I was curious about Phish since I like a fair amount of progressive rock and enjoy the Grateful Dead. I mainly come from a punk/hardcore/grindcore background so this is new territory for me. What albums would you suggest i start with?I am a huge fan of Primus though, who they toured with in the past.
POSSUM
>>130698856>A Live One>New Years Eve 95>Slip Stitch Passif you like any of those then you can start digging deeper
eat this while u listen or ur a bitch
>>130698856>punk/hardcore/grindcore backgroundthe closest thing to this they have is "big black furry creature from mars" which is more or less a rare joke song>>130699044any of these are good starters, the "stash" from A Live One is always on perma rotation. None of those 3 really reach the depths they're capable of though, but they're good intros. Don't bother with studio stuff, it's pretty much pointless. This band is so divisive and none of the fans can agree on their best shit (more or less) so it's really hard to pick the right thing for someone, but I will say that when trying to get into them you can pretty much ignore the "song" parts. Look through a setlist, find the ones that are 15 mins or more, and start paying attention when they stop singing, usually like 3 mins in. These guys are god-tier at improvising specifically with each other, that's the reason they're such a phenomenon. Everything else is supplementary.Source: been my favorite band for 21 years, seen 80 something shows over the past 16 years. I'll post some jams in another reply
>>130699228no can do I have blood sugar issues.
>>130699322i'll give your blood (family) some sugar (semen) from my issues (penis)
>>130698856>What albums would you suggest i start with?Story of The ghostIt's a studio album recorded really well and some proggy/weirdness that could fit a Les Claypool fan vibehttps://youtu.be/kI0bCtaozP0stay out of the boathouse though
>>130699278Basically this. Well said. I’ve been on board since 2002. I remember burning Miami 03’ to multiple CD’s in my high school boarding room once we got the matrix patch from the SBD. Good times. Phish is still one of the greatest of all time. The scene will basically end once they’re gone.
>>130699278https://youtu.be/SEo4kjnPwgQ?t=7797@ timestamp, the "stash" from A Live One, but with videohttps://youtu.be/FHyKHWcpGyUexample of their 94 vibe, super discordant dissonant shit that changes pace constantlyhttps://youtu.be/9DUhX_x5GeUlegendary show - trey (guitar) finds this magic combo between feedback from his amp and his half-step whammy pedal setting, mega zenned out shithttps://youtu.be/Loqt0l3YKBQpersonal favorite, this shit is fucked up and it was thunderstorming during the show, whole crowd was freezing and miserablehttps://youtu.be/YVupHmTIfrwa more recent taste, they reach straight up harsh noise levels by the end of ithttps://youtu.be/FMRtxFFE7r0?t=6564@ timestamp, classic showhttps://youtu.be/BGfPebD6Q2omelt is the song they're always most likely to get experimental with, consistent face melter, obviously the best phish songwent a little too crazy with this but they're kinda rare to get mentioned here and if you're actually interested, I gotta try to hook it up
>>130698856Since you like punk / metal I'd suggest 2000-06-14, a great show that starts with a heavy Carini. The gang vocals are great.
An actual Phish thread that isn’t pure hate right out of the gate? Am I on 4 Chinz right now? Crazy. Long live the Phish from Vermont!
>>130699377hell yeah, started in 05 myself but I was 14 and they'd already broken up. Had to wait until 2010 to see my first show and I've pretty much consistently hit a run or 3 each year since. I saw 20 shows a couple years>The scene will basically end once they’re gone.it's funny because from my POV, I like the dead ok, I pretty much dislike every other jam band, but I've always been obsessed with Phish. It's easy for me to go to a random jam show and think everything is "missing the point", but it's genuinely how it seems to me. There will be plenty of bands/festivals where parts of the culture are kept alive, but yeah, once any member of Phish dies or quits it's fuckin over, and nobody outside of the people who tapped in when they were alive will understand. From an outside POV the whole jam scene looks pretty lame, but it all makes sense if you can actually lock into a Phish show on a good night and let them fuck you up IRL
>>130698856>I like a fair amount of progressive rockPhish is about the improv first and foremost, but if you like prog they have a handful of early songs with these long composed fugue-like sections that are super proggyhttps://youtu.be/nnoTnYaOLp8from like 2:18 - 6:00https://youtu.be/EUvr3ikWS2gpretty much this whole tunethere's a lot more like this too
>>130698856they covered VU loaded and are very faithful to the originals
>>130698856https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GCu_3hK4Xrc
>>130698856My Phish contribution is this incredible Bathtub Gin, their best song imo:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cIMdXdtKiqI
>>130698856idk if its worth it man. i had a dead phase and thought i would try going to a phish show a couple summers ago, left at the end before they came back for an encore...
>>130699918Gin is nowhere near my favorite hish tune, but I totally respect that pick as a favorite. The actual song part is so fun, the Rhapsody in Blue references, pages "drunk" keyboard part, Trey's big melody that leads into the jam, the whole things a romp, and a lot of legendary jams have been off Gins. The only reason I wouldn't put it high up for me, is that the jams are usually very one-dimensional. It's almost always just a build up > peak type 1 jam, but when they nail it a Gin peak can be so fucking sick. Last song of first set is the ideal spot for a Gin imo, and save early 2nd set for the real exploratory jam vehicles>>130700348could always just not be for you, but even the biggest Phish heads will tell you that dud shows do happen. Do you happen to remember which show it was?
>>130701938forgot to say, that GIn you posted is fucking sick. Those Sphere shows seem pretty serious from what I've heard. The Fuego (not even the "dark puddle" thing, just the Fuego jam itself) is easily the best Fuego I've ever heardhttps://youtu.be/HRAWDMkW_80not great quality but from like 5:00 - 18:30 is insane
>>130698856>I like a fair amount of progressive rockyou might like these guys- sorta proggy for a jam bandhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=59ywr9zKMBc
>>130698856Their first album, just like with any other artisthttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3_zvgj3c074
>>130699228Ever since they got sold to some conglomerate the quality has degraded and it tastes like shit now. Shame.
I only got into them a couple years ago but have been listening nearly every day and think I’m still scratching the surface. I only heard legendary jams like Providence Bowie, Nassau Tweezer, and Fukuoka Twist within the past month and since discovery they’ve been daily listens. Speaking of please tell me there’s more shows like Fukuoka set 2.
>>130706590>Speaking of please tell me there’s more shows like Fukuoka set 2.check out more of the japan 2000 tour. Fukuoka was special which is why it got released as a soundboard but part of the scenario that led to that sound was that they were playing really small rooms in japan. Feels like you could hear a pin drop during the jams which is very unlike the massive arena's they'd been playing in the US for years.maybe you'd like the amsterdam cities, superball simple, or try to dig up the old mp3 fan compilation called 'ambient 98'. 98 was their 'ambient' year. There's a few youtube comps too called 'sleeping with the phish' or something that compile a bunch of ambient jams, largely from 98
>>130706590Fukuoka is a Top 25 show of all time. It’s basically a perfect Phish show, in my opinion. It has everything I absolutely love about the band. Japan 2000 needs to be released as a boxset.
