I grew up with cassettes and am nostalgic for them, at least the aesthetic of the packaging when seeing these pictures. But they suck. In almost every single aspect, they're the worst (mass-produced) way to listen to music, and it's not even debatable. Oh, they LOOKED great, way better displayed on your shelf than CD cases or even vinyl sleeves, but that's all they've got going for them. And in the end, the music quality is all that really matters.

I mostly collect them because they're the most readily available way to listen to original analog mixes of albums that also gives you ease of storage and reasonable prices. I've yet to find a tape going for over 30 bucks while this is the average price of a vinyl album. Oddly enough, my late 70s Dark Side of the Moon tape sounds way better than the early 90s one I have...The only precaution I've been taking is avoiding tapes that go beyond the hour mark. You do get some issues with them due to how thin the tape is.

I've only ever come across maybe 5 disintegrated pads and I've owned hundreds and hundreds of tapes. 8 tracks are the format where you basically always have to change the pad, because it's plastic, but the pad on compact cassettes doesn't really fall apart

I'm surprised I don't see people talking about home recording on tape more around here. Good, used tape stock is basically free, and with a nice deck they sound excellent. I've got bins and bins of nice type IIs and type IVs with the paperwork and thrift stores usually only charge you a quarter for these. They're leagues above any modern tapes you can buy new, like the tapes the meme indie labels use for their releases
