Word on the street is Sinatra is getting dumped by Columbia. He's finished.
>>130590887yeah all the girls are jumping on Eddie Fisher now. he was good seven years ago but all things must come to an end as they said.
Son, if I catch you listening to that POC radio station again I'm gonna drag you down to the nearest recruiting station and ship your behind off to Korea where you'll learn some discipline.

>>130591098fortunately he didn't let Mitch Miller be involved with his music, although CBS retaliated by refusing to promote or release it half the time
As Peggy Lee once said, it's a good day for shinin' your shoes and a good day for losin' the blues amirite?

>>130591798this was a revival of a 1920s tune. the originals were slow ballads. btw this record exhibits a popular 52-53 fad which was animal noises in songs.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?reload=9&v=rXMYqeJuxpUTeresa leaves London for Decca/Coral this year and here pairs up with mediocre wannabe crooner Don Cornell for this novelty excrescence. This is painful. This is 2:37 of auditory torment that will erase any doubt as to why white kids in this era began discovering black music instead.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NvHt3jSrAkUThe Four Aces blow up this year and will rule the charts for the next four and record many tunes that would become standards.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1edCV4dpFW8The Four Freshmen also break out in '52 although they would be more of an album than an singles act.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1edCV4dpFW8Black group that here records an answer of sorts to the Four Aces' breakout hit from '51 (and will have their biggest hit in '54). They were pretty old-fashioned and sounded like the Mills Brothers rather than the Dominoes or anything like that, but they were also on Capitol, not an R&B label.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EFhGXSopN-EThe Orioles were kind of the daddy of all R&B groups although their heyday was short-lived because three members were killed/injured in a 1950 car accident. However their most famous crossover hit would come in '53.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yr6Djj7MtMQ
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EaMRmM46JOMGiving EMM her first hits in six years (well some of that was time off due to having kids)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fi9XFSKMaVQThe Mills Brothers, damn, they've been a recording act for 21 years now (technically 18 since there were three where they didn't record anything). This is their final appearance in the top 10.
>>130590867https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LUEmxU6qQb0Patti has six hits this year of which "I Went To Your Wedding" went to #1. This tune went to #9.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MFvnERLOKsMOk that's pretty dum. And it'll only take her another nine years to do anything on the charts.
>>130594522https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_GvnnOqZP8AWrong link. Yeah it's predictably another meta song about her former career.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CjDA8_g0AbUThe Four Lads' first hit, surprisingly this is not that bad compared to what's coming when they move from Okeh to the main Columbia label. They had been backing singers for Johnnie Ray that Uncle Mitch decided to spin off as their own act.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5_xYKFRmnlMEarly Chordettes when they were an album-only acapella group on Columbia. If more tasteful than their later hits, also blander.
>>130596551they had a lot of Southern-flavored tunes on here. idk why everyone loved romanticizing the South in media back then despite the place objectively sucking ass, and even more so in those days.
Johnnie Ray had an objectively awful-sounding voice, IDK what the appeal was.
>>130590817someday our grandkids will live in a world where indoor smoking is finally banned thank God

>>130600246You suck, Eddie. You really, really suck.
>>130601108Dinah Shore by this point is more of a TV star as her main hitmaking days had been in the 40s. She also left CBS shortly after Mitch Miller got there because she didn't want to sing his bullshit.
>>130601146When you hit 40 nobody cares about you anymore. Everyone only likes you when you are young because you are entertaining to them. That's the reality of being an entertainer. You are the product and when you are no longer wasting your life making dumb pop songs when you should be making a family, gaining skills and amassing wealth they will drop you cold.

>>130604521>KAY STARR: Side By Side and Fool Fool Foolas I said, it's unfortunate that her two #1 hits were also some of her worst songs when she had so many better ones like these
>>130604652Kay is somewhat underrated today because she was always a competent pro and didn't have a really awful 50s meme song like "How Much Is That Doggy In the Window" (a strange blot on Patti Page's usual professionally bland music) that stands out.
>>130604809whereas with Teresa Brewer nearly all of her songs are awful memes. my suspicion is she was popular for a while based on mostly the novelty of being the youngest major girl singer at the time and the first one born in the '30s and she held that title pretty much until the rise of Connie Francis near the end of the decade (technically Jaye P. Morgan was seven months younger though born in the same calendar year) and Jill Corey was born in '35 but never had major chart success.
>>130604965>and Jill Corey was born in '35 but never had major chart success. Most of Mitch Miller's projects totally bombed. Doris Day, Jo Stafford, and Rosemary Clooney predated his tenure at CBS and he didn't sign them. He did sign Guy Mitchell, Mindy Carson, the Four Lads, Johnnie Ray, Jill Corey, Tony Bennett, and Frankie Laine and of this group one was already an established star prior to joining CBS, another didn't let Miller be involved with his music, and the rest were memes that are almost totally forgotten today. On top of that he rejected the Everly Brothers and Connie Francis who became superstars on other labels. That shows how awful the guy's sense of judgement/taste actually was.
>>130604809Capitol seldom put out a bad record in the 50s, they had few meme housewife pop songs and generally seemed to avoid that particular audience in favor of more classy uptown listeners. That can be explained by the fact that unlike Decca, Columbia, RCA, and ABC they were a real independent label not attached to a media company, a fact that Frank Sinatra liked to play up.
