Sidenote: Shlagenheim finally clicked for me

Anyway, is there anything else close to that level of quality coming out of one particular venue other than maybe CBGBs in the late 70s?

Also, is it a popular or unpopular opinion to say I like studio Black Midi way better than the live videos I've seen?

is the Windmill particularly iconic itself or is that area just lack for (good) venues so these bands play there often? plenty of cities have good scenes but almost none are named after particular venues just because most cities have a lot of venues

A big part of the core of good rock bands out of that scene isn't the Windmill, it's Dan Carey. I've rarely heard such loud, noisy music recorded and mixed with such clarity. He should be mentioned in the same breath as Martin Hannett. His album with The Lounge Society is interesting as well, he seems to like working with bands when they're still in their teens and in a gestational state, unusual for the industry machine today.

I just wish Cavalcade would get a new mix/master down the line on some anniversary or other. A lot of people were still getting back into the swing of things coming out of covid and the quality of some things was impaired by being made around that time. Nature Always Wins by Maximo Park is also from spring 2021 and it has some nice songwriting as good as their first couple of albums but is hampered by sounding like it's being streamed on iTunes in 2008 as a result of being produced during lockdown.

I like Squid (and begrudgingly like Black Midi) the rest is cringe

play 6 minutes of a 7/8 guitar riff and say shit like “i remember when we fucked against my Sonic Youth poster / your father stood in line at Tesco for a toaster” and then start blaring every horn instrument you can find around the 4 minute mark and /mu/ will be like “this literally feels like i am witnessing the construction of the pyramids of giza”

The windmill is important because it’s an actual scene that has survived all the insane nightlife laws that have come into effect over the last decade. I’ll still go occasionally, the venue itself is just a grimy, smelly pub, the tickets are dirt cheap and the music is very hit and miss. But that’s exactly how a local scene should be, it doesn’t feel cultivated or heavily curated. And every now and again you’ll discover a band there that is genuinely great.

>authentic and vital music scene
>full of dorky London rich kids with music degrees
lol. lmao.

Most of the bands at windmill shows aren’t rich or classically trained. BCNR are an exception but they’re not really “locals” to the scene. BM went to a performing arts school but I wouldn’t describe it as a rich upbringing, I knew plenty of poor people who went to Brit school too. All the other artists are mostly untrained literal whos (for better and for worse)

I appreciate that information, will adjust my perception of the scene accordingly, and refrain from making presumptuous disparaging comments in the future. Thank you.

Oh very cool that you're a local to it, maybe i can clarify my question- why do you think it got to be called the "Windmill" scene? is that just the most notable or longstanding venue? or the one the bands would most often play? it doesn't sound like a particularly high-quality venue which is why i'm asking

>so much great music
>people only ever talk about the same three or four bands

“Scene” isn’t exactly the right word, it really is just a dingy little pub. but I think it mostly captures the idea of a venue or space bringing together all sorts of small emerging acts, both locally and internationally. It’s also a place where the bigger artists who emerged out of it can experiment and road-test new material. I once saw Geordie Greep do a surprise set there playing songs from The New Sound before he had even announced the solo project, hearing it for the first time live was an absolute trip

You can just tell from the look in his eyes Greep has that dog in him, damn
