HOLY FUCKING SHIT BROS
METAL CAN BE GOOD?
>>

There was already a thread about this album

>>131212300
Dark Tranquility were always better
>>
>>131212300
mumble rap for mexican nerds
>>
>>131212300
Not for long, they sold out
>>
>>131212300
Whoracle is better.
>>131212602
>sold out
2010 called, they want their retarded non-criticism back.
It's always hilarious seeing people talk about metal bands "selling out" when the vast majority of metal is popular music, i.e. recorded and mass-distributed music produced within a commercial music industry. It's especially funny seeing it thrown at melodic death/black metal bands, a genre that was catchy and dumbed down from more extreme forms of metal from the get-go.
>>
>>131212602
Anon nigga shut up, mexican op's picrel exists still, and is enjoyed to this day by many dbz shirt wearing burrito wielding otakus.
It exist? Good. It riff? Bueno.
Simple as
>>
>>131212645
Nu metal generally sucks, and they genre-hopped on it to keep their popularity somehow. And they aren't even good in the new genre 1-2 8/10 songs per album max

There's clearly a difference in sound between this

Cool. None of that has anything to do with what I said.

You replied some barely related bullshit, I am not even sure did you hear about in flames before

in flames did sell out, but it makes perfect sense why they did given what was going on with the band at the time. and at least they successfully sold out and built a new audience and maintained relevance, unlike many bands which just sold out and never found a new audience, or just kept making increasingly worse versions of the album(s) they got popular for.
just think about what was taking place when in flames sold out.. you have a band with a legendary guitarist who pioneered the genre of music who's super catchy riffs and solos the main draw and appeal to your band. he becomes an alcoholic and spirals out and quits. they made the most of what they had. nu metal which was more vocal centric, solo-less and didn't require having a virtuoso guitarist in your band was becoming popular at this time. anders and the band name were the main appeal and draw at this point with jesper gone. i don't like it, but it was the correct move.
what a lot of metalheads don't get is that their new audience is way bigger than their death metal purist fanbase ever was. what a lot of people don't realize about their sell-out era is it served as a gateway drug to metal for a whole generation of young millenials and zillenials, and it was a lot of americans' first introduction to european metal. there's more people out there with fond memories and nostalgia for reroute to remain than lunar strain and jester race.

Sometimes I think I have the soul of the jester

Dark Tranquillity managed to update their sound while still keeping some artistic integrity
The band was more stable than In Flames until 2016 though

Going full goth metal was probably a risky move at the time but it paid off
>>
in flames are so boring but thats the same as any other gothenburg band
>>
>>131214606
What do you think is some fun metal?
>>
>>131212300
you should try dan swano's stuff (edge of sanity) op
>>
>>131214606
i think with in flames they are the same as metallica for me in a way,
when you are first exposed to them they're insane and groundbreaking but as you hear more stuff
that came from theirs and the surrounding scene's influence it becomes a lot less interesting.

it's the only thing that's good in the past century, but you're not ready for this conversation
>>
melodeath killed metal
>>
>>131214841
Wrong nu-metal did
>>
>>131214754
>that came from theirs
like who? there were only 1 or 2 albums that you could arguably call melodic death metal which existed when jesper was writing the same sort of riffs on the book of truth with ceremonial oath.

>surrounding scene's influence
yeah i mean, its heavier maiden/running wild. take it or leave it.
>>
>>131214614
metal that I would specifically call "fun" might be ghoul or municipal waste, maybe impaled
>>
>>131214754
excretion, edge of sanity and at the gates were the only bands with a release that you could arguably call melodic death metal out at the time when jesper started coming up with the in flames sound. some other early and proto melodic death metal albums like the karelian isthmus and parade into centuries released before the book of truth but the book of truth was recorded before they were.

What about Heartwork?
>>
>>131214962
>>131214879
i think you anons are misinterpreting what i'm saying.
i'm talking about bands in the future that took inspiration from in flames and gothenburg in general. i think that as people kept innovating on the melodeath sound, the
predecessor (in flames in this case) became less interesting due to how much of their dna is present in melodeath bands that came out after them, making them sound cliche in a way.
in flames' old stuff still has the novelty of being classic. for their time, they definitely aren't unoriginal or anything of that nature, they're just one of those bands that become less interesting as you delve deeper into the genre,
which is fine. i still enjoy their stuff from time to time and i think they did a lot for melodeath, they're just not as interesting to me anymore, especially in comparison to when i first heard them.
>>
>>131213491
How is it barely related? Criticizing metal bands for "selling out" is hilariously retarded and I just called it out. It's not that deep. Unless your reading comprehension is that shit?
>>
Bullet Ride is one of my favorite songs ever.
>>
>>131215020
For me it's Pinball Map
>>
>>131215020
this was my first melodeath song ever i think. a friend showed clayman to me and i was hooked on melodeath for about a year straight after
>>
>>131214978
came out after the book of truth was recorded. book of truth was recorded in 1992 even though it released in 1993.

