This would've been the greatest album of the 21st century if it was properly finished
>>130657508The only artist still worth getting hype over
>>130657508Bought the vinyl to make up for downloading it when it first leaked, still goes incredibly hard. Jai one of the bredrins for sure
>>130657508He should release a finished version one of these days. I mean, the demos leaked 13 years ago, he might as well just embrace it at this point. I honestly believe it would still make a splash today, since it still sounds fresh and everyone is curious to hear how it was originally intended to sound. Too bad he's a fucking reclusive.
>>130657508counterpoint: no it wouldn't have
So what is this guy's deal?
>>130659116He's a UK based art pop dude who got his demos leaked on the internet and became basically a living legend overnight, to this day it sounds like nothing else. He got signed to XL because of if but the theft of his music really messed him up and he retreated from the industry for a while, made his live debut at Coachella which I watched on a stream and it was truly excellent.
it was perfect as is. the release was worse than the leaks
>>130657537I have a special memory from that. There were only like, 3000 copies of the first run and when it went up you had to navigate his retarded website with a 3D UI and point-and-click movement. You had to FIND the individual merch items in this stupid fucking 3D desert before you could even purchase them. It was torturous, though I did get one. Not long after, the whole site crashed from heavy traffic and they dropped the remainder of the stock on a different, non-bullshit site. I hate this man and his mysterious bullshit but his music was good enough to suffer for a little
>>130657508>he still believes the “leak” storyLmao you fell for his publicity stunt
Dude is a stinky jeet from the looks of it, I’m good
>>130660012>publicity stuntThe dude made no money from the intial leak and quit music for 6 years. He’s still only released 2 tracks since then. What would be the point of publicity?
>>130659734Yea I remember the janky website. The real joke is you can find pressings for bait ones literally everywhere now for cheap
Not even the best Indian artist. Peter Cat Recording Co. mogs.
>>130657508>SAAARRFuck off, go poo on the street or something
I miss p4k r&b. Who even remembers this guy today?
>>130657508it is somewhat interesting the BTSTU is like 20 years old but still sounds fresh
>>130661508Like fresh poop
>>130657508I’m still so fucking salty about this
>>130661508The whole album sounds like it came out of an alternative timeline in pop music. Still to this day I have no idea how he gets his mixes to sound like that, the album has such an idiosyncratic production style. Textures slicing in and out of the stereo field, inimitable vocal processing, arps that are totally unhinged and yet intensely satisfying.. there really is no one like him.
I don't remember a single note from this
>>130659641The 2019 release isn't the finished version
>>130660166>>130661214He was born in UK, retards
>>130659641Do you mean you have a problem with the marketing, or the album itself? They’re literally identical in terms of sound
>>130661967>the UK doesnt have like 300k PajeetsSAAAAAAAAAAAAR DO NOT REDEEEM THE UUUWNITED KINGDOOOM SAAAAAR!
>>130659093I got so much hype about how fresh and unlike anything else these tracks were, but they sounded exactly like a product of it's time. It's anco + all the DIY beat producers that popped off in like 2011/12 with a touch of RnB. They're fun tracks but I still don't really get what was hyping everybody up so much
>>130657508who?
>>130657508big in da game big in da gameyou can still like the tunes even though somebody told you they're unfinished, he was obviously doing a pseudo performance art bid for authenticity or something but it all sounded complete and cohesive enoughi was playing the hell out of a leak w/ no track titles ca. 2013, normie girls all liked it
>>130662020>that popped off in like 2011/12Produced between 2007 and 2009 so yeah, objectively ahead of its timeanco lol
>>130662006Lol Jai, his brother and his parents have more money than your entire bloodline put together
>>130662020>ancoI think you might need your ears checked. At most you could say this sounds ever so slightly like MPP, but that’s only because they are both pop records at their core. >a touch of RnBAre you avin a laff m8? It’s ALL RnB. Jai has far more in common with Prince than the literally who “DIY beat producers” you’re talking about.
>>130662101>The album, which mostly consists of unfinished songs and demos recorded between 2007 and 2013maybe, depends on what was done when. If it was 07-09 for all that insano compressed sidechaining and ducking stuff happening then yeah that's for sure ahead of it's time, and I guess unfortunate that he didn't get to show it off until that stuff was already being done elsewhere. I guess Justice - Cross came out in 07 and it's not too dissimilar in those sensibilities >anco lolmaybe you didn't like anco back then but it's undeniable here imo. That kind of wacked out psych pop with a million things going on was entirely their bag. They were also a huge part of the inspo that led to "chillwave" which is when all the indieheads learned what side-chain compression was, and that stuff was running parallel to the growth of all those DIY beat producers in 11/12. /mu/ nowadays likes to hate on anco but their presence/inspiration got it's teeth in everything back then
>>130662094>he was obviously doing a pseudo performance art bid for authenticity or somethingWhy do this and then drop off the map for 6 years? It’s insane to me that people still believe this nonsense. Two people were arrested.
