Is there any Indian music worth listening to?
>>
>>130986302
You posted it
>>
these are the only 2 big western pop/rock hits i can think of:

this was made by an indian or bangladesh guy
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lVL-zZnD3VU

this was another sorta hit late 90s from an indian band

i've always wondered why indian music seems to come in the form of movie soundtracks
do they not just make albums on their own?
>>
>>130986397
these were indian immigrants to the uk, so the style is just the 90s uk trends (britpop, trip hop). pretty good songs though

Yeah, that guy. He was awesome. That Balle Balle song is just as sick of a dance tune as anything that was put under Kylie Minogue or Madonna's name.
Their film soundtracks are awesome too. I got the ost for Shalimar and Sholay. Tight stuff.
And I don't know if he's indian or pakistani but there was this nusrat ali fateh guy who made sufi meditation music based on polyphony and sick ass vocals. He's great. Even Jeff Buckley had a go at covering one of his songs.

I like the sounds of "Indian classical" whenever I hear it but know absolutely nothing about the genre. Ditto with Arab and Chinese for that matter
>>
>>130986619
"world music" is pretty hard to learn about because there isn't a huge western interest in them. sites like rym don't care unless it's some numero group shit. i usually search for old releases on discogs and try stuff out.

Shakti (with John McLaughlin)

1) only listen to the stuff from the 70s. The modern stuff is very different
2) yes, there's an english guitarist. but there are 3 or 4 indian guys on each album. and nobody hears the music and thinks anything other than "indian music."

there was a cool shoegaze/dreampop indian band my ex showed me but I cant recall the album. Elephant on the cover

Peter Cat Recording Co. has very good stuff, although they're not consistent. Best Indian artist I've heard.
