Dan Nigro seems to have taken the Lindsey Buckingham/Butch Vig approach to treating the studio as an instrument in itself, using lots of pitch shifted overdubbing, which requires a lot of precision musicians to lay down takes consecutively and precisely. He even uses the Lindsey Buckingham vocal trick where he overdubs his own voice onto a female singing voice and buries it into the mix to make the vocals have a richer sound. Buckingham very notoriously did this to Stevie Nick's voice on Fleetwood Mac albums which made her sound not like a goat. Nigro blends his voice a lot more into the mix, almost to the point he's barely perceptible. It's all very clever.
