Discovery [Virgin, 2001]
>These guys are so French I want to force-feed them and cut out their livers. Young moderns who've made the Detroit-Berlin adjustment may find their squelchy synth sounds humanistic; young moderns whose asses sport parallel ports may dance till they crash. But Yank fun is much less spirituel, so that God bless America, "One More Time" is merely an annoying novelty stateside. The way our butts plug in, there are better beats on the damn Jadakiss CD. C+
>>
>>131037998
I love how Discovery filtered all the absolute fucking pseuds like this complete faggot that deserves turbo AIDS

almost all critics shit on Discovery
if you were there when it came out it was instantaneous to anyone with the smallest modicum of taste how awesome it was
I didn't even listen to that shit
i had a roommate that was a chad who was into anime and raves and shit before it was 'cool' and he always had the hottest girlfriends you could possibly imagine and he got that and had me listen to it and i was a metal head but even I could tell it was a perfect landmark
>>
>>131037998
Why did he hate them so much
>>
>>131038070
Because he's a soulless ghoul who can only hide behind flashing his flailing intellect and is so insecure about his actual roots and his natural predilections that he's gotta put on this big act about holding the truth to what ''real music'' is and being a friend of the ghetto and the downtrodden (because he believes in the meme of only poor people can make soulful music) in order to feel like he's got something real to say about the world.

>he's gotta put on this big act about holding the truth to what ''real music'' is and being a friend of the ghetto and the downtrodden (because he believes in the meme of only poor people can make soulful music)
He likes plenty of mainstream pop music though
>>
>>131038130
That's how you keep your job. You shit on ABBA because they're the evil nordic plain pop act that took over your precious radio but you fawn all over Madonna because she's got her style from the down and dirty streets of new yawk. ''Muh edge''. Fuck off.

I had the same experience as a kid hearing Discovery for the first time. I was a preteen and an older kid somehow had Discovery on CD and gatekept the fuck out of it, wouldn't let me listen.. I had to hear it. Once I did I immediately was like hoooooly fuck. That was around 2002 or 2003.

Later on, there really weren't any kids in my high school who would give something like Daft Punk a shot. Meanwhile they would dance to Soldja Boy or Ying Yang Twins, but somehow Daft Punk was too close to being for the gay club or the Euro dance club.

If there was one thing that filtered normies right out the gate when listening to Discovery, it was the 'skipping' effect on One More Time.

it was the most NPC cattle music ever made starting with "around the world".
probably even more popular in the US than in Europe, on top of that. France immediately viewed it as a "french product export" cash cow.

listening to those between 1995 and 2002 is normal. later than that it's cringe.
daft punk has always been gay, though highly influential and making disco "cool" again, i have no problem admitting that.

Yes it was, it was most the populations introduction to anything electronic and it was huge and mainstream and on MTV constantly. Discovery was the definition of palatable to the masses.

Not a single album mentioned here invented a genre except MAYBE loveless, unless you're getting into made-up micro-genre wankery.

don't sound so triggered. Daft Punk were not mainstream in America in even the mid 2000s. when i'm talking about it not being mainstream back in 2003 to a white kid in a rural area with a 56k modem, i mean cross-generationally, cross population, following mainstream culture, radio play, all of it. in America Daft Punk did not register in the mainstream.

But when RAM came out, I cringed so hard. I hated Get Lucky and avoided anything to do with Daft Punk. But looking back, especially coming back to Discovery recently for the nostalgia factor, Daft Punk are more of a funk band than guys making electronic dance music. I can see why that would piss off fans of avant button smashers and MIDI note holders because Daft Punk sound like musicians on Discovery. sorry if you held onto some outsider status a little too hard from 2002 and think Discovery was some mainstream blockbuster.
>>
>>131048366
Fuuuck I wish someone else would at least try to match this.
>>
>>131053861
It was on TV everywhere in France, and normgroids started talking about them like they just invented electronic music, it was really unbearable. Then a bit later were are told that Mr Oizo with his retarded 2 fart sounds in a loop and stuffy toy is the next groundbreaking genius thing. I genuinely didn't understand what was happening with all this.

this
many other electronic acts, including old school acts, released better albums in 2013
>Daft Punk are more of a funk band than guys making electronic dance music
that too shows why i cannot take them seriously. if we were serious about listening to synth funk, we would ditch daft punk and listen to Prince
>>

that's also what the producers of "Drive" said about Kavinsky (RIP) but Refn insisted to include it

The soundtrack to the lost city of the monkey god by the sorcerers. It's in that genre of music I call "music the devil's band plays as a warm up"
