It was "funny" for facebook hipsters to dislike the guys. I liked Nickelback, had the album in OP. Past that album they kinda went to shit, tho, but so do several other rock bands. Nickelback just so happened to be the running joke that has been told ad nauseam at the time, so much that it started to reverse the trend, and people started liking or at least exploring Nickelback's work, be it out of spite, contrarianism, or genuine interest.
They are bad. They are safe music for people who don't really like rock or any alternative music. At the height of their popularity they were babby's first 'guitar music' for people who would unironically use that phrase to describe any kind of rock music. The only people I knew who genuinely listened to Nickleback were people who had an extremely limited musical palette (like growing up listening solely to the handful of 60s/70s/80s artists their parents put on all the time), or complete normalfags that never thought about music beyond liking whatever was charting at the time. The hate was exacerbated at the height of their fame because they had constant radio play and showed up in film soundtracks as well, so it felt like you couldn't get away from them, which will always piss off people eventually. They do have some well written songs and their production is obviously on point cause they have the money for it, but generally, this band is lame. The lyrics are lame, the vocals are lame, the riffs are lame. Just an uncool band.

They were sincerely dreadful. As much as a product of corporate design as any WPOP star we complain about shitting up the board.It's even worse than that though because they were chasing the post-Nirvana sound, so it's like if Sony Records started doing a safe, toothless SOPHIE rip off today

Ironically, zoomers can only talk themselves into revisionist nonsense like this because bands like Nickelback drove so many people away from radio and into alternative distribution platforms like filesharing, iTunes, and now streaming where the relentless overplaying of horrible artists and bands is no longer a problem.

These fuckers were forced into every station format that their record label could possibly get away with. There was no escape from them in the 2000s unless you either stuck to the hip-hop/R&B stations or stopped listening to radio altogether, and a critical mass of people did the latter. And if it wasn't Nickelback, it was one of the parade of bands who sounded exactly like them.

They're very normcore, formulaic, commercial and overproduced, plus pandering to people after 9/11 and all that. It's just not cool for hipsters and a lot of critics are hipsters. I'm not a fan but I think the production values are high. I can see people who are musicians and studio engineers who might not be fans but be like "well you gotta hand it to them" at that technical / production level or even "business" level. But the uncs talking about them being overplayed are not exaggerating. It was relentless. It was some corporate conspiracy to pay radio stations to play it constantly.
Also on this musician side of it, a funny thing is that Devin Townsend has spoken very highly of Kroeger, his fellow Canadian. He's like, he's brillant, a real rock star! Townsend has also pandered to his audience pretty heavily but I think with these musicians it's like, well this guy knows ball. Like it's just showbiz for them at some level.
