Depends if you're talking about digital or analog. A lot of modern analog synths sound good but maybe don't use the exact same filters or voice chips or whatever. Old digital synths sound good because of crunchy DACs and aliasing.

Actually I think the best synths these days are the digital emulations of "vintage gear." I think the vast majority of people cannot tell the difference between actual vintage equipment anyway, and if you can you're a NERD. You really can't beat the combination of all the benefits of digital synths combined with the sound of analog circuit emulation/modeling.

That said, pretty much all synths sound like shit if you don't know what you're doing, and they pretty much all make cheesy bullshit sounds if you don't know anything about how to process the signal afterward. You can get great synth sounds out of even the most basic synth circuitry if you know what you're doing with the output. And you can make almost anything sound like almost anything else if you want to waste the time on it.

I've used them in big studios. They sound great in the studio especially. In person they're amazing. Once you get it all recorded it basically isn't much different. If you are ignorant of the state of the art of sound modeling, then maybe you think there is an actual difference, but really honestly you CAN make anything sound like almost anything else with the right modeling and processing. Vintage gear is cool and I like to nerd out over it but like I said, really the best stuff today is digital, not because it's better than vintage analog stuff in terms of sound, but because of how easy it is to process the signal and do anything you want with it.

But yeah I mean you can go drop a few hundred grand on a great array of analog synths fed into a truly great recording rack and it'll sound amazing. But if you're a true synth nerd you can pretty much do all the signal transformations in that chain through digital modeling. Collecting vintage gear is more of a hobbyist thing than anything. The producers I know that are actually successful and regularly releasing music don't really spend much time fiddling with gear, they just use what is around, and have learned how to make it sound like what they want regardless.

You have to realize though that when you truly start sinking that kind of studio money into a setup, it really only sounds "that good" in that particular room. By the time someone is listening to it in their car or on their phone it makes almost no difference that you recorded a Jupiter-8 with an EMT140 plate reverb into a Neve 1073 and Fairchild 670 or whatever. If you emulated all of that shit, 99% of people could not tell the difference without a proper audiophile listening setup.

Oh, yeah, I definitely agree that analog stuff, especially vintage stuff, is TONS of fun! It's a great hobby, and there's nothing wrong with that. Some people collect guitars, or cars, or pokemon cards. If you want to have a cool synth setup in your room or home studio space that is definitely much cooler than having a big VST library. They are way more fun to fuck around with, for sure. And yeah if you have a nice audio setup in your space they sound fucking amazing.

Nah, you can get guitars with MIDI pickups and if there was a perfect guitar VST (I have never found one, though) you could just play guitar. Just the same, a good USB synth keyboard can pretty much map everything you would do on an analog synth. There are always nuances, instruments are beautiful, wonderful things and they're all unique, but also most things are a lot more about the player/producer than the instrument, and like I said you can pretty much make anything sound like anything if you want to spend enough time on it. A USB synth keyboard and a digital VST is never going to match the FUN or the FEEL of a vintage analog instrument, but it can pretty much sound the same.

And I don't know, man, I have known people who have written entire orchestral scores used in movies with digital instruments just using the mouse and spending many many painstaking hours composing for each instrument. You can make amazing stuff with a piano roll. If you're willing to spend the time on it and you have the ear for it, you can imitate the playing characteristics of anything, really.
