popular gimmick band, but their music is dry and not for me. there are better microtonal groups anyway

somehow their worldwide shows are absolutely packed with hysterical normies, and yet everyone on the internet says it's boring and "not for them".

They're fun and weird. It seems like half of people are saying they're the most amazing new band and the other half are hating on them for being a gimmick band, and I think both sides are dumb tbqh. I don't think what they're doing is amazing, but I think it's decently interesting, I just see them as a new band in the lineage of stuff like Frank Zappa, Captain Beefheart, Devo, The Residents, Primus, Magma, etc.

bait?
>>
>>130714684
No. I hate when people on here get triggered by something and say "bait"
>>
Not something I'd listen to much, but undoubtedly talented band. Saw a video of a recent live show and they know how to work their songs for a stage. Big ass build and release on em.

check the archive if you want, as recent as a few weeks ago there were multiple threads about these guys daily. Seems like half the board thinks they're sick and half thinks it's shit
I don't hate it but I also don't find it that interesting
>>
>>130714684
It's exactly what they are. and the difference with let's say Magma is that they're not pretentious, and funny.
Do they succeed? I don't know, I don't like The Residents so I couldn't tell you if their retardness is on par with the gods of retardness.
>>
>>130714630
no I don't go near the normiesphere aside from facebook boomers and proles (that's where i saw the most criticism).
I think they're too minimal, it works great as conceptual art and a live freak show, but it doesn't work as music, you can't listen to a full record without seeing the performance (and even while seeing them it gets tedious after a point)
>>
>>130714199
it s okay (only because there is so little overdubbed shit, not because le microharmonics)i miss the overdubs of DubFX https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UiInBOVHpO8
>>
I like them very much, both in the alien costumes and in the incarnation without them
>>
going to their free Montreal jazz fest gig yet each day even hour i can already feel their hype dying down. pretty clear that Rush (deservedly) stole their audience or at least the normies who rely on algorithm instantly graduated to them due to the reunion vids.
>>
>>130715996
Good, so it will actually be possible to get tickets the next time they're playing in my area, and possibly even at a reasonable price. The short attention span of zoomers is good for at least one thing.

I forgot all about them after their social media push at the first of the year. They're fine, but forgettable. I'm sure they're swell guys though.
>>
>>130716609
Agreed. I'd watch them at a festival maybe. But I don't go to festivals.

This, I can appreciate their unique looks and sound, but it's not for me, I'll always prefer to listen 80s Synthpop 4 EVER

listened to them once to see what the hype was about then never listened to them again -core
>>
>>130714199
I am sure their nonsense is very entertaining live but their albums are not noteworthy in the slightest.
A band with no good records but is fun live is definitely an improvement over most music gaining traction which is just cynical and horrible in both settings.

The problem with microtonal music is that if the focus is solely on the gimmick it ends up all sounding the same. That’s not to say you can’t do interesting things with it, but it often feels like these bands are stuck playing permanently in a specific mode with nothing to contrast it with. a lot of the songs still inevitably revolve around fairly simple chord sequences but with atonal substitutions.

As a live act it looks like they are unbelievably tight. I’m just not entirely sold on the music
>>
>>130714199
they are clearly skilled, but personally I find their music boring and not particularly memorable. and the onions fanbase is a huge turnoff

They're skilled musicians, but they sound too much like King Gizzard and I got bored of them like 6 years ago. I respect the act, though.
>>
>>
so far i have put these guys on (audio only) without saying anything at a party with hipster zoomettes and zoomerfags then at a garage with boomers drinking beer in the afternoon then at my turbo-normie buddy's house who only listens to top 40.
each place nobody said or mentioned anything. despite the microtonal sounds it existed as just background noise. even worse. it didn't exist at all.
thought at least someone would mutter 'oh is this that weird polka dot mask duo' but there was not even an eyebrow raising to be had.

