I used to love Riot in high school, almost 10 years ago. Listened to Narita all the time, especially the title track, even though the major key part sounded like Green Day to me and Green Day was GAY GAY DISNEYGAY (it still is, but this is a teenage metalhead retard we're talking about). They were one of those bands that I felt was kinda mine, since you could indeed look up some things about them but there wasn't any real discussion you could find. Same deal with Samhain. Shame they never quite made it, NYC was all about punk back then, but by the same measure they should have had the market cornered there and been a flagship band for the area.
second single off deep purple's new album is out, pretty good bluesy rockerhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z4RpBEg5uis
>>130570807your relationship with riot sounds funnily similar to mine lol
Riot is good because it's an underrated band. Underrated bands NEED to be good, (((overrated))) ones can play whatever and still be praised.
Here's a topic for y'all: 10/10 songs on otherwise mediocre albums. My pick is Ram It Down. One of my absolute favorite Priest songs, but the rest of the albums, with the exception of a couple more songs, it pretty lame.
>>130571239>Judas PriestMore like Ram It In haha
>>130571239I like that song but Hard as Iron is my favorite on the record. And to answer your question, Streets of Gold by Venator
>>130571239i do not like this band past shout at the devil, but wild side's one of motley's best songs. vince actually sings decently well (a rarity), the opening riff's really memorable and the hook is fucking catchy. i wish the rest of the album was like this, but most of it's just boring ass, not-catchy glam like the previous record.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9sQDlUIysbA
>>130570935How do they fucking do it? How? They are fucking geriatric, Ian is literally going deaf and yet they still manage to do it better than their great grandchildren.
>>130571239Ram it Down ain't mediocre, its production is. Unlike Maiden which had Martin Birch to clean their sound up, Priest went from producer to producer and their sound suffered as a result.

this is that general that thinks that shit like alice in chains and sleep token is "traditional metal", right?

>>130598495I thought I was the only one on /trad/ who loves AOR. Guess I'm wrong.I've listened to a lot of AOR over the past few years. Excluding Praying Mantis (who have been mentioned here before as they are /trad/), some AOR bands to check out include Ten, Dare, Newman, Work of Art, Brother Firetribe, and Survivor (yes, that Survivor - of the big 1980s AOR bands and artists, they're the only really solid one IMHO).There are some other artists with standout albums but those ones I listed have pretty consistent discographies throughout (Survivor and Ten excluded - Caught in the Game is where the former really hits their stride and the latter loses steam after Far Beyond the World).

>>130606283both. there's plenty of metallic riffing but there's a rock sensibility to it all + the jam in the middle is pretty bluesy.
>>130603024Probably because their first album isn't as cut-and-clear AOR and that they had a ton of connections with Iron Maiden early on (Dennis Stratton would eventually become a member of Prayint Mantis for well over a decade). NWOBHM is also very broad - Vardis was basically a boogie rock band and they're NWOBHM.>>130603084Pretty good but I don't revisit them too often. It's funny how two Journey spinoffs (them and Hardline) managed to churn out better albums than Journey ever could.
>>130570416great heavy rock, and one of the first albums that i know of that actually mentions heavy metal as a genre of musichttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=InEW0Do2Kpwhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QKEutK9Vee0https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PH5v0xkbMd4
Jesus Christ the drumming on this album is insane and so are the riffs. The entire album is unrelenting.
What do you guys view as the first Heavy Metal bands post Sabbath? I'd always say UFO, Rainbow, Budgie, Uriah Heep, Deep Purple stuff like that. Any I'm missing?
>>130608928BangBuffaloJerusalemSir Lord BaltimoreScorpions (bit later than the others, they went metal in ‘75)
>>130608928>>130611003These, though I would very debatably add Montrose. They still owe a lot to the blues, but Ronnie's guitar work is very streamlined compared to his contemporaries and "Space Station #5" is basically a Speranza-period Riot song from a time before Riot existed.
>>130611067In my opinion Montrose fall into the same camp that a LOT of '70s hard rock bands reside. Where they have a few genuine metal songs, and some others that have elements of it; but they're ultimately just a rock band. >Space Station #5However is a very metallic song for 1973, and just for that I'd include them in the early metal conversation. (Well, that and them helping to form the American hard rock scene) I'd also raise Bad Motor Scooter off of their debut - when that song ramps up in intensity around the first minute mark, it gets pretty freakin' metal. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_B2XJsKUtjQ&t=52s
>>130611690I feel like Ronnie could have very easily done a lot more in terms of metallic work but I think he preferred playing around with a variety of different influences - hard rock, AOR, progressive rock, early metal, and jazz-rock - instead of going fully metal.I think the heaviest thing he ever did was the first fifty seconds of "Four Horsemen", which more or less inspired Dave Mustaine's entire career: https://youtu.be/vboiyE5x5Uk
>>130612924>I think the heaviest thing he ever did was the first fifty seconds of "Four Horsemen"Definitely the heaviest that I've heard from him (and up there for 1980 overall) but the rest of the song is still pretty metallic too, the galloping riff in particular reminds me of Altar of the King by Riot. Great song.
>>130570416Four Horsemen's great, and the opener and closer are also really good. Can't say I cared for the rest though there's nothing bad. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tX4tGwEIvSIhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UYYq1SCIKSY
>>130570416Starts off pretty shabby but side B saves it, especially The City and the title track. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hy3FYdH6vfkhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QYDcFz9Y_Kc
Ted Nugent - Out of Control https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V9viiYEmiyo
>>130603084I like the first album but think the second one was a pretty dramatic dropoff. Kevin Chalfant's probably the best Perry clone.Don't think either Bad English or The Storm ever came close to Journey proper desu.>>130615351Voyager's very good. I like Davey Pattison a lot, he did a few albums with Robin Trower in the late '80s that are good if you like your AOR a bit on bluesier side.
>>130616933I'm not really much of an AOR guy most of the time (really, I can count all of the times I've listened to an album of the stuff on one hand) but I might give those Trower albums a shot. I tend to like AOR more when it's more rooted in rock/blues than pop.
>>130617209https://youtu.be/bx6xhfDQ49Y?si=PGawuURjY025MAJOhttps://youtu.be/NkojDasOpvU?si=_oSSNvorj4yFYCVy
>>130617278Both of these are good, but I like the first considerably more. Has more going on musically and a catchier melody. I do really like this guy's vocals, though. He walks a great line between rock and pop.
I thought Manowar was a one hit wonder at best. Maybe two. Until I heard Fighting the World.

