Spotify advertises itself as doing that when in reality it just takes your playlists, picks like 4 or 5 bands out of it, and just plays a the same selection of songs from their discography to you over and over again. Listen to more artists and it should sort itself out? It does have its quirks though, if you expect it to do all the work for you.It recommends at least one new album to me (almost) everyday in the "Recommended for Today" list. Some do repeat. For example, it recommend George Shaw's Encounters every Tuesday morning. It's a great album, so I play it, and now it's like "oh you like it this morning so you want to hear this every Tuesday morning!" It's weird but it's not too bad, imo.

I don't use spotify to "discover" new music. That's fucking retarded. I use it to listen to the music I want to hear. I don't even save shit to a library or make playlists. I just search for the album I want to listen to and play it.

The best thing about it is scrolling through playlists artists post, half of them dump all of their liked songs and you find some good stuff every once in a while. Most of it's just algorithm slop tho. Everyone's fed the same shit.

Similarly, if you find a playlist you love, it's always a good bet to check the rest of that users playlists. Younger me would've scoffed at this behavior, but these days I like to throw on a long ass playlist based on whatever niche sound I'm looking for atm, then 'like' the songs I'm really feeling to check out the album in full later. The algorithm, besides front page recommendations, doesnt affect my listening process, and I bet it doesn't for most people on mu. That's only relevant if you throw on a song and expect it to play what are basically radio hits. Which obviously works for some, but not for people here. Playlists are basically modern sharethreads, because mu is useless for that now.