>>130662159>Jai has far more in common with Prince than the literally who “DIY beat producers” you’re talking about.Saying Prince is crazy lol. The vox are RnB vibes but I'm talking about what was supposed to be so forward-pushing about these tracks, and that's the production. The RnB vox were a sprinkle on top of all that, "a touch of RnB".>At most you could say this sounds ever so slightly like MPP, but that’s only because they are both pop records at their core. People often say that Kid A pulled a lot from Aphex Twin. I would say that's undeniable, but that doesn't mean Kid A /sounds/ like Aphex Twin. This is what I mean here, as I said in my previous reply>That kind of wacked out psych pop with a million things going on was entirely their bag.I wouldn't mistake any of these Jai Paul tracks for an anco track, but if you were paying attention to anco back then, this incredibly busy psychedelic indie pop thing wasn't anything too new
Jai Paul sounds nothing like AnCo. You people man I swear
>>130662221>what was supposed to be so forward-pushing about these tracks, and that's the productionPrince is the best comparison because he self-produced the vast majority of his discography and gave RnB all these (at that point in time) new production techniques to play with. I’d say Jai Paul did the exact same thing for contemporary RnB. They also both have a broad palette of influences, which is why I can understand why you would think other genres take precedent over RnB. But the only other one that makes sense to me is pop music, of which RnB is for the most part a subgenre anyway.
>>130662277ah yeah, I see it now, that's a good point. The RnB elements always seemed secondary to me but if I focus on him bringing some RnB vibes to this kinda wacky pop stuff then yeah, he's pretty singular and OG for that as far as I can remember. I should try listening to it again with that in mind>>130662248idk if you didn't understand what I meant from my most recent post then idk what to tell you.>I wouldn't mistake any of these Jai Paul tracks for an anco track, but if you were paying attention to anco back then, this incredibly busy psychedelic indie pop thing wasn't anything too newif we're just talking about how "new" Jai felt at the time, it wasn't entirely out of left-field
>>130659139he was already signed to XL before the leak and already had released two singles with them when the leak happened: a remaster of BTSTU and Jasminebut yeah, still a fucking shame what happened to him
>>130657508def one of the 'albums' where you gotta just play and forget about it instead of judging by individual tracks. Flows a hella better. When I first checked it out, i thought it was boring as fuck
>>130657508What fascinates me about the leak itself is how well it flows, how it feels intentionally put together, but it was actually just 50 seconds MySpace demos and unfinished leaks randomly selected by the mysterious leaker. When it leaked people actually thought it was real, including music publications who helped spread the word. It's a tragic story but I can't help but find it intriguing. I'm just a sucker for bootlegs and demos I suppose
>>130657508>be Jai Paul>have amazing demo's>they leak and he disappears for 20 years>he comes back and releases a totally enshittified version of the leaked album, including modern day clinical EDM retard slop mixingliterally why. possibly greatest disappointment in music i've ever experienced
just jumped around the record, was mostly impressed by BTSTU and the mumbai track, the formers hook was definitely the type of shit I don't think we'll ever get something more "futuristic"
>>130663242Those and Jasmine are basically the only finished tracks. It's a weird artifact, however, as many have pointed out. The incompleteness of the album somehow grows on you and it feels intentional. Tracks that should be no more than mere snippets feel like they're in their right place. Jai Paul himself, in his letter that accompanied the 2019 version (which I think everyone should read) says that the music is presented in a way that he would never release. But, somehow, people grew to like it. It's almost as if there are two Jai Pauls: the one who finished his tracks, gave the world BTSTU and Jasmine, presented his music in a certain fashion; and the other Jai, the one from the leak, whose music is presented in a completely different way, not intended by the artist, but is surprisingly effective and likeable. It's weird and definitely an acquired taste, so I'd recommend giving it another spin!
