/mu/ put me on to this album way back in the day, i think it used to be #1 on the all time RYM chart, and at first i didn't like it, i didn't get it. it sounded crappy, all fuzzy and blown out, and the singer has this harsh yowling voice and he can barely hit his notes sometimes. i resolved to listen to it until i understood why people loved it, so i downloaded it and put it on my ipod touch and tried listening to it several times, but i could never make it through. one summer evening, while my parents were driving me home from a county fair, i put the album on but fell asleep in the back seat, and was woken up by the final moments of the last track on the album: "when we break, we'll wait for a miracle, god is a place where some holy spectacle lies..." etc. i had an epiphany then. these few bars were the single greatest piece of music i had ever heard in my life. i loved every second of the album ever since and 15-odd years later i love it still

This album out of everything stuck the most with the average person. It's some solid indie/folky rock shit but it's super easy to grasp and take in for everybody, i.e. it's accessible.I'm not hating, I still like a few tracks from it, but it just seemed like everybody who wanted to expand their music taste a bit tried this album and liked it, no matter which direction they ended up going.Nowadays, the musical landscape is just so different that this album is a bit more detached from what a 20 year old would likely be listening to before it. If you were 20 in 2005 you likely already had taste for some kind of rock or alternative radio rock, aeroplane wasn't too far fetched to appreciate. Most 20 year olds now might not have ever had a rock or folk song in their life that meant anything to them
