Is there anything more NPC than all your “favourite” music coming from the RYM top charts?
>>130698211https://youtu.be/2GyqKDiiiD0
Yeah your favorite album not being bold on rym. then you have shitty npc taste.
>>130698265Bolded IS NPC shit, nigger
>>130698281There’s 7500 bolded albums, so the majority of the canon. What’s your favorite album?
>>130698211it's just statistically very likely, but honestlydiscovering music from charts >discovering music from the algorithm(s) >discovering music from RYM charts >discovering music from forum recommendations >discovering music from genre/scene associations >discovering music from label associations >discovering music from releases (blindly)
>>130698265If you need the hive mind to approve of your taste, you’re not capable of independent thinking
>>130698290Higher than those, discovering music from seeing live performances (for example I saw Dillinger Escape Plan at a festival long ago), even having your friends recommend music to you is far better than looking for popular consensus to form your ideas of good and bad
>>130698310I'd put discovering music from live performances on the same tier as either scene or label associations, because that's what it really boils down to. From friends could be anything, it really depends on what your friends are like.
>>130698334Well anon it’s not like all the bands on the ticket back then were on the one label or anything, not sure what you’re getting at. The point is you’re forming thoughts from direct life experiences rather than through a filter group acceptance
>>130698350is the logical or too tough?
>>130698288There’s nothing wrong with music you like being on there, but I get this uncanny feeling when I see people all having the same opinion on acquired taste things like Swans, Death Grips, Have a Nice Life, Aphex Twin etc. At least with normies it’s understandable that they would just listen to generic pop and country, because it’s made for an undiscerning public. These NPCs like Fantano really just make my skin crawl
Anything below a 3.3 I ignore.
>>130698424Peak sits at 3.18 though
>>130698409Feel the same way. I really struggle to believe that these people have a conscious experience of music.
>>130698265most good popular music is bold on rym. taste isn't 100% subjective
>>130698439>>130698281
>>130698439With music it’s probably a lot more subjective than you think. For example TPAB is a highly rated album, but you can’t state it is factually better than the Attack of the Clones soundtrack. If you’re actually being objective you’d probably have to assign higher value to a recording of The Planets for example, where objectively more skill and execution was required to make it.
>>130698211noit's the sign of someone without a soul
>>130698211Out of my all-time top 50 albums, only 5 are in the top 100, and 19 in the top 500. Out of my all-time top 10, only 6 in the top 500...
>>130698439There is a lot of very good music that is rated very low on rym, the kind of people that create accounts on rym are representative of a particular breed of pretentious "indie"/"avant-guarde" slop enjoyers, try introducing Swans to the average person...
>>130699564Swans is the clearest example of online groupthink in that way. I happen to enjoy their music, but it’s so divisive you would expect a lower score. Just a lot of hollow pseuds don’t want to admit they don’t get it
>>130698211If you use RYM for any length of time, even to listen to the top chart albums, go get screened for autism.
one of my all-time top 20 favorite albums is rated 3.18 on rym...
>>130698211People whose favorite music comes from YouTube or Spotify algorithms
if you think the worth of art can be summed up in a simple numeric value I don't respect your opinion on it
>>130700615I agree but ratings can literally make or break a band that you like even if you like the music personally which is a shame
>>130698424You should be doing the opposite. Outside of the stuff that's already canonized as classic, RYMers have horrible taste.
>>130700615mehI rate your comment, 2 stars our of 5 (wouldn't upvote)
>>130700627I see these YouTube videos of people listing their favourite albums and it’s just so funny to me that it’s always>remain in Light>To be kind>Long season>the money store>Twin Fantasy>The glow pt 2>Selected ambient works>Kid A>What’s going onYou get the idea. It’s probably 18 year olds that want to be cool and Fantano types.
>>130699564give examples.
>>130698409>acquired taste things>Swans, Death Grips, Have a Nice Life, Aphex Twin
It rates most classics highly and is a bastion for good popular music, especially rock. It's also based for neglecting NPC types of Rock music such as Linkin Park. Never understood the ratings of Kid A, Swans, GYBE, Kendrick Lamar, Twin Fantasy, Long Season, Aphex Twin, Death Grips and Have A Nice Life though. These are all inflated
>>130698211Imagine using Dilate Your Music, ever.Go back tranny faggots. All fields.
>>130698211Timid little bloke, innit?
>>130703300I listened to all this garbage multiple times, they aren't "acquired taste" they're shit, just because it gets more tolerable after a while (as it happens to virtually all music) that doesn't make it good. >>130703221 >>130700571
>>130703303You're a moron, LP has been rising, Hybrid Theory is close to being bolded, while Meteora is ranked ~6500 and rising.
>>130707515yeah still not real rock music
>>130707468I get what you’re saying but acquired taste music is something I’ve experienced. Especially with Swans, at first I listened through a bunch of it and thought it was pretentious garbage, but for whatever reason came back to it months later and “got it”.

RYM is just a tool for most people like imdb, most go for info rather than to inform their taste. I don't see how you could complain about RYM heads unless you familiarize yourselves with them, which is easy not to do.Contrarian circle jerking
>>130709384Yeah RYM is a good way to catalog music if you ignore the shitty community
>>130709384To be honest there’s a similar thing happening with IMDb. I’ve had tons of conversations where people tell me things like shawshank redemption and the dark knight are the best movies ever made. Point is the internet has made things homogenous in a new way and NPCs are aligning with their tastes with online consensus
>>130709631Imdb community is still far less insufferable than letterboxd
>>130706891Ok cheers
