the reason he stuck around after the 70s but was still mostly absent from doing Kiss stuff other than the necessary tours.

I'd add Half-Life to this section, fits in with Halo.
>Traditional Heavy Metal:
NES Mega Man. Honestly, surprised it's not included. The heavy metal influence in multiple songs is undeniable and playing the games themselves while blasting doesn't feel out of place at all.

Yeah if you watch any interview with him where it's just him and the interviewer you will notice that he is a lot more easygoing.
>But he's a businessman and knew that he'd get more spotlight beside Paul. I think that's the reason he stuck around after the 70s but was still mostly absent from doing Kiss stuff other than the necessary tours.
He was always a businessman first and foremost, which isn't actually a bad thing because that's a large reason why they became as big as they did.

Hopes and Dreams and Save the world both have prominent chuggy electric guitar. (The former is even classified as symphonic metal on RYM, lol) Other songs have very fast drumming and bombastic leads that could totally sound like power metal if they were simply played on guitar, such as Asgore or Spear of Justice.

Deltarune has two undeniably metal songs, Vs. Susie and Knock You Down. (The latter sounds pretty similar to Wasted by Def Leppard) Also a lot of songs in the same boat as Asgore, such as Chaos King, Attack of the killer Queen, Black Knife, Guardian, Spawn, etc.

Consistently better than the first album, but outside of Evil and Woman I don't think there's anything essential here. Just good heavy rock.

Incredible. I can really hear the Montrose and Foghat influence on them.

Not surprised. Overdrive SOUNDS like a Montrose song.

The riffs on this album make me want to drive a rideable lawnmower at 8 AM

So it can't be 7:59 or 8:01, it has to be exactly 8:00?

Anyone here like the band Couldron? (The one from Canada, not the British one)

Been listening to picrel for years now, really fucking good prog album with Tate like vocals. I never saw it being discussed outside progarchives, rym or metallum which is kind of weird, it has everything to be considered a classic just like Spiral Architect's A Sceptic's Universe (but way better)

In Ruin is their best imo but New Gods has a lot of great moments too. Their first couple albums are alright.

I’ve been trying to get my into Skull fist. I actually really like everything about there songs BUT the vocals. I’ve noticed that a lot of NWOTHM bands have weird, overly fruity vocals that just turn me off.

Nigger that's literally the best part about the music

Good release, first two songs are the highlights. Also this is easily my favorite VS logo. Sleek and a great mix of the first two logos they had.

Highly underrated speed. Starts off as nothing too special, but around the halfway point it rapidly picks up and does not stop until the end. There's some lead-playing here that really reminds me of ADX's first record and Agent Steel.

It was pretty much Diamond Head on steroids.

They should've almost been as big as Europe.
