>>130911128i said this before in the metal megathread, but from my unbiased experience listening to Japanese metal, it is either relatively overhyped (not necessarily terrible, just unremarkable despite their popularity), or legit some of the most damn impressive stuff I've ever heardsome overhyped bands:>x japan: their early speed metal era is inferior to that to the german scene, and they become even more lame when they only release sappy power ballads. art of war is good though, and i also like their live performance of "x">lovebites: god i hate asami's voice>aldious and practically many other all-female metal bands: i like their feminine aesthetics, but musically they don't do much for me; the concept of japanese girl bands are overrated imo; i prefer western women sexy beauties>galneryus: just not a fan>dir en grey, maximum the hormone: i'll pass on any metalcore/alt metal that isn't killswitch; will also pass on all those kawaii gimmicks like babymetalnow some actual amazing shit japan produced:>intestine baalism: melodeath that's actually melodic death metal and not just some groovy power metal with some blast beats and growls>sabbat: legit some of the best extreme metal i've heard aside from possessed (before jeff liked teen girls); it's like venom but better>versailles: perhaps the only vkei band i like, some legit romantic power metal, whereas many western bands these days are too gimmicky and much like abba dance pop (will always love blind guardian and roy khan kamelot though)>gism: i think it's a bit of a stretch to say they were the "first" extreme metal band, but they were damn extreme for their time

>>130911145To be fair the "overhyped" Japanese metal bands you posted are pop metal bands, rather than metal bands worshiped in deeper metal circles.The main audience for X Japan in Japan are the equivalent of the main audience for bands like Kiss in America. That isn't to say X Japan's bad (their live stuff in the 90s is some of the best live power metal ever).Disliking Galneryus is just your personal preference man, they're a straight-up great power metal band and one of the best in the neo-classical power metal subgenre.As for Dir En Grey, of course they're never going to actually hold up to real death or black or thrash metal bands but as far as nu-metal, alt-metal and butt-metal goes they're one of the best in the world.
