music production general for talented musicians

been fiddling with any new plugins lately?

made something so bad it's hilarious? or even good? vocaroo it!
>>
>>130713997
Sadly I've been experimenting with the V.R cracked version of Serum 2 (latest version) and it crashes after a relatively short period of use. Very annoying.

>>
>>130714262
nice. could hear this in a video game with some polish. maybe needs some reverb on certain elements like the snare at certain points in the track.
what are some other "y2k" tracks like this? are you using any as reference? post them

>>130714399
reminds me a little bit of pilotredsun. the counter melody synth that comes in at 0:34 could possible do with another synth layer that maybe automates up and down in volume or automates a hi cut eq to match the energy of the song

>>
i spent like a hour trying to diagnose why a high hat with going super loud in ezdrummer 2 randomly. velocity was flat, no automation, just random pops up in volume. turns out it was because i have several midi items in the track (drum sections that i would copy and paste, v1, chorus 1, v2, etc). when i glued it all together to one item it went away. im so fucking retard so i just feel like i am home in this thread

further analysis, ezd2 does sound kind of round robin which on this preset triggers a loud sample for some unknown reason...rendering the track and getting lucky if the issue doesnt pop up during render seems to the solution
>>
>>130718006
some kind*
i dont know why i never noticed it maybe i dont use that specific (its some kind of open hh) sample much and this track is like crazy drums idk
>>
>>130718006
you can change whether round robin is used in ezd2 im sure. dont think you can select specific samples to use though.
pro tip: always bounce/flatten everything into audio because midi is unreliable
you can solo ezd2, solo each drum/perc and bounce them out into individual tracks, then select which hits or passages you want to keep and sew them together as you like. this makes your tracks sound much more professional
>>
>>130718077
hmm interesting i will look into it then thanks

it was never really that good even with the vocals. it was common to hate mainstream music and the artists became successful because they didn't have much competition. the competition like skrillex were similarly annoying anyway. most people didn't even hear much besides the vocals on their car radios and in the grocery store. it's only now when people have better audio that it became a tiktok trend to point out the goofy beats.

beyonce is a forced meme. do some research about destiny's child. many of beyonce's songs have kinda cringe, borderline tone deaf elements, not as bad as kehlani but beyonce isn't supposed to be one of your main influences if you have any clue about music.

you and many anons have naive taste that belongs 15-20 years in the past, so you're easily impressed by these goofy sounds like skrillex and this goofy single ladies beat, it's musical junk food, go ahead and try to take influences from this style and see how far it takes you, surely you will get millions of streams, maybe even with a grammy

Some guy who makes YT tutorials and videos. He also sells a "course" but I've found his free videos pretty helpful since I use ableton. Though I don't use Serum but that's not a huge deal
>>
>>130722303
just skimmed a couple videos and they look fine for beginners, but buying a course from somebody like that would be silly.
>>
Here's a stupid question

I didn't understand Ableton's project system so well and I realise I've mostly been making all my tracks in the same project folder, just as different files.

That means that all my sample files are in the same folder, and for some reason ableton doesn't put the original file in the filename so it's impossible for me to know WHAT song any given sample in an ableton project folder came from

If I go into one of the songs in this project folder and select "deleted unused files", is there a risk that ableton will delete samples that other projects in the same project folder are using??
>>
>>130723122
Yeah that sounds like a mistake
Uh, I'm not 100% sure, but what you should probably do, for each of your projects in that folder, is:
>open the project
>"save as" to a new location/folder
>"collect all and save"
That command should copy everything relevant from your clusterfuck folder to the new folder for that project. Do that for each project, and they'll all end up with copies of their own files in their separate folders. Once done, you can delete the original folder (though maybe just try zipping it or renaming it to make sure there weren't any old references that got missed)
>>
>>130723172
okay googling it looks like I got confused between the concepts of sets and projects

it really feels dumb that ableton doesn't add the originating set name in sound recording filenames. I basically need to clear up space on my harddrive but I can't do that without potentially deleting important files from sets I do want to keep.

