in you are path
>>131227344I would but I can never find a half decent shelf to hold them in
>>131227344Tape decks require more maintenance then CD players or turntables.
>>131227344based, comfiest format>>131227446my walkman is kinda fucked and makes everything sound extra warm, boomy and bassy. I don't want to fix it, I wish I could hear everything through that tone
>>131227437Lots of people don't know that from having the tape pass over head in time builds up it's own magnetism and as part of the maintenance routing the heads must be de-magnetized.
ngl looking at these pics i can almost smell the inserts
>>131227344No thanks I'm not a faggot who collects plastic garbage.

> The battle damage to the cases because they were loved enough to be taken everywhere.Cars...hip pockets.
>>131227778Why would you copy CD to cassette.I copied many vinyl LP's to cassette....but NEVER a CD.
I grew up with cassettes and am nostalgic for them, at least the aesthetic of the packaging when seeing these pictures. But they suck. In almost every single aspect, they're the worst (mass-produced) way to listen to music, and it's not even debatable. Oh, they LOOKED great, way better displayed on your shelf than CD cases or even vinyl sleeves, but that's all they've got going for them. And in the end, the music quality is all that really matters.
>>131227898They were the best available format for portable music...UNTIL the advent of CD'sLike cassettes did to 8-Tracks.CD's made cassettes obsolete.
>>131227846I did this because it was a cheap way to make mixtapes. CD burners weren't as common, and blank CDs cost a pretty penny. So it was more economical to play a CD and record tracks to a cassette. >But vinyl sounds better than CDYes but many people had a dual CD/cassette player in the day, so it was much simpler than recording from vinyl. Also, it's a tape at the end of the day so it doesn't matter the source, it's still going to sound like shit.
>>131227344>15 year lifespan, shortened with each playNo thanks
>>131227953OK...that tracks.I never personally did that ...But I work in IT and had a burner very early after they became available, And cassette adapters were about the same cost as new release CD
>>131227846We bought albums in cds so a friend loaned you the album and you copied it(until a friend got a cd copier)Recording songs from the radio was fun
>>131227778They are genuinely the worst fucking format. Sounds like shit and the only thing they have going for them is their look
>>131227953My current tape deck is a dubbing deck
>>131227344>warn analog soundmeaningless audiophile nonsense
>>131227424props for the King Biscuit Flower Hour lol!
>>131228331I used to listen to that on the Radio. A good source for live concert footage.
>>131227778>only good in the old days for copying cds onto them>wasnt around before CDs>never made a mixed tapeold fag here. Not only could you copy songs off the radio on them but they were much better for car audio and companies started making powered amps to drive the speakers people were listening to their cassettes with.
>>131227984I have tapes from the 70's that still play just fine. I mostly collect them because they're the most readily available way to listen to original analog mixes of albums that also gives you ease of storage and reasonable prices. I've yet to find a tape going for over 30 bucks while this is the average price of a vinyl album. Oddly enough, my late 70s Dark Side of the Moon tape sounds way better than the early 90s one I have...The only precaution I've been taking is avoiding tapes that go beyond the hour mark. You do get some issues with them due to how thin the tape is.

>>131227344Tapetards, be they for cassettes or VHS, need to be gassed. There's a reason optical formats and files made them obsolete. They degrade more over time, you can't skip filler tracks immediately, they only sound good depending on the material they're produced on, and some tape versions of albums even have to fuck with the song sequence because of time restrictions. They suck and it's only literal wannabe hipster zoomers that fetishize them because muh retro svvlfvl aesthetic.Even vinyl has an advantage in that you get big ass cover art to go with the eventual degradation that format has.

>>131227344i usually only buy cassettes if it's a cassette only release, most of the tapes i do have are from mail order labels like Janushoved.
>>131229103Still inferior to track skipping on CDs that reads the track data on every CD ever made, tape tranny. Enjoy your AMS failing when it reads a tape that doesn't have long silent gaps and wears others down from the constant forwarding and skipping.
>>131227344>sound like shit>can't skip tracks>have to maintain the fuzzy pad thing>players break faster than cd or turntableI will buy one as a last resort or maybe some DIY merch table shit but CDs Vinyl and digital get way more play. I have a nice JVC deck and it does sound decent if the tape is perfect.
>>131228428>>wasnt around before CDsstarted in the 1960's believe it or not shortly before 8 tracks even
>>131229327>>>wasnt around before CDs were commonly used as media for music distribution

>>131227953>>131228052I'm wanting to try my hand at burning a tape of a modern band I like, any suggestions or pointers on what to use or watch out for? I like having the tape cause my truck still has it's original stereo with a tape deck and I like keeping an eye out at flea markets for old tapes to play in it. My pride and joy is a Linda Ronstadt that I had to cut open to resplice after I wore it out>>131228705“Whatever you now find weird, ugly, uncomfortable and nasty about a new medium will surely become its signature. CD distortion, the jitteriness of digital video, the crap sound of 8-bit - all of these will be cherished and emulated as soon as they can be avoided. It’s the sound of failure: so much modern art is the sound of things going out of control, of a medium pushing to its limits and breaking apart. The distorted guitar sound is the sound of something too loud for the medium supposed to carry it. The blues singer with the cracked voice is the sound of an emotional cry too powerful for the throat that releases it. The excitement of grainy film, of bleached-out black and white, is the excitement of witnessing events too momentous for the medium assigned to record them.”-Brian Eno>>131227595Nice Dusty Springfield
also anyone complaining about shit degrading or magnetizing or tape wearing out, none of this ever happened and i played my tapes until my stereo fucking bled. the only real danger was your tape getting eaten by the player which could mangle it beyond repair, or alternately you could claim you were making some musique concrete shit idk
>>131229315>can't skip tracks>have to maintain the fuzzy pad thingtapes are trash in every way. they are sllllooooooow. if you want to listen to a certain song then you have to play the guessing game with the FF button. no repeat either. and the fuzzy square sometimes falls off as the tape ages
>>131227344Cassette is only for stuff like noise music, dungeon synth, experimental tape music, found objects music and field recordings.
>>131229668DS AND black metal**
>>131227424ubiquitous commercial slop. who needs this shit when it's played literally everywhere and anywhere.
>>131229426Of course the tryhard hipster has to default to a quote that doesn't address the topic at hand and just speaks to vague tangential nonsense instead of posting an actual counterargument. Tapes died for a reason. Unless it's something that's never been released on any other medium, it's inferior and just a novelty format in the present.
>>131229315>>have to maintain the fuzzy pad thingThis really isn't even true. I've only ever come across maybe 5 disintegrated pads and I've owned hundreds and hundreds of tapes. 8 tracks are the format where you basically always have to change the pad, because it's plastic, but the pad on compact cassettes doesn't really fall apart
>>131229426Find a type II tape at your local thrift store and use that to record on instead of taping over a prerecorded type I
I'm surprised I don't see people talking about home recording on tape more around here. Good, used tape stock is basically free, and with a nice deck they sound excellent. I've got bins and bins of nice type IIs and type IVs with the paperwork and thrift stores usually only charge you a quarter for these. They're leagues above any modern tapes you can buy new, like the tapes the meme indie labels use for their releases