>>130657060Of all of the Sabbath vocalists I think Gillan is the only other one besides Ozzy that really fits their classic sound. They have different approaches, y'know Ozzy sounds ominous, Ian sounds manic, but Ian can sing creepy just as well and Ozzy's best vocals are from when he was more intense.
>>130658444That's also why I really liked him on Born Again. Gillan brought back that spooky feeling to Sabbath again that the Dio era lacked.
>>130659340To be fair, the spooky element had been fading from their music since Sabbath Bloody Sabbath (right about when they started going for more prog influences rather than blues), but I agree. To be honest, when I listen to Dio-era Sabbath, and particularly Heaven and Hell; the only thing that really reminds me I'm still listening to a BS record is Iommi's guitar tone. Neon Knights, Children of the Sea and the title track in terms of actual instrumentation sound like Dio tracks, Lady Evil sounds like a Rainbow track, and so on.

Raise your hand if you've never heard of this band. I think they're amazing. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g4yYBaj5SNg
>>130665916I've only listened to Far from the Madding Crowd, which I loved. I don't know why I never got around to the rest of their stuff.
>>130666011That's unironically my all time favorite album. All their albums are great, but the first two albums are much more prog oriented while the last three leans more towards power metal with some folk elements.
>>130573410The general actually makes much more sense when you realise it's the glam general and has absolutely nothing to do with traditional heavy metal.

>>130685457Probably my favorite on that album.
How's this hold up as an '80s metal pastiche?
>>130682233Kinda. I started to play to my dad's Sex Pistols CDs when I was 5 but he played hard rock and metal all the time also. I've heard a lot of Manowar growing up when I walked into our weight room while dad was training.>>130685503Cover art looks cool as hell. Have to check this one out.>>130686827Never heard it.

>>130695921>>130699849Because old fogey 'traditional' metal this general loves was already seen as outdated, tiresome and boring by 1990, so basically no one was making it. But the people here wanted to continue their chart autism so they just started allowing other genres (which as you noticed, invalidates the older charts)
>>130699970Nice
>>130704466The satyr played by Danny DeVito in Hercules sure grew up.

