If the 90s in America was an optimistic and prosperous time, why was grunge music so depressive? What did they have to be so miserable about?
>>130708967>"the economy was stable which means the average person was rich"retards need to stop saying this, and (you) need to stop making this thread
Because Seattle fucking blows.
late 80s early 90s there was a mild recession, yeah we beat the soviets, but then it was the end of history and we had no purpose in life. What was OUR purpose in life? to work in an office cubicle until we get old and die? This was the great theme of gen x coming of age stories from office space to fight club.Anyways, things dont get positive until the second half of the 90s, when we have the dot com boom, spice girls, electronica, etcthe 90s ended on September 11, 2001. then everything became grey, paranoid, and patriotic
Did you even listen to 80s music?Sure the mainstream one was full of fake poptimism and trannies in spandex doing "rock".But in the underground there was despair, noise, the youth was seeking something else. And this started to infiltrate in mainstream music too in the second part of the 80s if you think about Depeche. Then there was the whole lot of bleak postpunk and goth-themed music. The youth connected more with that vibe because they felt it was more authentic and in touch with their own struggles, than the fake mainstream shit that was being rammed down their throats by corporate suits. Why would they identify with the corporate bots? The youth seeks new icons, something genuine not fabricated bullshit that tries to persuade you you're actually doing great.People only get some degree of material wealth after their 30s, why do you think people in their 20s would be so cheerful about being adults but not having any say
>>130709059>to work in an office cubicle until we get old and die?Yeah I think I'd rather press keyboard keys all day than do manual labor
>>130709582Manual labor is great if you're not doing it as a job day after day, for decades until your body breaks down. But if you just do it for your own house or business, it's great.
>>130708967that optimism and prosperity is in hindsight because post 2000 has sucked so hardAlso these people were strung out on heroin
>>130708967>If the 90s in America was an optimistic and prosperous time...what the fuck gave you that idea? lol it wasn't.
>>130709059>we beat the sovietswut?is this really what they teach in burgerschools? beat at what?? and how?
>>130709648NTA but the Soviet Union fell and Russia was not considered a credible threat anymore. The Cold War ended, the USA "won". It's not that hard to understand
>>130708967Back in those times, what kept the west going was winning the cold war and for you personally was making it in the corporate world. So it wasn't a very promising life for someone with a more artistic disposition. In a way, this was similar to the 60s youth revolting against the buttoned-up culture of their parents. They weren't looking forward to joining the wagecuck lifestyle and hoping for a house and a car. They wanted enlightenment, they wanted to feel free and connected
>>130708967>>Durr, Roy Orbison sang a song about being lonely, so that must mean the economy was in depressionZoomer logic
>>130709615>Manual labor is great if you're not doing it as a job day after day, for decades until your body breaks downYou've clearly never interacted with enough Billy Bobs to understand their mentality. They believing having a missing eye or nonfunctional leg by 50 is a sign you lived life and are a real man's man.
>>130708967I don't feel depressed listening to Nirvana. Too much energy.