>>131214993
>i think you anons are misinterpreting what i'm saying.
>i'm talking about bands in the future that took inspiration from in flames
yeah i thought you were saying the exact opposite. communication breakdown. absolutely do agree with your take when it comes to jester race and post-jester race material. lunar strain still sounds unique and not cliche to me.

>>131215020
for me its zombie inc
>>
i still don't know why normies find this style of watered down death metal with iron maiden leads to be so compelling
>>
>>131215225
are you white?
>>
>>131215200
>lunar strain
i have a bootleg lunar strain shirt lying around somewhere and it's still one of my favorite items i have.
i think what makes lunar strain so special is the production, i think that in flames got good production wise very quickly after lunar strain, and that period of in flames spread around through the melodeath scene like crazy as a result. lunar strain is more primitive production-wise, so its sound never really caught on.
though i think subterranean also deserves a mention. stand ablaze is one of my favorite in flames songs.
>>
>>131215225
this is probably bait, but accessibility would be the primary reason. dissonance is harder to appreciate musically, so melodeath offers a more melodically accessible alternative to death metal. also because iron maiden leads are good.
>>
>>131215225
>>131215273
i don't understand how people can listen to dissonant, dark music 24/7 every single day of their lives. i listen to that stuff too, i've been into black metal for 30 years. don't you get a little bored of it after a while?
>>
>>131215296
not bored necessarily, more like physically exhausted. for example, if you listen to nothing but yngwie malmsteen for a week straight, it eventually becomes a soup of fast distorted guitar in your head that produces nothing in you but a migraine. the same thing would happen with death metal, probably even faster.
melodeath allows me to listen to dm without the same mental strain if i am exhausted already. i'd imagine people who listen to dm do this in a smaller level, where they just pick a slightly less harsh band to listen to after some time.
but eventually even that becomes exhausting also.
personally, i had to take a step back from metal as a whole for about a year or two before returning to it earlier this year.
>>
>>131215225
i know maiden's a much more recognizable band but most of the stereotypical gothenburg and metalcore riffs actually originate with running wild not maiden btw.

>>131215343
i came off a ~5 year break from metal a year ago. i don't understand the people who are like "i need every album to be the rawest true kvlt dark dissonant shit ever" like just listen to noise music like nurse with wound or something at that point. i just assume the people who try to flex their metal cred are tourists who don't listen to metal often enough to get the fatigue you describe. ive always seen it as a performative/poser attitude.
>>
>>131215225
Because it's fun and catchy
>>
>>131215366
Yeah I got bored of most bands after a while but still listen to them sometimes out of nostalgia
>>
>>131215296
there is a huge muddle ground between dissonant death metal and melodic death metal
>>
>>131215564
Yes there's also brutal and slam
>>
>>131216396
or just regular death metal
>>
>>131215225
theres multiple distinct eras of melodic death metal, proto-melodic death metal -> melodic death metal -> gothenburg -> melodeath. you're thinking of the gothenburg era and modern stuff.
hypocrisy, vehemence, sentenced are some good examples that don't really sound anything like what you described, and don't rely on your stereotypical melodic death metal riffs and tropes. pre 1995 melodic death metal and non-swedish stuff, especially greek shit is a lot more out there and less stereotypical. the early melodic death scene was probably the most creative out there and experimental death metal's ever been in its entire history tbqh.
>>
>>131217458
Even modern melodeath has lot of variety from alt sounding stuff like In Flames and Soilwork to power metal fusion like CoB and Kalmah or more prog sounding bands such as Belakor and in Mourning or more atmospheric melancholic bands like Insomnium and Swallow the Sun or more prog/folk stuff like Amorphis
>>
>>131217579
kek yeah i shouldn't have talked like i have any idea what melodeath sounds like after the mid 2000's. not trying to be a snob/hipster/contrarian but i just don't listen to a whole lot of modern death metal in general bc modern production just doesn't hit the same for me.
>>
(i hope this trend i've seen of people complaining about snap to grid and overuse of sampling continues and we get some kind of golden era where we get all the good parts of post-numetal era production but you can actually hear the drummer on the record... i swear i'm not a true kvlt snob fag...)
>>
>>131217686
New Immolation album from this year was pretty good
>>
>>131217733
shit ill give that a listen tonight
