I just watched whiplash. How do I get into jazz? Recommend me some great tunes, albums, etc.
>>130814383So many fucking noob threads these days, what happened to /mu/? I miss 2014. Get the FUCK out of my board NOW
>>130814425no. I want jazz and I want it now.We can make it the easy way, or the hard way
>>130814425I bet you have no problem with the faggoty ass kpop threads though.
>>130814441he creates them

>>130814383start with Cassiopea
just ask an ai you will get better responses
>>130814569>Asian Jazzof course
>>130814590Fuck AI. I prefer an opinion of a degenerate retard, it's more trustworthy and better than AI slop
>>130814383The drummer has such tense, horrible technique in this movie.
>>130814617>normal people>recommend thing>4chan>recommends japanese / korean version of a thing
>>130814653And he was a professional! He trained since he was 13! I'ts kinda laghauble, but it's true!
>>130814653Yeah he was rushing or dragging through the whole movie and his tempo was off
fpbp
>>130814939I am more talking about how he tenses every muscle in his body and looks like he is about tk have aneurysm every time he plays.
>>130815348>fuck you I won't share the music you want me to
>>130815408That's Hollywood directing for you, they make actors put on affected faces and body language so audiences that know nothing about music can LITERALLY see the determination in his eyes. Doesn't this movie literally having him shed blood, sweat and tears over his kit? Lmao. Movies are so good with subtlety these days.
>>130815408Best part? it wasn't staged
>>130815412This
>>130815416There are literally 60 gorillion articles online about great jazz albums for noobs. The idea that anons are hiding Max Roach and Clifford Brown from you is adorable.

>>130815439Oh yes, I really want to know what faggots think about music. Why do you think I'm here? FOr sport?
>>130814383If you're a gamer/weeb you will love fusion. Mahavishnu Orchestra, Return to Forever, Tony Williams Lifetime, 70s' Miles, etc.If you want music more in line with the movie then you want big band, swing, some bop. Duke Ellington, Glenn Miller, early Quincy Jones, Gil Evans, Cannonball Adderley, Oliver Nelson, etc. But the neat thing about jazz is how specific you can get, in terms of instrumentation and band lineups. Do you like big bands over trios/quartets/quintets? Do you like piano or guitar? It's super easy to find groups and albums that appeal to your specific requests.
>>130815473>Mahavishnu Orchestrthis one I know, it's a good start
Kenny. G.
>>130815473>swing, some bop.So much fucking this. It's literally the majority of people who want to listen to Jazz. Finally someone who tells it like it is. I would recommend Cannonball dudeI would probably add some acapella jazz songs, alas...

>>130815499anything not-racist?
jazz is very hard to define - prove me wrong
Oh good another jazz thread devolving into honk victimhood, how swell.
>>130815515It's like a language. Jazz and so-called "classical" and all its eras are really the only kinds of music that feel like unique forms of speech. No one has a definition of Swedish or Chinese, but you know it when you hear it, and if you're fluent then you're in for a treat.
>>130815527*honk*

>>130815671sabrina carpenter
I thought this album was extremely mid but tourist rockists with a penchant for hipster taste tend to love it, so here you go I guess.www.youtube.com/watch?v=xx_WwAHKBnI
>>130815722>sabrina carpenteroh this is severe. ill leave this to the pros.
>>130814383Dude idk, i started listening to jazz before the age of ten and was making youtube playlists by age twelve. Honestly don’t know where I would start if I wasn’t raised on it. Probably somewhat chronologically. Take your time digging into one artist at a time. Start with something pretty early like Benny Goodman, maybe even listen to some ragtime before that, that’s how I started was playing rags at 7.Then definitely listen to Louis Armstrong. Duke Ellington. Then try some Dizzy Gillespie and we’re starting to move away from dance-oriented jazz. Sonny Clark and Sonny Rollins will show you the aftermath of bebop. Get some Mingus in ya. Spiritual jazz masters like pharoah sanders and Lonnie Liston smith take the bite out and instead offer to float you above the clouds. Then Miles Davis flips everything on its head with cool jazz, try some of that. Not gonna touch on fusion or free jazz but you will probably know where you want to go by the time you get to here.Take your time, don’t listen to all this shit in a day. I would spend multiple days if not a couple weeks digesting each one of these artists along with your other listening. Don’t rush it, jazz is about context and building a language that is iterated on more and more. Enjoy the cultural context of each era. I didn’t start regularly listening to and enjoying some of the more angular avant-garde jazz for like at least a decade of listening
>>130815782based knower. i also love liston smith and it also took me years before i could enjoy avant-garde jazz. i used to be that stereotypical metal dork that called anything i didnt like "boring and pretentious"
>>130815757How about Magdalena Bay
>>130815782i understand the value of understanding the development of jazz but i feel like benny goodman & louis armstrong might seem kind of boring to someone uninitiated with jazz in 2026 to be honest.
>>130815878nta but those recommendations aren't a stretch if someone liked the music in that movie
