Not my favourite music ever out of my personal collection, but it was stylish and fun and had good melodies and an interesting new twist on existing sounds and aesthetics. Those first two albums are quite special to the last days of the carefree 00s indie zeitgeist as the shit from the recession was kicking in and I knew at the time this and those first two MGMT albums would be looked upon fondly in future. Yeah they're huge nepos, but that's been true of plenty worse bands than this. Most of their recent stuff stinks though.

Chris Ott has a whole video talking about how he likes Vampire Weekend because one of the guys from the band had a tape trading blog that introduced him to highlife music from Ghana

How come them and Paul Simon got away with such blatant cultural appropriation?

The late '00s and early '10s had such globalization "we are one" culture it's crazy. It bled through in the increasing influence of world music on pop culture, Vampire Weekend a smaller scale example of this.

I only get upset about rich kid bands when they try to pretend theyre not rich kids. As far as I can tell vampire weekend dont try to do this. They just got together and made a band making goofy indie pop that is quite vulnerable

I hate bands like black country new road where they're all rich kids trying to be punk and avante garde by pushing boundaries and sniffing coke while they probably sit in some shithole pub clicking their fingers to a guy farting into a trombone and saying stuff like "Tarquin you got to sign this guy to ar band yah, Imagine him playing a 2-5-1 in c sharp over hugo burping the alphabet backwards. We would be so working class looking"

/mu/ had highlife and afrorock threads pretty frequently back when people on this board still listened to music. Missing out on a huge amount of killer albums by being a pleb