Is there any way to separate sets from a project folder?

This shit is going to take forever jesus christ. I can't delete anything until I've backed up everything.
>>
>>130723278
yep i did the same thing when i first started using it, i have like 200 sets all in the same first "untitled" project before i realized. I just started saving stuff into new projects each time after i realized, so i dont have any help other than to say i feel your pain
>>
>>130723007
Yeah, I am a beginner, so I've been finding it helpful. Especially the ones where he walks through different genres, seeing techniques I wouldn't have thought of before.

I think you should make a folder for each .als file and copy them in there. Then when you own the .als file it won't know where the samples are but you can have it search for them and point it to the old megafolder with everything. After it finds everything choose "collect all and save" and it will copy the samples into the new folder

is there an actual difference between synth vsts? seems to me they are like 95% the same thing but with different UIs
>>
>>130726764
no, most anons are on your side, they want to cheat their way to success without putting in the work of understanding gear and acquiring gear

part of the talent is to understand the sound, whether you do much of the sound work yourself or hire a producer and mixing/mastering engineers to help you with that, someone like tim hecker doesn't buy gear just as a flex, he's very intentional with what sounds he wants, meanwhile a DAW-only fag is a clueless amateur who foolishly believes that he's getting the proper sounds but he doesn't have the wiring in his brain to be artistic

you should treat every project as seriously as a final product, i think it's just a good attitude to have and will help you be consistent in later projects, even if you know it isn't a final project, it helps to visualise exactly what you're going for later. dont brush off projects like their insignificant, its your art man, and its important

I see, thanks for listening!
I didn't include the long intro, which might give some perspective to the mix (that whole section is sort of like a drop - I wanted to have a long crescendo intro, then a loud short song as a drop, sort of like https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eO-eAldJmA8&list=RDeO-eAldJmA8&start_radio=1 - in a very different style obviously, or https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-NlGJDwRXxI&list=RD-NlGJDwRXxI&start_radio=1).
Here's the whole thing:
https://voca.ro/1ooOtPzqe155
But I'm still unsure about the flow of it all. It's not a common structure and I want to make sure I follow the emotion, the dynamics make sense, and the listener stays entertained.

>>130735733
bro please move on. you learn way faster just writing more songs compared to hovering on the same whatever track for months.
>>
>>130735733
being this ambivalent about a track usually means you cant and dont want to salvage it. do you want to develop it more or move on? no use in telling us really

it's probably the boomer lmfao. you're running into hard limits of what your brain is capable of no matter what advice you get or how hard you practice. there's nothing you can do about it. even if you're a paypig so you can hire people there are limitations to that, there are richfags like cara delevingne who make music and their music sucks.
>>
a while back the boomer asked about how to make basic decisions like if you have a couple of different options for how a song could go. an anon answered that they just pick the option that sounds best and the boomer lashed out because he thought the anon was me. these are basic brain functions that can't really be taught. a lot of it is subconscious and comes automatically. it mostly depends on genetics and upbringing (education, cultural environment, nutrition etc). either you have the genetics to be a genius or you don't.
>>
>>130739461
Is 'the boomer' everyone you disagree with or is it actually a particular person?
>>
>>130719075
Well everyone else always leaves, so that makes recording hard.

Do dos era 8 bit chiptune

it's one person in particular who's extremely asshurt about me and he's having to perform olympic level mental gymnastics to justify to himself why he should keep trying to make music even though he's literally retarded

Satanic

the boomer is a woke morally degraded anon who is obsessed with me

Well, I'm at least learning a lot with it. I'm happy with the bass line. And it's not finished, but the mixing sounds better than anything I've done before. I can try a few more things, and then shelve it.