>>130657508Yeah another thing were that the ps2 rock band guitar hero algorithm were already always over to some ways about thinking and narration which were part to the idea to the fragment untitled or something like that part to that were that whatever the recorder records were some historical record about electronic and cybernetic conditions and dimensional planes arguably
>>130657508he's like MIA's lost cousin
>>130657508Is that ronaldo
>>130657508Its still great, makes me sad to think what it couldve been desu if he had continued making music
>>130657508Did you all like Zion Wolf? I always loved that one
>>130661508Idk if this is bait or if you think browns and whites born in the same country are the same race
>>130666368I love every track except "Raw"
>>130666368Really clever how it messes with conventional reggae tropes. You expect the guitar to hit consistently on the offbeat, but instead it’s kinda dragging behind the beat and almost turns into a dilla rhythm. It’s not my favourite track of his but still so inspired
>>130661978The release version had samples removed and some changes in mixing, probably because of licensing issues since he sampled Harry Potter so much. It's the most blatantly obvious on Baby Beats and Good Time, with Jewel just missing entirely.
>>130666368Damn that syncopated rhythm is uniqueEven today after 13 years this sounds unlike anything and still freshIt's weird that despite how good this is it doesn't seem to have had any impactThis had the potential to become pop's NevermindIt's like pop done perfectly, because it's glitched, raw, pure feeling
>>130659734That's honestly hilarious. More artists should torture their fans like that.
>>130662110typical pathetic Indian retort. 'bloodlines' and money.everyone hates you and you cunts are all just pissy because the local white women think you're dirty cunts too. sucked in, fuckhead.
>>130662972I was really into Jai just straight off the back of BTSTU, I membah a friend being the first of everyone to get a car and he had this fucked up old convertible Land Cruiser and McDonalds did $1 cheesburgers. We used to drive down and flog that song and get 20 each and Robin Hood it and give half of them away and charge $2 to fag hags and the kids who used to stick their tongues into hose pipes for fun. When the leak came out I remember genuinely not believing it for weeks, it became a bit of a genuine hit in my year 10 cohort amongst even normies. It hit on the R&B that was popular but had this light heartedness and fun to it that really wins you over as a teenager.Quite a few years ago now, I was 'working' in 'music journalism' and met up with a few people from the magazine when I was overseas and on holiday. They told me the story of how it apparently leaked but I can never quite remember it because I was having a fuckin crackin holiday. They genuinely believed XL did it intentionally to drive hype in their general catalogue and profile (around this time they really got into more acts with 'more potential' – and purchased the Radiohead catalogue) or it was an intern. Interns have been responsible for so much music trickling out. Those OK Computer tapes would've never come out if it wasn't for one...
>>130667877Man I guess it’s been so long I’d forgotten what the original leak even sounded like. Anyone know where to find it?
>>130670930NTA but it's hilarious bong not realizing how much they have in common with indians. Like, you both have horrible breaths, you are both ugly as shit, you both are ill-mannered.Please, no more brother wars.
>>130671301>Dragon quest algorithm detected >
>>130657508Anyone have recs for ANYTHING that sounds like this?
>>130672592Wild Nothing strangely enough and I'm sure some indie album from the 2000s that I cant think of Mk.geeClarence Clarity George ClantonJanet Jackson for other R&B artists I guess The Velvet Rope
>>130673007+1 for George Clanton I never see that dude discussed on here. Vaporwave/ hypnagogic legend
>>130673017Well you answered your own question. I guess you could say Vaporwave
>>130659139So he made a demo and then left because he didn't know how to finish it or where to go from there. Sounds like internet myth outsider music kind of stories like what they did with Daniel Johnston back in the day or Neutral Milk even though Jeff Mangum isn't an outsider
What about Frank Ocean? They both have that unfinished R&B kind of music and both just all of sudden disappeared
>>130657508it's finished though save for good time which sounds great but is like 10 seconds long
>>130672592Jai produced Fabiana Paladino’s debut album that came out last year. Definitely not as out-there or interesting as Bait Ones, but not bad. Also, worth checking out any of the other Paul Institute -adjacent artists.
i remember coming onto this with my friends in college too and blasting it in the car. good times.this is a based thread. the enthusiasm in these posts is cutting nicely through the blanket cynicism and spite i've come to expect from this website
Great record. Not really as mind blowing as the leaks from back in the day but still one of the best of the 2010s. Has a funk to it that his contemporaries never really touched. “All night” makes me nostalgic. Come back JP
>>130676610>>130676807kys pajeets
>>130677077You’re a faggot lol eat shit
>>130677348SAAAAAAAR DO NOT REDEEM THE ALBUM
