>>130890072>zero individualitynot op, but could you explain further? also, to preface, while I like some of mbv very much (mostly just loveless and their self-titled record), I'm not the biggest fan - so I'm not upset by your characterization.I ask because as far as I can tell music taste doesn't have to do with individuality or any other concept. their is/are causes, to be sure, but I don't think we can conceptualize them - certainly not in le current year. so - and this is true of every artist or band, potentially - while I haven't surveyed every person whose favorite band is mbv, I don't see why one would necessarily assume none of them have "individuality"; I imagine plenty have gone out and sought out other music, found a good amount they like, but ultimately like mbv the most for whatever reason.

>>130890103MBV are fine, but typically the kind of person whose favorite band is MBV is the kind of person whose top 100 albums are the RYM top 100 chart.
>>130890116I see what you mean. we don't necessarily have to get (too much) into the finer semantic distinctions of the term, but idk that I'd describe the circumstance you mentioned as showing a lack of individuality. there is certainly a tendency for people to get most of their listening recommendations from one place, but assuming they genuinely like most of the top 100 chart, then their taste would just so happen to conform to the chart; I'm sure there are others who have heard most of the music on there and liked a minority of it - neither is necessarily disingenuous. but there is also the circumstance of people not thinking that critically about what they're listening to and "like" what is popular when really they don't particularly care for most of it sonically but are perhaps just creative types and at best find listening to new music interesting. the question is how often that happens, vs genuine enjoyment of the music, and tbqh idk.