Dissociative identity disorder is a bitch
>>
>>130739854
Well, if you're so intelligent and logical compared to all the retards (or the boomer etc.) why don't you just ignore them completely? Are you not capable of restraint?
>>

MPE is really neat. I just got a cheap osmose and I've been sat on the same patch for an hour. If 1% of the rest of the presets are as nice as this one, it was worth the grand I paid for it.
>>
>>130739169
I don't think I'm the boomer you're talking about. I haven't posted here in weeks, not since I was rushing to complete my track for the last /dmp/ album. I don't think anyone replied

neural amp modeler saved my life

where the stereo version though? i’m tired of making my MIDI mono and having to haas effect everything

right, the boomer doesn't post music because he's a pussy but he still acts like he's superior to me

>>130740625
i was going to ignore them because they've completely shit the bed countless times. i was just skimming through the thread out of curiosity and responded to >>130715199 in good faith but anons proved yet again that they can't discuss anything in a meaningful way. have fun trying to copy elements of songs like 'single ladies' or whatever it is that you want to do while missing the overall point of what makes music good. i'm deriving a sense of satisfaction from your failures like you can hardly imagine, it's like sex, but most anons probably have incel vibes with low hormone levels so you don't even enjoy sex as much as a chad does. you literally cannot imagine how enjoyable it is to have a genius mind and to be in a constant feedback loop of having your ideas get validated and always learning new things and making progress tackling even the most complex problems. being truly successful at making music, not just being a mcdonald's wagie tier gig worker, is an intellectual pursuit like you literally cannot fully understand.
>>
I've been trying to make something decent using LMMS for almost five years now. I now realize it's all just samples and packs. Fuck digital "music", I'm gonna go relearn my clarinet that I haven't touched in a decade.

you and many anons literally believe that plugin emulations sound as good as hardware. that has nothing to do with me. YOU are exposed as being an amateur retard. meanwhile actual professionals are using hardware all day long. even when some artists still fall for the meme of hiring overpriced ITB engineers like serban ghenea there is lots and lots of hardware involved at the production and mastering stages.

So am I allowed to use osTIrus or not

>right, the boomer doesn't post music because he's a pussy but he still acts like he's superior to me
As if you posted music and didn't act like you were superior lol
>>
>>130741443
i literally am superior, i understand things in ways that you don't, you don't even see the humor in that youtubers keep mentioning 1176 compressors, anons were completely uninterested in even looking for 1176 plugins before i started spamming it
>>
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CsrTR2zuk4s
this is one of the weaker clones but he has such an orgasmic reaction to it. it would be funny if anons got trolled into buying a weak clone but anons either don't see the point in using an 1176 at all, or they don't believe that the hardware sounds better than a plugin, or even if they would be willing to buy hardware, they're too retarded to do their research and decide which one to buy (there are different revisions of vintage urei, there's the modern universal audio recreation by bill putnam's son which is also popular in pro studios so there would be some merit to have it just to have a sonic footprint that listeners subconsciously associate with the top artists, and there are numerous other clones from different brands)

are you the guy I suggested nam to a few weeks ago?
why not just run two tracks and pan them left and right?

there's a notorious anon "justicefag" who was obsessed with the music act called justice. there was an elaborate parody webm made about him years ago. justice presented the narrative that they just had a very humble home studio, but pic related is what it was, with two 1176 among other things. justicefag has obsessed about other artists that he thinks made music with hardly any monetary investment so that he can feel validated in trying to make music with just software, he's also very into specific katy perry and beyonce songs, he also really likes vocoders and he seems to appreciate the lyrics more than other aspects of the music. he doesn't post 24/7 like the boomer but when he does post he's a pretty obnoxious real schizo while anons falsely accuse me of being the schizo just because they don't understand things that i understand effortlessly without even trying.
>>
>>130742106
no i was the nona that got suggested it a few months ago

that was a shitpost, i just L/R it in an ableton rack.
... it only takes like 5 seconds and whatever the cpu hit is, which is mostly irrelevant (for me) since anything i use an amp on is an insta-bounce if it's not guitar.

>>130742121
i was actually just wondering if the chuzo persona was actually invented by a previous mentally ill poster...
clearly you've been around long enough to know this lore, at least.
justicefag had a similar "there's no point in trying" energy lol
