a verse and chorus from a project i want to develop more with my friend. how does it sound? i did some experimentation with serial and parallel compression

how do you structure a song that has only one or two chords? making typical verse/chorus music is way easier than making electronic music that revolves around a single idea or something like these:

Honestly I really dig the sound. It's just your vocals at the beginning of the phrase which seem to falter as if you're trying to secure your pitch. I'd honestly try to use your core more and confidently hit your note. I know what you're going for. And I know you can hit the notes. It's just the only element of this production I feel takes away from it all. Otherwise, I think the compression on the guitar is a little too harsh. Try and keep it controlled without resorting to what sounds like a short release. Got a bit of that wavy buffeting feeling in my ears.
>>
>>130902179
I'd focus on every element complementing the two chord progression. Keep everything else interesting, like a jam band does, wherein you could vary the drums, solo instruments, even spread vocals hitting different rootless harmonies within the key. If it feels boring, it is!
>>
>>130902179
focus the develop/movement with every other aspect of the song. what harmony is playing around it? does the timbre morph? how do other rhythms interact with the core ideas so on so on.

that whole talking heads album is a pretty glaring example of how "loop bad >:(" in the strictest boomerest sense is a skill issue (and should extend its logic to other disparaged attributes of what are perceived as making electronic music "lazy").
that said the live version fucks

Another render of my untitled trance track (which I started from a YT tutorial). Next step is to add some risers and noise and shit, and then it's done. The mixing is pretty good I think, but you tell me please. Idk how to release stuff.

>>130909619
i think the drums should sound a little bigger if not louder, but pretty decent sound overall from what i can tell.
>>
>>130902378
yeah vocals are definitely the weakest link in my productions. thankfully these are just references for the melody, my friend will be singing on this project.
i did drive the saturation on the guitars a fuckload, i wanted it to sound quite aggressive. compression not so much though

Thanks, for the previous version an anon didn't like the ride, but yeah I know the snare is low, I'll see what I can do

Aside from playing and recording better, any tips on how to make it sound better? Sounds ok on my not studio monitors (wide and bassy). Meanwhile it's horrible on my MDR750s (tinny and DI sounding) and I can hear the hiss, as well as the lead track too panned on the left which I never noticed on my normie speakers. Thanks

I love this genre, do they use Roland JV/SC88 to get these sounds?

any thoughts on the korg vst synth collection? i'd like to own some of them but some of them are almost the same price as just buying the collection itself
>>
>>130902179
You can do it a lot of ways but with electronic music a easy life hack is to create a loop that is 8 bars long. The 8 bar loop is the earworm loop. It makes your song fast but not too fast. Make a 8 bar loop and repeat it a bunch of times. At the fourth 8 bar loop you want to delete a couple of elements to create a quick fill. You can even delete like 4 bars and just put a big fat reese bass for a easy but sophisticated sounding fill. This should give you enough heuristics to understand a lot
>>
>>130917048
Actually let me revise this what you want to do is create a mini fill at the end of the second 8 bar loop and then u create a longer fill that lasts maybe 4 to 8 bars at the fourth 8 bar loop. Parse that and there is a easy formula to get started structuring out electronic in a easy and real way
>>
>>130912414
Thanks man. I appreciate it.

Any resources on song writing? Thjs shit is harder than I thought. I was going to just do it by winging it and listening to my favorite artists, but it's much more obtuse than I thought. Any helpful sources out there that you have used?

learn other peoples’ songs. chart them out. take notes.
use what you observe as a framework forunderstandijg how theory or whatever else you learn is applied.
>>
>>130920651
What do you mean by "song writing"?
Coming up with melodies? Arrangement? Lyrics?
>>
>>130920841
This is good advice and what I was doing before, but I'm hitting road blocks and starting to sound like other people/ripping off melodies. I swear I've rewritten Teenage Dirtbag like 2 times now by accident

looking for suggestions rather than answers;
ive got three separate vocal tracks and they are all running into a reverb and a delay auxiliary and then those auxiliaries are routed into the vocal bus where i use some bus compression and saturation. but this is where i begin to question what im doing. would it be more optimal to create a reverb/delay aux and return it to the vocal bus instead of the three individual tracks?
>>
>>130920959
dog you gotta rewrite this and mind how people interpret aux and “return” lol

>>130921278
a diagram then

this is my current routing. is there any great advantage or disadvantage placing the reverb and delay bus after the vocal bus then into the mix bus?
>>
>>130921356
i forgot to draw the separate connections from the vocal tracks to the delay bus but whatever

