classic. of course a lot more people have heard the Shirelles cover version.

The Lennon Sisters did a good cover. People look down on them for being on Lawrence Welk but they were genuinely great, excellent harmony.

Monkey Hips and Rice: The "5" Royales Anthology [Rhino, 1994]
Competing double-discs by Clyde McPhatter's Drifters and Harvey Fuqua's Moonglows convince me that these guys were the shit. The Coasters still rule, but the Coasters' sui generis wasn't their own, and beneath the musicianship they were basically comedians. Lowman Pauling's hard-touring sextet did it all, laughs included, and although Pauling's thought-through songwriting and groundbreaking guitar made him the auteur, singer Johnny Tanner deserves more grafs than he'll ever get in the prehistory of soul. They were sincere. They were dirty. They were smart. They were stoopid. They were great artists. They ended up working nine-to-five and going to church on Sundays. A

Their version obviously copies >>130890786 rather than the Shirelles. I've also never heard them mentioned in /mu/ in X year threads.

They're kind of a meme that was never taken seriously because >>130890569. They did nothing actually wrong like Pat Boone or Trini Lopez or whatever did, they were just deliberately clean cut and not artistically compelling or anything.

This Mexican fucker was a nifty "update" of 50s housewife pop for the new decade. Absolute bilge and well-known in Goodwill bins.

Ah so that's what he looks like. I think I've flipped past hundreds of his records inattentively.

>>130891024
Christgau denounced him in this review of a Burt Bacharach comp iirc.

tl;dr is they traded the orchestration of the 50s for lite rock-and-roll and folk as those had been absorbed into mainstream pop by the 60s

Also recording for Coral and Dot would give anyone a bad rep.

This is the Lennon Sisters cover of Sue Thompson's breakout hit. If it's a little more MOR-ish than hers, at least it's more believable because they were actually young enough to be age appropriate for the lyrics unlike Sue who was pretending to be her daughter.

it's a cute song but forgotten today possibly because the lyrics didn't age well
