kind of true. When I started playing guitar all I wanted to do was shred and play fast. Then I achieved that after the first five or so years, and realized basically a monkey could be trained to do it. Most shred guitar I thought was so badass turns out to be actually painfully boring musically. Practically just a scale and arpeggio exercises. So I spent the next 15 years learning about taste and timing instead.

But yeah a good vocalist is almost always going to mog a good guitarist in terms of attention, and a good guitarist is almost always going to get more attention than a good bassist or drummer, and so on, even though a good drum+bass combo that grooves together actually musically mogs the rest of it. It's not fair but the world isn't fair. It doesn't really matter, though. Real ones just care about the music and making the best music possible together.

Ultimately, listening to some chud wank some meedley-meedley skreedley-skreedley solos for five minutes is never going to be very desirable to most audiences. People tune that shit out after like 30 seconds max. Vocals are really what hooks most people and keeps their attention.

Yeah, the truth is that the world is full of great musicians. That in itself won't get you anywhere in music. You have to also work well with other people, have strong work ethic, cultivate your creative ideas, and so on. And even then, that'll just make you a studio musician, unless you have strong stage presence, natural charisma, a captivating look, the ability/stamina to perform on stage five or six nights a week while traveling for months on end without going insane or partying too hard and being unable to perform (or dying).

It's a rough field. I'm 36 now and considered one of the top guitar players in my niche genre, and I'm still a nobody, I never got rich or famous (though I didn't particularly want to), I play four nights a week and teach lessons and do studio recording sessions, and I can pay all my bills with music. And for most of us, that's really the best we can hope to do in the music industry.

I've met a lot of big name people and honestly I don't envy them. The deal with the devil is not to be trifled with. There's a ceiling to how high you can go unless you basically sign your life away. The people who do best at that are the people who don't want to/can't do anything for themselves anyway. They are run by handlers 24/7. It's honestly kind of sad/embarrassing, and I could never give up my freedom like that.
So I'm content to be a nobody.
But hey all you kids out there, the only important thing in music is that you have fun making music. Go have fun with your friends and make good sounds together.

That's not really a thing anymore, the only musicians that are pressured to tour at all already have mainstream success (as in the tippy top 0.01% like Drake and Sabrina Carpenter). Plenty of teenagers who make music on their laptops and have zero experience with crowds beyond their kindergarten talent show have gotten massive on TikTok/Instagram

I was moreso thinking of artists who grew up without a local scene at all. Even if there was one, if you were playing music your best bet was to withstand having rocks and glass bottles thrown at you and pray that 1% of the audience would enjoy it and come to your next show, and if you accumulated a large enough audience via fishing for that 1% at every show almost every day for anywhere between 3 and 10 years, it might finally be worth it to invest in recording an album to attain wider recognition. Zoomers have no idea how lucky they are.