>>130714648Ace really dominates this, wow. Paul's pretty entertaining too, Peter is just kind of there, but Gene is sort of painful to watch. It's like he's an obelisk with makeup. Just sits there, tries to make small talk.
>>130714648Gene can actually be a pretty funny guy but he has too big of an ego and always gets uppity when he isn't the center of attention. If he had relaxed and laughed along with Ace's antics instead of trying to hog the spotlight he would have come across as much more likeable.
>>130575122Necrobump but that was such a good band. The guitar player was on the Hurricane Slave to the Thrill record before shacking back up with Kal Swan for Bad Moon Rising, which is also some good shit. He also played on Killing The Dragon with Dio. The Tytan Rough Justice record is pretty good too but a few songs on there are kind of a trip. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DmOiFt1K8Iohttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3g9j56nsRG8https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V-yiEVRycJ8https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N134OVjE5jU
>>130716228I think the center of attention thing is spot on. My impression of him is that he doesn't work well in a group, because he wants to be in the spotlight all the time. But he's a businessman and knew that he'd get more spotlight beside Paul. I think that's the reason he stuck around after the 70s but was still mostly absent from doing Kiss stuff other than the necessary tours.

Honestly, surprised it's not included. The heavy metal influence in multiple songs is undeniable and playing the games themselves while blasting doesn't feel out of place at all.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ojWBRzs8-tshttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FRa4LHSJf_Mhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aTbfpkByIM8https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tgY2Sf5vitQhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4dgtHw-uAxYhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6eZ7CyMYDLM
>>130719454>My impression of him is that he doesn't work well in a group, because he wants to be in the spotlight all the time.Yeah if you watch any interview with him where it's just him and the interviewer you will notice that he is a lot more easygoing.>But he's a businessman and knew that he'd get more spotlight beside Paul. I think that's the reason he stuck around after the 70s but was still mostly absent from doing Kiss stuff other than the necessary tours. He was always a businessman first and foremost, which isn't actually a bad thing because that's a large reason why they became as big as they did.
NTA but since we're on this topic...Undertale/Deltarune is power metal. It's so obvious when you listen to the guitar covers of the various boss themes.
>>130723374Undertale (like the game that inspired it) is a smattering of various genres. Metal, rock, pop, jazz, techno, etc. Off of the top of my head the only song from Undertale I'd call metal is Megalovania.

>>130724401https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cRmES6IJk_oand this, helldivers is for children
>>130570416This is a fucking great record. Really heavy for 1981, too, and tied with Heavy Metal Ears by Picture for the first speed metal album. I did not expect something so forward-thinking to come from Venezuela, and it be one of the first metal albums from there.https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLnvo7_KXu1e0x2vaijr7_IeJxFWN4uc-g
>>130724401UNGA BUNGA!
>>130723513Hopes and Dreams and Save the world both have prominent chuggy electric guitar. (The former is even classified as symphonic metal on RYM, lol) Other songs have very fast drumming and bombastic leads that could totally sound like power metal if they were simply played on guitar, such as Asgore or Spear of Justice.Deltarune has two undeniably metal songs, Vs. Susie and Knock You Down. (The latter sounds pretty similar to Wasted by Def Leppard) Also a lot of songs in the same boat as Asgore, such as Chaos King, Attack of the killer Queen, Black Knife, Guardian, Spawn, etc.
>>130714820I'd add Shadowrun to progressive metsl
https://youtu.be/H2b7NhUgjWY?is=1N852gKzeDGLVMoc
>>130570416Consistently better than the first album, but outside of Evil and Woman I don't think there's anything essential here. Just good heavy rock. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QGLePoitimchttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=De0cjx80wc4https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pgFPN5HDw5o
>>130570416>this was released in 1977Incredible. I can really hear the Montrose and Foghat influence on them.
>>130733710yeah, mark reale sites ronnie montrose as an influence
>>130733746Not surprised. Overdrive SOUNDS like a Montrose song. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X-1GQ5jEuNw
>>130731986The riffs on this album make me want to drive a rideable lawnmower at 8 AM
>>130733965So it can't be 7:59 or 8:01, it has to be exactly 8:00?
>>130570372trad with just a hint of thrash ok?
>>130570372Anyone here like the band Couldron? (The one from Canada, not the British one)
>>130570416Been listening to picrel for years now, really fucking good prog album with Tate like vocals. I never saw it being discussed outside progarchives, rym or metallum which is kind of weird, it has everything to be considered a classic just like Spiral Architect's A Sceptic's Universe (but way better)
>>130740102In Ruin is their best imo but New Gods has a lot of great moments too. Their first couple albums are alright.
I’ve been trying to get my into Skull fist. I actually really like everything about there songs BUT the vocals. I’ve noticed that a lot of NWOTHM bands have weird, overly fruity vocals that just turn me off.
>>130740442Nigger that's literally the best part about the music

>>130740102Pretty sure I've listened to some of their stuff. Don't remember it though.

>>130570416Highly underrated speed. Starts off as nothing too special, but around the halfway point it rapidly picks up and does not stop until the end. There's some lead-playing here that really reminds me of ADX's first record and Agent Steel. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FZIDt8vXhwg
