It's mostly because his music captured a specific era rather than it being extremely good music. Its like sadboy soundcloud rap. They all had this trend they jumped on, very specific trend, and when it passes by they find themselves struggling to hop onto the next trend because they've already pigeonholed themselves into a specific trend

Mac demarcos trend was edgy teenagers who are somewhat hipster, somewhat skater, somewhat anxious, intelligent student-core. The fashion moved on, the music isnt really considered cool. He also got older and looks more like a dad than some dungaree wearing skater with lots of energy and future ahead of him which matched his music

There will always be a market for him, but when your music captures an "aesthetic" moreso than the music itself, you cant last forever doing big numbers

Another part of that time frame was just how connected things were that nothing really got to just have a moment and be savored with its existence.
