i don't think it's ''fresh'' per se but their songwriting was a lot better than people gave them credit for. bands like simple mind wish they could have written tunes as catchy as stupid horse. but as with all tranny acts they had to lose their way and go right back to square one eventually.
i will also give them credit for being better than jane remover.

If it’s not fresh what could you possibly recommend thats an evolution of it?
Nobody blended pop/punk and electronica like this album except underscores, which is far more spotty and ultimately worse overall
I wish this pop/punk/electronica would come back, its absolutely peak and the first unique sound I’ve heard in ages
A shame the grifters immediately latched on and ruined it

It’s shit like this that makes me think they were deliberately taken out and it wasn’t their own doing

what an ignorant statement
>>
I would like to understand exactly what it is that makes this album so good

Meaning, like, I also think it's good (most of the songs on it at least), but I wish I had a better grasp of music theory/composition/production to figure out what makes it tick

All I've managed to discern so far is it likely has something to do with Laura's more loose vocal and instrumental overdubbing over Dylan's more quantized DAW beats. And, obviously, just the fact of them putting the composition (with vocals as instrumentals) first, unlike 99.9% of other artists that try quirky electro-pop-punk aesthetics
>>
>>130652971
define "good". if what you mean is that you personally enjoy listening to it, I don't think there's any objective, rational reason why we like any music. obviously there has to be some cause, but I don't think we (presently) have access to that info. we can notice to a greater or lesser extent what happens to be compelling to us in a given song, but *why* that is is beyond our understanding.
>>
>>130651711
100gecs is just 2019s TNGHT with autotune, they were never fresh
https://youtu.be/3-kjLzAIYAY
>>
>>130653419
thats such a reductionist and ignorant pov to approach anything with, they were just making songs and having fun - TNGHT probably happened the same way, a lot of music did. All the labels like fresh, blend of X and Y or unique masterpiece are meaningless, you all are just saying shit, words words words words words words
>>
>>130653419
Doesn't sound anything like the gecs
>>
>>130652987
Disagree. I think "good/bad" is mostly objective in art, and in music it's particularly objective: I'd say it's like 70% objective 30% subjective. As for "preference", that is more subjective. But I think your take is all wrong. A lot of people could acknowledge that 100 gecs is objectively good and yet not personally like it, and some may (incorrectly) do the reverse
>>
>>130654063
then by all means, preferences aside, please define - not necessarily give an example, thought feel free if you think it helps - what good music is. what is necessarily true about all instances of good music?

it's good, landmark album, but IMO of all the hyperpop from that time it feels like the one that is MOST of-its-little-moment in time. SOPHIE, ARCA, & Katie Dey transcend time, & are less goofy, although that's not a flaw in gecs so much as it's just its personality. it makes stuff like Oil of Every Pearl's Un-Insides feel more like a magnum opus that will be remembered as a crowning artistic achievement of our time for generations, like Dark Side of the Moon or whatever, though.

you just dont get it, believe me. Oil of is a brilliant concept album but 1000 gecs is a miracle, its just too dense, too packed with ideas sounds images thoughts and new, Oil of is very restrained and calculated in comparison - and sticking to the concept. I know this is bait, but the real answer here is that while MTDE has interesting parts, it's very repetitive. "I can only put so much in a song" is especially true when you are an outsider artist who doesn't know what you're doing. It just doesn't compare to how just about every song in 1000 gecs has multiple clever production twists packed in like a minute each. You can't in good faith listen to both and like MTDE better even if it deserves some credit for being first.
>>130651457
This is also true. The Skrillex collab was great, but that's been about it. They became popular with people that wanted to laugh at them rather than with them, then watered down their sound to cater to the newfound audience, losing both the earnest and ironic listener interest in the process.
>>
>>130657983
>I simply made factual assertions. You're repeating the same incorrect statement needlessly, which is textbook cloud screaming.
Words handled masterfully right there!
>>
>>130654063
i don't mean any offense by this but this take does make you look like you're really young or just haven't experienced that much music, jsyk.
at a certain point in your life you're going to like things that other people think are bad, and you're going to dislike things that people think are good. You're also going to find beauty that others don't notice in something that normally isn't to your taste. The only way to explain any of this is that music is subjective. It simply exists, and your development of taste might allow you to access it.
If you ever end up going through a phase of experimental, abstract, or outsider type music, it'll make it really clear that there are a ton of different ways to approach something, and whether something is good or bad is entirely up to a person's capacity to find the right angle.
so yeah idk say/think whatever you want, that's fair, but when you drop a take like this it's just a discussion ender

it’s interesting how zoomers have co-opted milennial internet culture aesthetics. like, you’ll see a kid bumping skrillex and 3oh!3 and actually deluding themselves into believing they had some hand in this subculture. makes me realize just how fractured culture is now. kids are gonna be clinging onto ghosts of ghosts of subcultures given a couple decades

but yeah, gecs is milennial by definition. hypothetically, their music registers the most to those who actually lived through all those nightcore brostep trends in real time. fanbase is a different story.
>>
I saw them live around this time and I must say it was really good. The guy is mostly lip syncing I think but its par for the course when the vocals are so fried in production.

Hand crushed by a mallet is really really good. I like 757 and other tunes they made. I hate their later stuff like fritos for cheetos or whartever its called. Too weird ska.

The stuff like money machine, hand crushed by a malelt and such was lightning in a bottle though.