I find it weird as a montrealer that these guys blew up globally. Noise/math/postrock etc "hipster music" has always been popular here. To me these guys are like so many plateau-mile end bands over the decades accept for the costumes.
>>
>>130722857
Normies always need some faggy gimmick to cling onto as they are common filth who don't get music on any deeper level than "others like it so I like it"

This is true of AdP and King Gizzard, but there's plenty of less-popular artists who do genuinely create original, interesting, tonal harmony in non 12edo tuning systems. Doesn't even require looking that hard.

for now they seem invincible. however what is inevitable will be their political views becoming exposed and when that happens it will be completely over for them and their music, aura record sales hype tours full of no phone normies...all of it.
>>
>>130714199
music is just okay, the fact that it started as gag/joke band is fairly obvious and carries over into the music and performance, good marketing though
>>

new session with some other songs

I like them. I'm used to the micronals by now. bought a fretless bass just to play around with microtones myself.
it's always nice to be inspired to try something new
>>
>>130732341
Hearing stories like this makes me like this band

Make sure you check out other microtonal rock music, there's a decent amount out there!

they have an agent called Weinstein, so them being ultra-zionist quebecois hillbillies is not out of the question, but it doesn't track with their music style at all

SO who is going to their free outdoor jazzfest show this weekend?

I really do wonder how massive the crowd is going to be. Tens of thousands obviously but which number? If they somehow break the jazzfest free show record I will shit my pants.

Hipster syndrome
>>
>>130735014
This may shock you but some people don't see life as an endless chain of political statements
>>
>>130735014
>ultra-zionist quebecois hillbillies
This is an oxymoron. The hillbillies are all national socialists who vote P/BQ. Its Quebec (((anglophones))) "are the cause of all of quebecs problems" montreal is a cancerous blight etc etc etc. These guys vote Quebec solidaire(center left) 100% and don't care about federal politics because it doesn't matter here its all rigged to hate on Alberta&Quebec for sticking out.

>>
>>130739706
the hype took a big swing downward last week. they did a show in quebec outside and barely 1500 people showed up. it's now 'oh yea those guys...whatever'.
if that free jazz fest show took place just one month ago it could have been staggering in size.
remains to be seen is the ontario gigs. i imagine hillside fest being small will go alright for them.
>>
>>130742089
Are you talking about the Joliette gig, or another one?
https://youtu.be/5OqYDoBUNfs?si=Dl8hSAq0DV8FouOY
>>
>>130742122
i see about 1500 people there. taking that jack white opening killed them. i am still driving up to montreal the amount of easy no bra zoomette puss waiting to be crushed cannot be turned down.
>>
>>130714199
It's not it for old heads. There's tons of great math rock including two-piece bands that are more worth the spin.
>>
The industry plants are getting lazier and lazier.
>>
>>130714199
They remind me most of buckethead. Yeah the image is a gimmick. The music is out there but accessible enough. Which is where I think the internet hatred comes from. They're not true avant-garde but still too weird to show your coworkers. But holy shit these last few years we need more like that instead of splitting every scene into their algorithms.

I only see them going to ways though. I dont think their sound has enough variety so they'll either rehash and go the way of the blog house a la bloody beetroots. Best case is if they up the humor and weirdness they could totally go out like the aquabats
>>
>>130742089
>barely 1500 people showed up
that's a lot of people and here >>130742122
it looks like it's comfortably full. I fail to see how that's 'swinging downward'
>>
They've gone crazy in the UK. 77,000 people in the queue to buy tickets for a 3,000 capacity venue
>>
>>130739952
Absolutely.
>>
>>130743569
barely 1 mil listeners left on spotify, only 100k listeners on lastfm, scrobbling collapsing

its a cool gimmick, music is just okay, not much staying power just good marketing and visual identity

its pretty obvious the band started as a joke but unless they move into making incredible music no one is gonna keep giving a fuck
>>
>>130714199
I'm glad there getting there flowers. Wonderful band, great live show too!
>>
>>130714199
I like the music, it reminds me of Hella mixed with Battles. I'm sure it's popular only because of the costumes and good marketing, but it is interesting for this side of math rock to get any mainstream attention.
>>
>>130714199
Like them and like loopy music. I bought both vinyls. Stay mad
