The last of the Beverley Sisters has died. In reality, they were the Chinery sisters, but that was not considered marketable enough by their labels. >>130668463This is just Britain's Andrews Sisters right?
man, the UK was pants musically until the 60s
>>130668463They looked cuter in the thumbnail tbqh.
>>130668493Age-wise closer to the McGuire Sisters or Chordettes. But like all such acts, Andrews Sisters inspired clearly.
>>130668509Watch the OP video, damn straight they're an AS rip.
>>130668595the Andrews Sisters were basically a comedy act. some of their copycats like the McGuire Sisters missed the humor bit though.
>>130668463tbqh i wasn't expecting anyone from that era of pop music to still have been alive in 2026. they were older than Patti Page by about six months and she died 13 years ago.
>>130668555The Chordettes were not a sister act, though these kind of groups were more common when people had large families.
>>130668555Where do the The Fontane Sisters and The DeCastro Sisters and The DeJohn Sisters and The Lennon Sisters fit into all this?
>>130668801>Where do the The Fontane Sistersstarted as kind of AS clones, but didn't have any funny songs or even hits until signing with Dot.>The DeCastro Sisters and The DeJohn Sistersmomentary flashes in the pan, the former's one hit became a standard recorded by lots of people.>The Lennon Sistersbad. like Pat Boone, an intentional wholesomarino act for Mormons and assorted Christian fundie types. also affiliated with Lawrence Welk. somehow all of them are still living.
>>130668509This is kind of catchy:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vTYQPr3lfrs
The progenitor of all such groups was the Boswell Sisters, who were really America's first pop stars in a sense and also rich bitches from a wealthy Southern family proving trust fund kids always existed. Connee Boswell was able to make a successful solo career after they disbanded.
>>130668860the Fontane Sisters were originally supposed to be the two older ones plus their brother, but he was killed in WW2 and they recruited their younger sister Gerri who had intended to become a nurse to replace him. they released one disc on Musicraft in 1946 before signing with RCA a few years later, but were mostly known as Perry Como's backing girls and had no hits of their own until signing with Dot in the mid-50s and having success with a string of R&B covers. by the time they had success in 1955 they were already pretty old, they were born in 1915, '18, and '21 and didn't stay on top more than two years once they got there.
>>130668860yeah that. most of their wannabees missed the humor bit, only the Chordettes had that and they weren't a sister act as he said.
>>130668622Steve Hoffman mentioned about a phone conversation he had with Patti Andrews in the early 80s concerning song royalties she was owed and never got. He said she was a nice lady and was pleasantly surprised that anyone still remembered her by that time.
>>130668463Chinery is a Norman surname suggesting they were of noble blood.
>>130668860Humor is a hard thing to pull off in music, a fun song and a funny one aren't one and the same.
>>130668493thats what I was thinking the whole time
>>130668463I am 115 years old and the Beverly sisters were my generations banarama.
>>130668652Mamie Van Doren is still around.
>>130670665Bananarama weren't exactly "funny" though.
>>130671426Helen Merrill, though she wasn't pop.
>>130671426actress, not a singer
>>130668463prob wouldn't, would, would
>>130673003Jaye P. Morgan is still alive and was born the same year as Van Doren, so...
>>130673022the middle one looks like a dude
>>130669748that is correct. the Fontane and McGuire Sisters had songs that were fun, but i wouldn't call them funny.
>>130668463Only the right is somewhat cute.
>>130668463wonder which one got the most cock
Only their recording of "Greensleeves" in 1956 made the US charts. British pop was generally assumed to be incompatible with American tastes pre-Beatles.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=speZViy6PPg
>>130675080that never really changed, the British groups that got big in the US tended to not be the same ones that were big in the UK. guys like Clapton or the Stones were Ameriboos who mostly made music for American audiences.
>They entered the Guinness World Records in 2002, as the world's longest surviving vocal group without a change in the original line up.[9]
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ECvOG9IhB_8Petula Clark's first record released in the US (1953), it attracted no attention.
>>130675207>all that florid classical mushAmerican music of the period sounded more...dynamic, even orchestral-driven tunes like this had a rhythmic sense that PC tune totally lacks.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LLtODFQ_R5k
>>130675049They all married assorted rich Chads.https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Beverley_Sisters#Personal_lives_and_honours
>>130673003She had a recording career. It wasn't that successful, but she was indeed a singer:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CfW50IGBcdIhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C1YvkZ0Go5M
>>130676036Julie London she wasn't. More like Gale Storm.
>>130676086https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BQpA0wu4fZQGale Storm...ugh. Maybe if it was on Capitol she would have had a shot but not on Dot.
>>130676159>Gale Storm was born Josephine Cottle on April 5, 1922Honey, you're like 34 here and singing about teenager agony.
>>130676185it worked for Taylor Swift didn't it?
>>130676159Capitol wouldn't have signed someone with that weak of a voice. Nobody except Dot was going to have her.
>>130676159Van Doren recorded for both and other labels too. She was a limited singer, although the Billy Vaughn arrangement is pretty good as his usually were.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kigyVtEi9FI
>>130676404as i said, Dot was a bit of a troll label, they signed some real oddballs, has-beens, and people who couldn't sing.
>>130668939I downvote this one.
>>130668463>>130668939Rather less Andrews Sisters with time but then it was almost 20 years between the two videos.
>>130670665They're not like Bananarama at all.
