holy shit
>*concludes classical and jazz*
>>130818221i wouldn't go that far but it's the most accomplished genre-crossover album i've heard to date that's for sure
>>130818262It literally concluded classical and jazz.
>>130818270I'm thirteen minutes in and this is just boring drone-y post-rock like Explosions in the Sky, This Will Destroy You, Godspeed You! Black Emperor, etc.I'll keep listening, but I'm not feeling it at all.
Toby Driver is obviously God.
>>130819107what album is this
>>130819147Kayo Dot - Choirs Of The Eye
>>130819147nvm found it>>130819158thanks anyway
>>130819107you compare it to post rock because you listen to post rock. listen to more classical and jazz
>>130819107This album clears those bands desu, specifically meandercore Gy!Be. It's much more tightly composed. For instance, the way the first song alone recapitulates the flute melody into the crashing chords as well as the increasingly distorted voice returning in the end
>>130818270I once read in an interview with two guys from the band in which they said they didn't really add jazz to their tunes and that this upset them when their stuff was reviewed. So yeahAlthough it's undeniable there's some contemporary classical aspect to it. I don't think the first song has proper riffs as far as metal goes
>>130818209Keep the "shit" and drop the "holy."
>>130819195You couldn't be further from the truth.I'm a classical pianist and especially love the period around the late 1800s to the 1950s. I've played Ravel's Miroirs, some of Liszt's transcendental etudes, Faure, Scriabin, Szymanowski, the list goes on.As for jazz, I played in the jazz band at my college. I don't really care for noodly shit, but I do appreciate a lot of stuff by the Ahmad Jamal Trio, Bill Evans, Miles Davis (esp. Kind of Blue), Chet Baker, even modern groups like the Moses Yoofee Trio.I did listen to that post rock back around the mid 00's maybe early 10's, which is why I am somewhat familiar with that sound. If you're talking genre-crossover shit, then I would have to hand that to Jaga Jazzist's The Styx -- incredible album, but I wouldn't call that classical. Efterklang have some great work, but they're more folk-oriented.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pg_loGNDre4https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sKccgM0VN0Q
the ending of that second song is fucking weird. i don't know what they're doing with the harmonies but it sounds like it's trying to split into two songs
>>130819287nigga thats the best song on the album (manifold curiosity is a VERY close second) stop tripping
>>130819321i meant it as a compliment. i want to hear more songs like it. sounds maybe like lightning breaking out
>>130819336ahh my bad cuh, carry on carry on
>>130819239metalheads still have this thing when reviewing albums where they'll describe any abstracted harmony or unfamiliar rhythm as "jazzy". the amount of times i've been recommended "jazzy" metal albums is unreal, it always leaves me feeling like that specific kind of frustration you get when they get your pizza toppings wrong at checkout
>>130819498YeahThis band at least has some wind section going at some points. Most of the time metal guys say jazz this jazz that whenever some chords with extensions are played
