Why the FUCK have new CDs started to come in these paper cases?
I hate them so much. They look bad on the shelf with the rest of your collection. It seems like every time I have to take a CD out of it's paper case its getting destroyed.

Felt the same way when they got rid of long boxes
>>

Because they cost a little less than jewel cases. While the genuine answer is simply cost-cutting, when digipaks debuted they were pitched as environmentally friendly for using less plastic

They started doing this in the 2000s. Used to be just indie granola eater CDs though but now it's all of them.

Cds are a meme

whatever is left of the major labels in the US have been trying to kill off cds for years. they try to make them as shitty as possible in hopes people just give up on the medium. like you say even though you buy these new the discs are already usually scratched because of the tight packaging. i just got the new new order 2 cd sets and all the discs were in the packaging so tightly to avoid scratching i took scissors and cut straight across. i put all the discs in either slim line cases or an actual jewel case with proper older artwork. if you even get a booklet in these things now, they are not even fitting in the jewel cases because they are even shrinking the size of them

I wonder why they haven't instead tried to jew it up like the koreans do with the kpop albums, which have pretty elaborate packaging and are essentially part-cd part-collector's item, so they still have a fairly robust market for cd sales.

because americans are a market that just doesn't care
>>
>>131221364
i would think there's a market out there among the manchild demographic that would collect the heckin' heckerino out of some fancy ass reissues of 'classic' albums or current popular thing, but maybe i overestimate the size of that demo idk.

So is vinyl. Take your format warring elsewhere, dipshit

there is but this thread is about regular cd packaging being absolute garbage
>>
>>131221001
good one, gramps. you aight.
>>
>>131220989
Just for the record, OP, that Liturgy album you bought was ruined during the recording process, not during the packaging process.
>>
>>131221468
you cut off the part where i say 'or current popular thing' which would imply giving regular new releases the same treatment. anyway i don't think it's a practical idea for a market this big and diverse but it's interesting to see how it does still thrive in other places.
>>
>>131221489
Yep
>>
>>131220989
Why the fuck are you buying tranny music?
>>
>>131221288
The least they could do is put the disc in its own paper sleeve inside the cardboard one so it's not rubbing right against the cardboard as you're pulling it out. But even that's too much to ask

Same trend as everything else. Pick up an 80s/90s/later jewel case and feel how much flimsier it gets with the decades.
