The whole album sounds like it came out of an alternative timeline in pop music. Still to this day I have no idea how he gets his mixes to sound like that, the album has such an idiosyncratic production style. Textures slicing in and out of the stereo field, inimitable vocal processing, arps that are totally unhinged and yet intensely satisfying.. there really is no one like him.

People often say that Kid A pulled a lot from Aphex Twin. I would say that's undeniable, but that doesn't mean Kid A /sounds/ like Aphex Twin. This is what I mean here, as I said in my previous reply

Prince is the best comparison because he self-produced the vast majority of his discography and gave RnB all these (at that point in time) new production techniques to play with. I’d say Jai Paul did the exact same thing for contemporary RnB. They also both have a broad palette of influences, which is why I can understand why you would think other genres take precedent over RnB. But the only other one that makes sense to me is pop music, of which RnB is for the most part a subgenre anyway.

What fascinates me about the leak itself is how well it flows, how it feels intentionally put together, but it was actually just 50 seconds MySpace demos and unfinished leaks randomly selected by the mysterious leaker.
When it leaked people actually thought it was real, including music publications who helped spread the word.
It's a tragic story but I can't help but find it intriguing. I'm just a sucker for bootlegs and demos I suppose

It's a weird artifact, however, as many have pointed out. The incompleteness of the album somehow grows on you and it feels intentional. Tracks that should be no more than mere snippets feel like they're in their right place.
Jai Paul himself, in his letter that accompanied the 2019 version (which I think everyone should read) says that the music is presented in a way that he would never release. But, somehow, people grew to like it. It's almost as if there are two Jai Pauls: the one who finished his tracks, gave the world BTSTU and Jasmine, presented his music in a certain fashion; and the other Jai, the one from the leak, whose music is presented in a completely different way, not intended by the artist, but is surprisingly effective and likeable.
It's weird and definitely an acquired taste, so I'd recommend giving it another spin!

I was really into Jai just straight off the back of BTSTU, I membah a friend being the first of everyone to get a car and he had this fucked up old convertible Land Cruiser and McDonalds did $1 cheesburgers. We used to drive down and flog that song and get 20 each and Robin Hood it and give half of them away and charge $2 to fag hags and the kids who used to stick their tongues into hose pipes for fun.

When the leak came out I remember genuinely not believing it for weeks, it became a bit of a genuine hit in my year 10 cohort amongst even normies. It hit on the R&B that was popular but had this light heartedness and fun to it that really wins you over as a teenager.

Quite a few years ago now, I was 'working' in 'music journalism' and met up with a few people from the magazine when I was overseas and on holiday. They told me the story of how it apparently leaked but I can never quite remember it because I was having a fuckin crackin holiday.

They genuinely believed XL did it intentionally to drive hype in their general catalogue and profile (around this time they really got into more acts with 'more potential' – and purchased the Radiohead catalogue) or it was an intern. Interns have been responsible for so much music trickling out. Those OK Computer tapes would've never come out if it wasn't for one...

Jai produced Fabiana Paladino’s debut album that came out last year. Definitely not as out-there or interesting as Bait Ones, but not bad. Also, worth checking out any of the other Paul Institute -adjacent artists.
