What’s /mu/s thoughts on cover songs? What are some of the best covers out there?
>>
In Brazilian music culture, big artists often make covers of other big artists, and many cover versions are better than the original recordings. Great example are the songs of Chico Buarque. Most of them, at least for me, aren't that good to listen to in their original version, but coming from other artists like the singer Pitty, they seem more enjoyable. SO, that my conclusion. Cover music can be good, even better than the original.

Oh and how could I forget,
>My Way - Sid Vicious

Only worthwhile if the artist can put their own spin on it and make it fit their persona/genre. Tainted Love - Gloria Jones/Soft Cell is a classic example, same song with two totally different vibes.

Covers are great. People played covers for thousands of years before recorded music. That was the only way music got preserved. Some people wrote their own songs, some of those were covered by others, most were forgotten. It's only in the last century that the idea of a cover is even a thing. Suddenly you could make some noise, slam it down on some wax, and shout "That's mine! I did that!". And all of a sudden everybody thought they had to be a unique special flower. Music's a conversation, not a soliloquy.

It's embarrassing if a band's biggest song is a cover. That's all

Johnny Cash's cover of Hurt is the worst song ever made in all of humanity. Inauthentic piece of shit. What would he even know about drugs? He took pills for like 2 years in the late 60s and then got sober.

That's the western popular music biz before the WW2.
In Tin Pan Alley times, nobody cared who did the first recording. The songs were published as sheet music, and the composers even toured just to play them on the piano and sell their song sheets.

Idk I'm not a Bauhaus guy, I only know that cover because I just really like Ziggy Stardust. I should really become a Bauhaus guy though

One of the most saccharine and pathetic covers in history. The video is even worse. Immediately outs anyone who likes it as a tastelet faggot