>>130921412
id be willing to post this WIP but i have the flu at the moment and my voice sounds fucked. probably next time then
>>
>>130921451
Not a pro, but I think it gets into the weeds like how guitar heads stress about their pedal chain order, when there are really only very specific effects that need to go in certain places. Like fuzz.
But the stress about distortion in front of reverb or reverb in front of guitar doesn't really matter unless it's hyper noticeable. This seems negligible if you can't really tell the difference. Ears are always king.
>>
>>130921595
a bit off topic but ive been putting the delay before my distortions so it sounds like its ripping the space time continuum
>>
anyone successfully taught themselves to sing? ive got better at pitch accuracy but my tone is still ass. i sound like a gay homosexual opera singer fuck my chud life
>>
>>130921668
make a playlist of vocalists you want to sound like and sing along with it every day in the car
>>
>>130921601
sweet. I like putting distortion before and after my reverb. Sounds massive
>>
>>130921356
this is the proper way to do it in general.
you want whatever compression/limiting you're doing in the vocal buss to push down the delay/reverb when the dry signal is playing.
if you were doing something particularly ambient or washy sounding you would want it the other way though, perhaps.
other variables would obviously include style/arrangement. i actually use way more delays/reverbs then that and none of them are shared, but they're also constantly weaving in and out so there's no buildup. i think skipping the vox buss is also logical for some things like the standard delay-on-last-word-of-phrase/verse so it sits more as its own thing. much to consider. not weedsy at all
>>

Refined version of a song i posted earlier. Sorry if it makes you pee. the song is sopping wet
>>
>>130921668
I always advise for a little bit of vocal coaching. I believe you can learn how to better use your voice with some YouTube tutorials (don't know which ones tho).
>>
I might be tarded but I don't have a single idea how MIDI controllers/sequencers work.

Say I have a synth and an MPC one, but I want to use two different patches at the same time. If I just add another track on the MPC and record the new patch into that track, will both patches play on top of eachother?

And will I need a separate mixer if I want to start adding more synths to the workflow?

I'd expect those kinds of mixing issues with my kinda of projects that have a dozen instruments and a dozen more layers of Stuff™. You've just got 2 guitars here. Do you have anything you can visually troubleshoot with? Idk what you're recording with, but a simple volume level meter, pan settings and a variable EQ should fix you right up.
Also you need some drums in there somewhere.
>>
>>130923130
People don't know that you can peak resonance on the eq into distortion for free gains rofl this is like the start of a whole genre of sound design technique
>>
>>130921595
It depends, do you want the reverb to also go into distortion or do you want the dry distortion to have reverb
>>
>>130920880
Ya, it's all hard, man. That's the point. If it was easy, music wouldn't be so special. Keep at it
>>
>>130922639
There's fart sounds in there I swear to god
>>
>>130920651
Once you realize that songs are made up of loops of various lengths with fills u will get it. Hint: the longer the loop takes to reset the slower your song will sound. So if you want a long melody you should layer a smaller loop under it to maintain speed.
>>
>>130924439
Thanks for the tips man. I keep accidentally pressing V for some time now and the volume thing appears but I don't really know what to do with it. I usually just monitor the volume meter on the tracks themselves and avoid them hitting the yellow.

On the master meter on the bottom left I learned to add a compressor as a limiter so it my records no longer clip as before. But the volume meter always slam the yellow bar (but doesnt go past 0) Is there a number I should aim for like -6 or -12 so things dont go out of control even without compression?

For EQ I usually just cut the 250 and 500 as it sounds bassy enough on my not studio monitors, but then listening to the mdr750 its so tinny and DI sounding it's quite annoying.

Asked around here before and ezdrummer and superior drummer seems to be the ones recommended for retards like me. Sorry for the stupid questions I'm just a neanderthal guitarist who only got into recording for almost a year now since I had my Quad Cortex.
>>
>>130924960
I will give u some quick tips:
Try making your guitars mono and panning them after the mono effect . This will teach you about stereo field easily.

Don't worry about meters too much in digital recording just worry about the sound itself and the luft readout. Get a meter that tracks lufts. This is percieved loudness and will be the most accurate for most applications.

The easiest and best way to use reverb to understand it is to send the reverb to another bus and keep the original sound dry. This will instantly give you the standard reverb effect most people look for. You can also process that reverb individually at that point.

Ez drummer is not for retards, the best of the best use it.
