To achieve that over-exposed/contrasty/saturated effect, I would fire up photoshop and clone the main layer and apply the "overlay" blend mode, then adjust the levels of the main layer to taste. You will also notice that there's a thin ripped paper border around the cover art for Michelle's "Spirit Room", which was a staple of grunge aesthetics.
