say something nice about postrock
>>
>>131241235
idk what that is
>>
>>131241235
Swans mog
GYBE a shit
>>
It's a pretty good genre overall even though the most popular albums are just cinematicslop that overuses crescendos and saccharine violins and is about as deep as Hans Zimmer
>>
>>131241235
its what i think of when i hear the word "genre".
>>
>>131241237
Post-rock is a Rock genre with roots in, but soon rapidly distinct from, the European and U.S. Alternative Rock and Indie Rock scenes. The two key unifying musical elements among these bands are using instrumentation and riffs as facilitators for timbre, texture, and atmosphere, as well as embracing various styles and genres while distancing themselves from traditional rock structures. Despite multiple variants of the genre since its beginnings, these factors remain constant. Works are often instrumental and may also be lengthy in nature.

Something nice about post rock
>>
Godspeed gets old but they had their sound no doubt. Im more fond of post rock thats more like talk talk, or slint, swans even. More personality to it.

>>131241237
In the better days of /mu people like you would lurk longer until they learned more of the most famous acclaimed albums in the music world. To anyone who actually dives into music this is far from an obscure record and likely in the top 5 most notable post rock records.
>>
I've been relistening to my GYBE records lately after probably well over a decade of not listening. Very good, forgot how great ADBA is, especially Mladic which might be their best track.
Are the albums after Asunder any good? Never gave them a chance.
>>
>>131241235
early original post-rock >>> lame formulaic crescendocore
>>
Am I wrong for saying that an ambient "normal" boring scene suddenly explode when you root around a little with different drum patterns?
Ps. "Totorro" does that perfect
>>
>>131241235
Post some REAL post-rock bands
>Tortoise
>The For Carnation
>Hood
>Talk Talk
>O'rang
>Rachel's
>Polmo Polpo
>Movietone
>Crescent
>Yume Bitsu
>Loose Fur
>Pram
>later Sonic Youth
>A Minor Forest
>Labradford
>Windy & Carl
>Enablers
>late 90s Cheer-Accident
>Downy
>Long Fin Killie
>obviously Slint
It can be the greatest ''genre'' of music out there when it's not formulaic crescendocore and taking cues from all strands of music instead
>>
>>131241235
sleeping on the beach is actually pretty comfy as long as you do it in a "nice" neighborhood if you catch my drift
>>
>>131241237
My rule is if it came out on Kranky Records then it's post-rock
>>
>>131241502
great list. don't forget Moonshake and Main
>>
>>131241502
>>131241547
Cerberus Shoal - Homb is a great record too
>>
Dirty Three is another fantastic post-rock band. You don't see them talked about here too often. Love their first album in particular.
>>
>>131241242
they mog brutally in funds. all the members of godspeed put together probably don't even have a 100th of michael gira's net worth
>>
>>131241359
I like some songs in Laughing stock but overall I feel it lacks the distinct moodiness and minimalism that we associate with post-rock. This Heat matched that vibe better imo https://youtu.be/wtuo57K3ERQ?si=7d-ykJBqNuvlhfyr
>>
>>131241835
>we associate with post-rock
You mean (You) associate with post-rock
>>
>>131241301
I thought rock was invented to turn the 30-100 person orchestra into a small 3-5 man concise unit. Then Post-Rock was to orchestrate symphonic music with this condensed rock instrumentation?
>>
>>131241884
Not at all. That was never the intent of the genre itself so-to-speak, which really wasn't much of a genre as much as an organic evolution away from what was considered the standard rock music pop song format. What you're describing is what it later turned into after GYBE and Mogwai and Explosions in the Sky got massive. Many of the early post-rock acts took more cues from jazz and the burgeoning electronic music scene than anything else.
>>
>>131241797
Poorfag butthurt
>>
>>131241947
i'm describing crescendocore? that makes more sense with Slint
>>
>>131241502
Cmon now literally most of the bands anon posted here >>131241502 have those vibes. Not saying Talk talk didn't have an influence but it leans more towards soft ambient rock vibes
>>
>>131241983
meant for >>131241856
>>
>>131241962
Slint didn't give a single shit about classical music whatsoever, or even jazz. They were kids who really liked Neil Young and post-hardcore music like Squirrel Bait and Big Black and jammed for hours and hours until they created their own unique space in music. Them having a recorded cover of Cortez the Killer ties it all together. I guess you could liken their music to certain contemporaries like Bitch Magnet but I don't know if they took cues from them per se.
>>
>>131241983
anon why are you so focused on the term ''vibes''? it's not a good look. also i think you'd click more with how post rock came to be by listening to ''krautrock''. you'd be surprised at the similarities between early kraftwerk, neu!, cluster, harmonia, and what was later classified as post-rock
>>
>>131242030
because music is a series of vibrations that resonate, dissonate or resolve?
>>
>>131242030
Krautrock is a remote influence but it leans towards jam wank more so than minimalism and moodiness, not the same thing.
>>
>>131241983
TT was like the ultimate convergence of jazz, especially ECM style jazz like Eberhard Weber and shit like that, and rock and cutting edge recording techniques. Hence, post-rock. The transcendental religious bent to it takes further into stratospheric territory. I really can't fathom how somebody could criticize them for a ''lack of moodiness'' of all things.
If you want a more minimal take on that sound, then Mark Hollis' final solo album should have you covered.

It's nice you can make posts from rock rather than just wood or shitty plastic.
>>
>>131242063
is Faust jam wank? that's literally where This Heat got their schtick from. all the tape fuckery and dissonant tunings and creepazoid vocals.
>>
>>131242112
That's only the first album, second album is more of an actual rock album rather than kraut tape & synth wankery

what do u guys say is THE postrock album like post side of the rock kinda album?
>>
>>131242392
either hex or laughing stock
>>
>>131242096
I still hear this as complex soft music rather than post-rock. He likes moving here and there too much, it's not the same kind of droney dread unafraid to play one chord for 10 minutes, this particular track is also barely rock.
>>
Its the 2nd most high IQ music, just under classical. Huge variety in the genre. It's amazing, but a damn shame what's become of it these days.

>I thought rock was invented to turn the 30-100 person orchestra into a small 3-5 man concise unit
no, not the orchestra format but big band format.
countries during ww2 were butthurt that young people ignored propaganda and orchestra, rebelled by going to clubs to listen to jazz music so the USA championed rock to sterilize jazz/big band. it's not a surprise that rock n roll was developed right after ww2
rock n roll, just like jazz, was loved by non-anglos (see greasers) so the anglo sphere has to sterilize further. rock n roll was sterilized into rock.

ASMZ and half of Godspeed’s discography is really good. I like the minimalist plunks of China gate. Dirty three is really good
