It's not as "woke" in that American/British style of way that also comes across as kind of "evangelical." The French don't really like that stuff. They have more of a romantic and universal human rights thing going on with their left. "Liberty, equality, fraternity" and all that. Also there's the ecological stuff (which affects everyone). Or the "universal citizen." You have to read about the French Revolution. Anglo-American "progressivism" tends to be highly situated. Like this is my identity or whatever. It sort of does make sense within the context of American secularism/pluralism. But there's a lot of "marginalized groups / communities" in that style of language. But the French are like "humanity." Obviously the French Revolution had a lot of impact but it gets carried through today with Gojira dedicating songs to Iranian protesters (against clerical rule!) and Free Tibet and so forth as part of that universal thing. But the idea of dividing people up into a bunch of communities is not really their style.At any rate, this might not make them appear as left-wing as they are if you (like me) have grown up in the U.S. where people are saying you should feel bad for being white or whatever.

Looking at Gojira fans. Reddit (I know...) but sums it up. One of the more widey read French leftist newspapers (which still has links to the Communist Party) is called L'Humanite. An interesting thing about Gojira is that it didn't start out a political band really but they doubled down over time."The Internationale" also started out as a French song. I'm sort of just rolling with this theory but the texture of it all is very French.
