Why does Kendrick Lamar have so much more WPA (White People Appeal) than J Cole? Among black hip hop fans they are considered to be on even ground, but if you look at critic scores and RYM averages, you would see white people hate Cole.
Because most white people come to rap with a background of reading and poetry and understand that Kendrick operates on multiple levels whereas Cole reheats old rap tropes about being an underdog ad nauseum, which traditional rap fans (Blacks) appreciate.
