>>
>>130621293

my nigga you say that shit and that is your list? lol. Bashees and Type O sold more on aesthetics than actual melodic / musical content...
Son I'm disappoint

>also nirvana that high
another style over substance band

>nirvana lower than soundgarden and alice
lol
what the fuck is going on with your list.
You think Goth Rock is great but also Grunge is what it looks to me. Both of those genres were about style, not melody first.
>>
btw Swans is hyper overrated i dont care if its or was /mu/ core
thats my only hot take every other take i got is reasonable
>>
>>130623895
I like Jarboe. Being an actual Swans completist is goofy.

that album in particular that appears there Filth is filth. I didn't like it. Sounded like shit.

t. I mostly listen to classical music, jazz fusion and prog rock.
>>
>>130623875
Alice in Chains is full melody
>>
>>130621978
I actually like pretty much every band in the list, they're all classics for a reason.
Silverchair and Third Eye Blind too, but they obviously pale compared to the really great bands of the era.
In my list, the D tier was more like C, and the C tier was a C+
>>
>>130623912
Well, that's pre-Jarboe Swans.
Kind of has a /fit/ aesthetic in a way. Gay men pumping iron.
>>
>>130620810
What the fuck is even alternative rock? A lot of these bands sound nothing alike.
>>
>>130623973
Rock past the 90s o algo
>>
>>130623973
>>130623999
I think it was a label that popped up for college radio stations. To actually give an "alternative" playlist of rock at the time. Then it just stuck by the 90s.
>>
>>130623973
Alternative is the evolution of Punk Rock, culturally and musically
>>
>>130623875
Is that you Billy Corgan? I know it's you!
>>
>>130624040
You mean when people decided to play with the same energy of punk rock but actually learn how to play their instruments?
>>
>>130624068
kinda but look how UK punk rock turned into post-punk and then Goth and C86 and then again Shoegaze, Britpop and Dream Pop. Mirrored in the US by Hardcore -> Post-Hardcore/Emo -> 90s Alt Rock and Metal. It's one evolutionary line. Alternative IS Punk, though bands like AiC are stretching it far
>>
>>130621589
Fall fans are so obnoxious
>>
>>130624068
That's postpunk specifically.
I disagree with evolution of punk. It could be just something not easily filed into mainstream rock. Like no wave or industrial or some early edm.

>>130623773
bad list

>/mu/tants have shit taste
oh the ironing
>>
>>130624119
The best description of industrial I've ever heard is that it is quasi-field music for the machine/factory age. It is definitely closer to EDM/techno than rock. People think industrial is rock because bands like NIN combined the two.
>>
>>130624185
There were postpunk or "alt rock" bands that blurred the lines there too, before NIN. Killing Joke and Big Black being the biggest.
>>
>>130624132
Go on then, what's your list then

And I've yet to see anyone give any actual criticism of bands they don't like not extoll the virtues of those they do (to be fair I didn't do this either). >>130623875 made an attempt but "goth rock is style over substance" is an incredibly retarded statement to make, especially when you attach a picture of Hailey Williams to your post
>>
>>130624920
goth rock is style over substance tho. They are not doing anything musically complex or "high art" they just played fucking new wave punk lol and dressed like its Halloween. Literally style over substance.
>>
>>130624049
I aint but I dont like Nirvana I think they are overrated af they were not good at playing Kurt sold because he was handsome
>>
>>130624973
Goth rock is extremely sonically distinct, though, you fucking retard. "it's just punk bro" as if you can't tell something like Bauhaus or Siouxsie apart from regular punk from around the same time near-instantly in most cases. You can say "goth is just post punk" but by that logic there are like 5 music genres because everything is "just x but y" if you cope hard enough
>>
>>130625019
this shit is just new wave with halloween aesthetics lol:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-TAlS7J9Ofk
>>
>>130625046
Compare that to Blondie or the Cars and it's night and day, and that's one of Siouxsie's distinctly less gothic songs. A better example would be something off of Join Hands or Juju.

You're also ignoring the blatant fact that both New Wave and Post-Punk (and by proxy Goth Rock) are all descended from Punk, so obviously they're gonna have similarities.
>>
>>130624973
alternative music always focuses on style and aesthetics. that's a not a bad thing. it's a youthful type of music. catchy songwriting is also a valid form of substance btw, an album like disintegration wouldn't improve with more complex playing or attempts of making high art.

nigga but music must be substance first otherwise it will sound generic or like shit, and you can only get away with generic sometimes, among normies it doesn't matter if what you are doing has no uniqueness normies have the memory span of a goldfish, higher skill ceiling doesnt matter much either only if you want to attract people that actually like music. Normies care about appearance more anyway. If you care about music as an art then absolutely substance is way more important than style.

if your job is to sell not the art then yeah i agree with you it wont matter much you can get away with style over substance.
