>Facing increasing psychological issues after separating from Ferrer a second time, her career in decline as was the case for most singers of her generation, and addicted to prescription pills, Clooney was in the Ambassador Hotel on June 4, 1968, not far from where her friend Robert Kennedy, whom she had campaigned for, was assassinated. A few weeks later, the veteran singer was giving a performance in Las Vegas when she suffered a mental breakdown onstage and began shouting obscenities at the audience. Clooney was committed to mental health care for the next several years.[3]

rock was still such a new thing in '68 that record labels hadn't yet figured out how to move away from the old business model where singers were interpreters so you could have them crank out assembly line albums ala Sinatra or Steve Lawrence. this didn't work when the band wrote their own material and lacked the ability to fill out three albums a year. i think by the early 70s they had mostly gotten things down to a relatively ironed out one LP a year.
